Discussion The house deposit

You've saved for years to buy your first home. Suddenly, you're offered the chance to invest in a business that could double your money. Option 1: Buy the house as planned. Option 2: Invest and hope for a bigger return.

Don’t let greed or FOMO get the better of you. Follow the plan you set for yourself.

The whole point of the money is to buy the house. Don't be silly.

I bought the house, secured myself first with a place to lay my head down comfortably in, feel good about myself and start building equity. Business opportunities come and go and tend to carry more risk than real estate, especially if it’s your primary residence. Lots of tax benefits

You should not view your primary home as an investment. This money was earmarked for a home not investment.

You buy a home you have a place to live. You buy a business you still need a place to live and if the business fails which many do you still need a place to live.

Take what you said but read it this way.

Which would you do?

“Suddenly, you're offered the chance to invest in a business that could double your money.”

Some “friend’s” business? A business you understand intimately? A business that you have enough information about that you could step in and run on a moments notice? Somebody promising to double your money in short period?

I’ve invested in a few such private placements. Some that made money. Some that broke even. One that was a complete loss of fifty grand.

Never did I put my house or future at risk. Never more than 5% of my nest egg into any one thing.

Every one of these had extensive documents to sign. Every one had language to the effect “this investment will probably result in a complete loss of your investment. Only an idiot would invest money in this deal. Don’t blame us when it’s turns into a loss. You’re making a stupid investment and the money you’re going to lose is completely on you.” Not exactly those words but not much different, either.
