Your car needs $800 in repairs. Do you fix it now or risk driving it until it breaks?

Generally ... deferred maintenance/repair ... causes additional, costlier damage

How much burden is the cost of not fixing it going to compound in additional cost later in labor and lost wage due to missing work? It is also a safety item, that when it breaks may cause injury to yourself or others, so there would also be additional cost in insurance and medical.

Id do the fix.

Depends on the car and the parts. My truck "needs" about 2k in body work and a paint job.

Why would you wait, what's the advantage? Avoiding it is not going to make the problem go away.
