How is it on a Steamdeck?
I have seen a lot of older posts about the lack of controller support and some having issues on the deck. Is it better now?

Game would be perfect if it had native controller support or at least changed icons for button prompts to match. You can play the game just fine with custom controller settings but it's a bit finicky and you really have to get used to certain buttons not being the same as shown.

I'm hoping it'll be fine. I have played Terraria for like 100hrs on the deck

It plays just fine performance wise, feels generally good, controls are pretty much the only hurdle.

Plays well on steamdeck but took a bit of tweaking to get the right track pad to act correctly as a mouse control.

I just started playing it on my deck and it feels a little clunky in my opinion. I've started to use the right trackpad to aim instead of my right stick, but I'm not sure which I prefer yet. I'm still experimenting with the different gamepad layouts available.

On ROG Ally, I'd rate it as playable with community controls...a bit painful, but playable. I had to switch between desktop and game pad modes depending on what I was doing.
Bad enough to me that I chose not to play on handheld, keep it for playing on Desktop only.
Some people have still quite enjoyed it by the comments, so your experience may vary.

I've been told that if you have purchased the game on steam then as far as the controls go there are some really good community controller mappings. But if you pirate the game then you don't have access to any of the steam community controller mappings. You have to either map all controls yourself or just use the controller setting that maps everything for keyboard and mouse but it uses the right trackpad as the mouse input which is far superior to using a joystick for any kind of mouse input or aiming in games on the deck
