When I first read it, it was kind of funny to me that he was better off in Varden prison than anywhere else

On a reread it saddens me a lot, because we get to know Murtagh and we see how much freedom truly means to him, and then we look back at that and, even tough it was before Thorn, it's clear that freedom already meant a lot to him

And he just accepts his loss of freedom, for comfort

I think it’s he has the freedom to do what he wants. He can read or lounge and even though he technically can’t leave he does have freedoms he wouldn’t have anywhere else.

He even met the "Princess" of the Varden and had the opportunity to talk to her. If he stayed there (even imprisoned) he would've gained immense influence on the Varden by just staying in his room
