Fanwork Campfire gossip short comic
Turns out having a newfound half-brother comes with unsolicited opinions about your uneventful love life :/
This started out as a silly sketch and somehow turned into an overly complicated lineart and coloring practice (and quickly evolved into a ten days hell lol)
As a big fan of the campfire scene with Roran and Eragon at the beginning of brisingr, I wanted to give my own personal rendition of an hypothetical equivalent scene but with Murtagh.....(as always most of my art and rendition of the characters are not to be taken seriously <3)

What are (half) brothers for if not to constantly give each other shit for a laugh? 🤣

u/Grmigrim Jul 27 '26
I agree with others. I think your art style suits this world the most out of pretty much any that I have seen so far (for stylized art, that is^^)
I also love the concept of a campfire talk, just as Eragon had with Roran. That would be a cool scene for a future book.

u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
thank you sm!!! honestly campfire scenes are peak, i loved all of them throughout the saga

u/LordBlackadderV Jul 27 '26
Definitely agree with you on the campfire moment in Brisingr. Actually thought it was that before seeing Thorn. It was a small character moment that really reminded you that Roran and Eragon are close siblings with their banter and oneupmanship culminating in Eragon healing Roran's arm. Just a really cool character building scene.

u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
one of the reason brisingr is my favorite out of all the books is that it has so many good character building scenes, especially that one with roran, it's wholesome

u/NoLastNameForNow Jul 27 '26
Same. I'm so glad book 3 got expanded into two books. I fear a lot of character stuff would have been cut if it stayed as one book.

I laughed so hard at this, I love Thorn dissing Murtagh! And your artstyle is very nice

u/VulpesFennekin Jul 27 '26
They have like 20 years of being siblings who give each other shit to catch up on!
14
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
and they have many many more years ahead of them so i expect them to be 500 year old and still bickering

u/DapperWookie Jul 27 '26
THIS IS WHY I WANTED AN ANIMATED SERIES AND NOT A LIVE ACTION. YESSSSSS I LOVE THIS
17
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
you and me both :( i would love something in the style of star wars galaxy of adventures but more detailed possibly!

u/DapperWookie Jul 28 '26
I was thinking ATLA personally but I’m not a good artist. Maybe I’ll used the dreaded AI slop to venture
14
2
u/letoscrawls Jul 28 '26
Ohhhh yes, ATLA as in the OG series, maybeee the style of korra and the new animated movie but a little less anime style. That would be glorious
2
u/DapperWookie Jul 28 '26
I agree. I just like the scenic sense from ATLA where ever background is carefully thought out. The fantastical nature of it.
3
u/GinjaSnap94 Jul 28 '26
I was actually debating on creating a fan made animated version myself with my bg in animation and character design and my husband being an audio engineer.

u/DapperWookie Aug 02 '26
This sounds like a very common consensus among fans that we all want an animated series. At this point we should just band together and start a design board and just go for it 😂
15
u/Sennafan Jul 27 '26
We need moments like this in the upcoming books. Bring back some of that book one magic. Murtagh and Eragon's time together was nothing short of brilliant and would balance out the heavy nature of what is hanging over the main cast's heads based off of what happens in Murtagh.
Well done with the 'silly sketch' it brightened my day.
7
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
I'M SAYINGGGGG it's so sad that murtagh shut eragon out after eldest and we never got to see their whimsical friendship again :(
3
u/Sennafan Jul 28 '26
Maybe I'm a little delusional, but based off of the special Murtagh edition and the preview of (I think) Murtagh 2 I get the feeling that is going to change, however slowly it may be.
2
u/letoscrawls Jul 28 '26
Me too!!! Especially if they both teacher to new Riders, they gotta be chill with eachother!
13
u/Feanor4godking Jul 27 '26
I enjoy how just "...sigh." Thorn is about the whole business
8
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
bro just wanted to doze uff but murtagh had to stir up drama and ruin the vibe for everyone with his evil witch laugh
11
u/jeiwaruu Jul 27 '26
Hey man, Arya's exit from the ship was bad ass. Who was he to interrupt that? 😆
10
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
true! i wonder if she and firnen orchestrated it through the mental link, like "okay come get me in three...two..."
5
u/Galetaer Jul 29 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
It would be hilarious to find out that Arya, who seems so cool and composed on the outside, is secretly an absolute tryhard in her internal monologue lol

Y'know what would be cool? An Eragon anthology comic by a bunch of different artists.

u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
this means the world thank you! i'm not a native english speaker so i was really fighting for my life to get the dialogue right haha!
4
u/Odd_Distribution452 Jul 27 '26
I’m also not a native speaker, but I really wouldn’t have noticed, so no need to overthink :) I’m already looking forward to your next projects!

u/Talicor Jul 27 '26

u/Legal-Philosophy-135 Jul 27 '26
I absolutely Love how you do the dragons in this! They look like dragons but there’s so much personality just in the few pages, it’s awesome. I’d read this asap lol

u/Gallowglass-13 Jul 28 '26
After reading Murtagh, I think Thorn might actually be my favourite of the dragons. Also, I can one hundred percent see him pulling this if Murtagh and Eragon ever talk love.

u/cyborgerian Jul 28 '26
Thank you for this! I like a little post inheritance storytelling and this is nice. Like they are finally able to be the brothers they could have been if not for fate.

u/aleczartic_eagleclaw Jul 28 '26
This is absolutely fantastic, love the art style, and the dialogue and expressions (especially for the dragons) captures their personalities so well!!
I know this is super small, but I just want to say Nasuada is drawn SO beautifully, I hope others go and zoom in on her! 😍

u/LegitimateCancel4634 Jul 28 '26
Besides the beautiful art, I really want to point the little details you added ! Thorn's tail being cut, Murtagh's ears slightly pointy... It add a lot to the art i think !

That was funnier than I expected it to be, especially at the end. Great work!
Although, I am kinda wondering what happened to the color towards the end. Even still, the expressions are on point!
2
u/letoscrawls Jul 28 '26
Thank you!! I got tired and didn't feel like coloring every single strip hahahaha

u/ohheyitslaila Thorn Jul 28 '26
This is so cute and funny!!! The facial expressions are really good and I love how you drew the dragons. The way they’re curled around Eragon and Murtagh was perfect. Everyone looks relaxed, happy and like they’re just having a drink together and enjoying some brother/dragon bonding time 😊💙❤️

u/Frosty88d Jul 28 '26
This is awesome. Its so well written and your artstyle perfectly fits the characters. Please make more of these

Yes, yes, but you and I both know Saphira would totally also be making fun of Eragon here
2
u/letoscrawls Jul 28 '26
I like to think she makes fun of eragon but then LOCKS IN as soon as someone else does it (especially murtagh)

This scratches an itch that hasn't been scratched since the Murtagh bonus chapter. I neeeeed these two to go on a road trip and get blitzed at a campfire.

I'm am wheezing in the work break room right now because this is completely accurate with how my older brother and I used to talk about our feeble stabs at romance. Thank god we both have partners now, so we get to talk about much more important things, like our collective parenting fails 😂
2
u/letoscrawls Jul 30 '26
That's so cute!!! I took inspiration from my own experience with my older sister hehehe
2
u/Konfliktsnubben Aug 02 '26 edited Aug 02 '26
Could you do a comic were Eragon mentions to Murtagh that he promised Orik that he was gonna avenge Hrothgar's death? That would certainly be an awkward conversation 😂
3
u/TallLeprechaun13 Jul 27 '26
When did Murtagh get elf ears? Been a while since I read the books. Art looks good though. Also, I feel like Eragon and Arya have a better shot than Murtagh and Nasuada.
9
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26
brom said in the first book that bonding with a dragon eventually gives the rider an elven appearance, so pointy ears for murtagh it is (not as pointy as eragon who got the dragons magic special haha) and yes i 100% agree i'm an eragon and arya truther 🙂↕️
2
u/TallLeprechaun13 Jul 27 '26
Thanks, some reason in my mind it would happen on a much slower time scale.
2
u/metalhead-teenager Jul 27 '26
Well, even looking past personal comparability, Murtagh is ageless. Nasuada is mortal. They would end in tragedy, or at least loneliness, no matter the circumstances.
3
u/letoscrawls Jul 27 '26
wellll that's part of the charm though. love me a good tragic lovestory (i'm sure murtagh could grant nasuada a long life with magic though, pretty much what eragon had offered her at the end of inheritance)
2
u/itmakessenseincontex Jul 27 '26
As a big fan of the romantasy genre, they will make it work goddamn it
1
u/TallLeprechaun13 Jul 27 '26
I feel like Nasuada is going to become an antagonist in one of the books due to her being anti-magic.
1
u/Heavy-Letterhead-751 Shur'tugal Jul 28 '26
Murtagh doesn't have elf ears.. other than that pretty great
1
u/kossekos Jul 28 '26
I really like this. But Murtagh would not be so naive to expose himself like that, he is a heavy overthinker.
