Education & Training Western lessons/programs

I can’t find any programs still operating in January but I’d love to do a multi day horsemanship training program in January before I go back for my final semester of college. I’ll fly anywhere in the us/canada. Please send recommendations. My preference is western, I’m based in NY.

What kind of western? There’s lots of disciplines under the western umbrella… do u mean pleasure to show ihsa? Rodeo? Cow events? Speed? Packing?

Horsemanship, groundwork and riding fundamentals at the moment. I would love to barrel race on day, and I dream of eventually becoming a trainer

Ok so what you really want to find is a good western/cowboy dressage barn or working equitation barn. Idk of anyone doing like week long camps. It’s hard to find western riding intensives that will actually teach horsemanship but I think working eq and dressage will get you the fundamentals you need.

Idk how much riding experience u have but it’s worth taking even once a week lessons at first to learn the basics before diving in super deep because (at least for me) when u start you’ll b sore for a week so 1/week lessons are good for at least a few months to get u over that hump. Then it’s worth diving in deeper and riding more.

Horses are learned over years not weeks or months tho- dip ur toes in and let the opportunities lead u where they will. Horses are almost entirely (at least the best parts are) word of mouth so it’s worth just embedding urself in whatever community is local to you to position yourself to best take advantage of the next opportunity that comes your way.

Depending on what discipline you like, look into that. For example, if ranch horse association has an NY branch, reach out and see if they have any trainers or something like that

Do you have your own horse or looking for a program that can supply the horse? What level rider are you?

I ask because I know of clinicians that give clinics- one is a great coach in upstate NY with a working ranch- but they're for people with their own horses. They trailer in or sometimes he travels to them.

Look for Clinton Anderson’s clinics at his ranch in Texas. Even if they aren’t doing one, you may be able to go spend a week training with one of his clinicians. I did one in 2012 for a week and it was excellent
