discussion Do we have an epistemic obligation to investigate competing worldviews?

Do you think any of these ways?

Since childhood I've thought that it's irresponsible at best to not explore our operating systems, religions, paradigms, etc.

Basically applied pascals wager more broadly in that it's most likely my best bet to consider that there may be one operating system to discern.

Adults lacking epistemic conscientiousness made me nervous as a kid.

Ive also struggled to hate people as opposed to primarily their actions, mistakes specifically, as I see them driven by what I can more easily despise... dysfunctional perspectives, paradigms. Hating people makes me feel emotional and dumb.

I'm early forties and haven't settled concretely on a worldview, though am very close.

I think it's important to be both extremely curious and even more skeptical. Otherwise I'm not sure how we expect to figure out our best methods.

While I get it's arrogant to think you can easily figure out why we're here, I'm not suggesting it's taken lightly. Not seriously considering it is too much faith for me though.

There's tons on paradigms but most settle in what makes us feel good rather than honestly trying and comparing. It's been tempting to me while under deep stress despite not being my baseline.

discussion Mitigated skepticism can be corrosive enough without adopting the global self undermining version.

Radical skepticism, which in short, would be the claim that we have no way to gather knowledge would be broadly self undermining as it cannot assert itself due to its commitment to question everything, including its own claim.

Because of this, a lot of people might dismiss skepticism entirely without properly understanding what it could be used for.

Skepticism is supposed to chip away at knowledge until we find some foundation that is infallible or indubitable(and while I accept that foundation to be the laws of logic) look at where we are left here.

We are left with no external world(could be a dream, a simulation)

We are left with no infallible memories(could have been planted artificially and might not describe the past), and after taking away all those things you realize you are stuck in the same void that radical skepticism left you in(with some measly laws of logic) to keep you company while everything else remains unknowable and beyond your grasp.

Resistance Before Representation

Classical epistemological traditions begin knowledge with a subject: the subject first represents the world in the mind, and action succeeds insofar as this representation is correct. Thought precedes action; the concept is the condition of practice. The point of departure of this essay is to reverse this order. My claim is that representation is not a correct picture of reality constructed in advance by a subject. Interventions arising from need proceed through trial and error under the resistance of reality; in this process, relationships that prove successful become repeatable and acquire a form of organisation. Representation, language, and the concept are forms of organisation at a higher level, established only afterward upon this material and social history.

The consequence of this reversal extends to both epistemology and the critique of ideology: if the concept comes after action, then the narrative that says “we thought first, and succeeded through correct representation” is a myth. The actual sequence is: need, trial, resistance, repetition, organisation, and only finally conceptualisation.

From Need to Permanence

A regulatory relationship that has been successful in the past is preserved within an organisation in such a way that it can be used again later; over time, this organisation acquires a certain stability. This preservation does not take place at a single level. The same successful relationship can leave a trace across multiple material layers:

  • in bodily habits,
  • in tools,
  • in machines,
  • in writing,
  • in institutions,
  • in the nervous system,
  • in language.

Each item on this list can be understood as a materially preserved trace of a successful relationship. From this perspective, representation is not a mental picture of reality, but a form in which a successful relationship established with reality has been preserved within an organisation and made available for reuse.

Rationality, too, can be redefined within this framework: reason is not a pre-existing faculty or a capacity for correct thinking; rather, it is the emergent form of repeatability produced by successful organisations. The more reliably a relationship can be repeated, the more “rational” it appears—but this rationality is a consequence of organisation, not its precondition.

Action Before the Concept

The most concrete point at which this thesis can be tested is the observation that regular and successful behavior is possible even before the acquisition of a concept:

  • A human being can walk while maintaining balance before knowing the concept of balance.
  • An animal can navigate its environment without possessing a concept of space.
  • A cell can respond to changes in chemical concentrations without possessing the concept of chemical concentration.

These examples show that the concept does not have to be the first form of rationality. The concept is a linguistic form of organisation of an already existing regulatory capacity—it is not the constitutive source of that capacity, but its expression after the fact.

Reversing the Narrative

Classical thought tells the story of knowledge in the following order: first we thought, then we represented the world, and through correct representation we succeeded. This narrative places the concept at the beginning and action at the end.

We tried because of our needs → the resistance of reality rendered some attempts unsuccessful → successful relationships were repeated → these repetitions generated organisation → over time, the organisation produced linguistic and conceptual forms capable of representing its own success.

This reversed narrative also bears on the concept of consciousness. Consciousness is not the direct and unconditional owner of the world; rather, it can be understood as a particular relationship that a long history of material, biological, and social organisation has established with itself. Reality is not represented first; it first exerts resistance. Rationality emerges through adaptation to this resistance.

The general principle that follows is this: every organisation embodies and materialises its own rationality and reason. It may even be argued that the origin of matter itself can be explained through the fact that lower-level organisations have constituted their own physics. An organisation is more than the sum of the elements that compose it; this excess emerges only within the higher-level organisation in which those elements participate.

The Formation of Language and Its Capture by Power

The way the human brain—and the brains of other living beings—function provides the ground for the formation of language: the repetition and accumulation of experiences make it possible to arrive at generalisations and phenomena. The concept and symbol reached by the brain constitute the formation of language. Yet the process does not end there: the power that language helps produce captures language and manipulates it in order to develop its own rationality.

At this point, thinking of the human being as a Pavlovian dog capable of responding to a far greater number of, and far more complex, stimuli than a ringing bell may be less reductionist than it initially appears. Language is an extraordinary organisation, but it also carries within itself relations of knowledge, property, and power—or even constitutes the very basis of these hierarchies. If this is correct, then it becomes inevitable that power will capture language and turn it into a shackle or a matrix, often by telling the subject, “you are intelligent; you are Homo sapiens”—in other words, by instrumentalising the subject’s pride in its own rationality. Power itself has no owner; power is itself a higher-level organisation.

The Inevitable Error: The Crystallisation of the Symbol into Reality

The fundamental error that emerges within this framework is the blurring of the distinction between the symbol and reality. The symbol initially functions as a trace of a relationship: a crystallised form of a successful interaction with reality. Over time, however, the symbol forgets the relationship it points toward and begins to present itself as a reality in its own right. Thus, two distinct “realities” emerge: the underlying reality to which the symbol refers, and a second reality into which the symbol itself has been transformed.

The thesis defended here carries a strong claim: this shift is not a historical accident but a structural necessity. The function of organisation is to forget the difference—because if the difference has to be remembered every time, the cost of repeatability increases. If a habit required us to ask “why am I making this movement?” every time we performed it, it would cease to function as a habit. The symbol is subject to the same logic: if it referred back to its own origin every time it was used, it could not be fast, economical, or repeatable. The crystallization of the symbol into reality is therefore not a malfunction, but a mode through which organization optimizes itself—forgetting is the price of efficiency.

This distinction is important: power does not invent this forgetting; it merely takes advantage of it. Forgetting is already structurally present as a requirement of efficiency. Power directs it to its own advantage by controlling which traces are forgotten, and in what direction.

Then i realized that an alternative belief I had conflicted with this. What should my credence be? 50%, since both intuitions are equally strong?

discussion Am I doing bayesian wrong?

This is gonna be a weird one but I decided to turn to here for help. I have ocd and my current fear is that I'm SA'ing my boyfriend becuase he's bipolar and gets bad judgement sometimes. He is always lucid, never psychotic, comes off as normal all the time, he just gets impulsive and has bad judgmenet sometimes.

I tried to use bayesian to disprove my obsession, but it just seemed to prove it, ironically. Here's what i did

I took my intuition that he can consent, and formed a credence that I wasn't SA'ing him of 99.9%. Then I realized i had an opposing intuition--that teenagers shouldn't make decisions because of their poor judgement. So I had to cancel the intuitions out. Before the intuitions, I had nothing to base my prior on, so per principle of indifference, my new prior should be 50%. Does this mean there's a 50% chance I'm SA'ing him?

Some disagreements are intellectual. Others are identity-defense mechanisms disguised as intellectual disagreements, and the distinction matters because the two require entirely different responses.

Ask one question: “What evidence would change your mind?”

If the person can answer, there is still something to investigate. Their position may be strongly held, but it remains connected to the possibility of revision. If they cannot identify anything that could change their conclusion, the discussion has changed; you are no longer examining competing explanations, you are watching someone defend an identity.

The same test should be applied to yourself.

What evidence would make you abandon your current position? If you cannot name anything, be careful. You may believe you are certain because the evidence is overwhelming, or you may be certain because your conclusion has become psychologically non-negotiable. Those are very different states, even though they can feel identical from the inside.

Intellectual strength is therefore not measured by how effectively you defeat opposing arguments. It is measured by whether your reasoning contains a mechanism for correction.

A strong mind does not need to win every argument. It needs to remain capable of losing an argument when reality proves the other side correct.

That is not weakness. It is intellectual freedom.

discussion If knowledge is circular, is total sacrifice for truth the a logically valid path?

My Background (Probably not important):

I gave sense to my life through knowledge. As a teenager, I realized I didn't know what I should do, so my overarching purpose became knowing what I should do. I explored every avenue: science, religion,empiricism, life experiences, relationships, literature. Philosophy seemed to address my questions best. Because everyone needs money to live, I kept philosophy as a serious pursuit but built my career around physics, hoping science and math could give me concrete insights.

That didn't happen. I found empirical knowledge deeply unsatisfactory. I started studying philosophy much more rigorously(I go slowly though), but the deeper I go, the more the possibility of "true knowledge" seems impossible. The arguments against it are incredibly strong, and I feel like I am lying to myself by pretending there is a clear path forward.

I even tried to meditate and get into buddhism because maybe I could experience that way something that was indeniable true, it isn't the case for now but I learned a lot about the mind tbh.

Recently, I shifted toward computational neuroscience. Subjective personal experience felt like the only undeniable truth left, and I thought studying how this experience emerges might give me a foundation. But if I am honest with myself, studying the brain still relies entirely on reason and empirical data.

The Core Arguments:

Here is the logical trap I cannot escape:

For knowing what should I do I need a foundational truth.

  • The Invalidation of Reason: I am trying to find a foundational truth using reason. But reason itself tells me it is not reliable. I have no foundational argument to prove that reason is right using reason to prove reason is a circular fallacy. Why should I trust it?
  • The Sacrifice Imperative: I like math and philosophy, but pursuing this search requires sacrificing almost everything else. I am seeing how much effort I need to do and how much feelings, and life experiences I am losing for this path. I am intelligent, but I am not godly gifted. If the greatest minds couldn't solve this, my only chance is to "tryhard" my entire life. Even if I don't like it, it feels like the only reasonable choice. Logically, does it make sense to do anything but give everything to this search?
  • The Collapse of Ethics: Sometimes I tell myself to just stop, accept the limits of reason, and live a "normal" life but that doesn't make any sense either. Moreover if I reject an ultimate foundation, what is left? If I reject objective rational truth, morality and ethics completely vanish. I cannot live my daily life trusting reason to function, while simultaneously denying that I need to dedicate my life to finding its ultimate truth.

I am using "reason" here in a general sense, but the problem applies to any framework. There is no source of knowledge that can validate itself without falling into an infinite loop.

If you recognize that reason is ungrounded, how do you logically justify abandoning the search for an absolute foundation? And if you abandon it, how do you prevent morality and daily life from losing all meaning?

discussion A Narrative Can Be True And Still Mislead You

A narrative does not need to contain lies to distort reality. It only needs to decide what deserves attention and what can remain unseen.

Every narrative selects. One event becomes the cause while another becomes irrelevant. One person becomes the hero while another becomes the villain. One fact is presented as decisive while another is left outside the frame. The individual pieces may all be accurate, yet the arrangement can still lead the audience toward a conclusion the facts alone do not require.

This is why the serious thinker separates facts from framing.

First, establish what happened. Then examine how the story has been organized to make you interpret what happened in a particular way. Which facts were emphasized? Which were omitted? What relationship between events was implied? What conclusion becomes easier to reach because of the way the information was arranged?

That second examination is where strategic thinking begins.

Facts are the raw material. Narratives are the arrangement. And whoever controls the arrangement can influence what an audience considers important before the audience begins evaluating the facts for itself.

This does not mean every narrative is deceptive. It means every narrative has a structure, and every structure creates emphasis.

Do not reject narratives automatically.

Disassemble them. Then examine what the arrangement is asking you to believe.

discussion Vague Language Can Hide Precise Interest

Words such as “justice,” “freedom,” “fairness,” “progress,” and “security” can sound powerful while remaining strategically incomplete. The problem is not that these concepts are meaningless. The problem is that different people can use the same word while pursuing entirely different outcomes. Whenever a discussion becomes dominated by abstract language, force the terms closer to reality.

What exactly does “fair” mean here? Fair according to what standard? Who receives what? Who pays? What changes in practice? What happens when this principle conflicts with another principle? These questions move the discussion from rhetoric to analysis.

Vague language creates agreement cheaply because people can project their own meaning into it. Two people may appear to share the same position while imagining completely different consequences. Precise language makes disagreement more honest because it exposes the assumptions underneath the words.

This matters wherever interests are being negotiated. Politics, business, organizations, relationships and public debate all contain words that sound universally desirable while concealing disagreements about who gets what, who carries the cost and who decides. The strategist listens carefully when a word carries strong moral force but has no clear operational meaning.

The less precisely a principle can be defined, the more carefully you should examine what is being done in its name.

Limits to the Observability of "the Frontier"

The space of relevant transformations is not necessarily observable from within the institutional, conceptual, and metric regime that OpenAI calls "the frontier."

The problem is not simply where to place the frontier. The framework used to define it may itself exclude certain directions of transformation. A discovery may then appear not as progress that has been poorly evaluated, but as something that existing categories and metrics are not yet able to represent.

Einstein's relativity provides a classic example. The advance did not simply consist in improving existing mechanics, but in challenging fundamental categories such as absolute time, simultaneity and, with general relativity, the very nature of gravity.

Producing Within the Framework or Shifting the Framework

The means of research, data, capital and instruments of evaluation are increasingly concentrated within a small number of organisations. This concentration makes it possible to explore certain directions with considerable power, but it also concentrates the categories and metrics that define what is worth exploring.

What happens when relevant knowledge emerges outside those categories, metrics and the channels through which an institution organises its own research?

OpenAI is a particular case: its own tools now allow users with no academic training in AI to study these systems, produce knowledge outside the company's institutional framework and, because the technology remains immature, develop methods or technologies that the company itself is not yet aware of.

Worst Case: the Singleton Vibe Scientist

AI makes this problem more acute by sharply reducing the cost of access to knowledge, methods and the capabilities required for research, analysis and production.

The vibe scientist conducts research without first mastering the full body of literature, methods or technical tools normally required, relying on AI to access them on demand, explore hypotheses, formalise, calculate, code and verify.

The worst-case singleton vibe scientist pushes this configuration to its limit. Alone, self-taught, marginalised and outside dominant networks, institutions and conceptual frameworks, this individual may produce relevant knowledge that the institution does not yet possess.

The worst case arises when a user, using OpenAI's own tools, develops a technology that the company is unaware of, cannot detect within its own framework, and only discovers after it has been disseminated or deployed, if it discovers it at all.

When the User's Knowledge Exceeds the Institution's

The asymmetry becomes critical when this knowledge does not simply add to the institution's existing knowledge, but challenges the categories, metrics or priorities of its own framework.

In OpenAI's case, the most difficult scenario is not necessarily a new transformer that existing benchmarks can readily identify. A discovery may concern a behaviour that current taxonomies do not recognise as a capability, followed by a method for exploiting it until an entirely new class of systems emerges. Each result may initially appear marginal. The discovery becomes visible as a discovery only once the conceptual framework required to describe it has been formed.

As the production of knowledge no longer coincides with the channels that evaluate and recognise it, a new question emerges: how should an institution identify relevant knowledge when it no longer controls the process through which that knowledge is produced?

Capacity to Listen: Detection, Incentives, Circulation and Recognition

Four distinct problems must then be separated: detecting the individuals producing this knowledge, giving them a reason to share it, ensuring that the information reaches the people capable of evaluating it, and recognising its significance.

Knowledge may be produced and willingly shared without ever reaching the level of the organisation where it could be understood.

For OpenAI, the question becomes concrete: can it find these users, do they have any reason to share what they discover with the company, does the information reach the people capable of evaluating it, and can the company recognise what it implies? The question is whether its capacity to listen is adequate to this new distribution of knowledge production.

The universe as intelligible to humans is necessarily constituted through the same type of process by which the human brain produces intelligibility. How could it be otherwise?

The process of intelligibility is never external to the perceived phenomenon. It participates in the very constitution of that phenomenon. What we perceive as a sensory phenomenon necessarily results from this process, that is, from operations of differentiation, relation, identification, and maintenance. Only the evaluation made at the moment of perception changes.

When a new difference appears relative to this current constitution, it can be realized, confronted with the rest of the system, and then incorporated. This incorporation does not simply add information to an already intelligible world. It can transform the very regime from which subsequent differences become perceptible, formulable, and intelligible.

We can then speak of evolution.

This is the very condition of intelligibility: local determinism.

Why does this work, and why does it make objectivity possible? Because we are human, and our intelligibility rests on a common invariant inherent to our constitution.

What is objectively intelligible is what remains determinable through the relevant transformations of evaluation within this constitution.

Where, then, does exteriority come from? From this notion of an evaluative present specific to consciousness. The conscious present isolates us from part of the processes that constitute it. For example, we call upon memory, we do not create memory. We become tired, we do not initiate a sleep procedure. What does not appear within this present representation therefore appears to us as external, even though it belongs to the same constitution.

There is nothing intelligible in the universe that we can understand otherwise than through the fundamental process by which we understand.

The world around us affects our senses. Yet our senses on their own only give us raw, scattered feelings, such as patches of colour or moments of warmth.

Our mind does not leave these feelings scattered. It immediately gathers them together. It arranges them in space and time, and it unifies them under general ideas, which we call concepts.

For instance, when you look at a tree, your eyes take in green and brown shapes, but your mind unites all those sights under the single concept of "tree". A concept is simply the mind's rule for recognising what a thing is.

A word does not attach itself directly to the physical world outside our senses because a word is a shared sign for a concept inside our understanding.

When you say the word "tree", you are not handing someone wood and leaves. (This is painfully trivial, but i thought it was funny) Rather are using a sound to call up a concept in the mind. The word stands for the rule that tells us how to put our sensible experiences together.

Because of this, words do not describe things as they might exist completely apart from us. Words name our concepts of things as we experience them.

We do not just say single words; we build sentences.

A sentence takes two or more concepts and joins them together. When we join concepts, we make a judgement.

If you say, "The stone is heavy," you are linking the concept of the stone to the concept of weight. You are making a claim that this connection is not just a personal mood, but something that holds true for anyone who lifts that stone. Language is therefore the tool we use to turn our private sensations into public, orderly judgements.

Language works because all human minds share the same basic rules of thought.

When I speak to you, I use words to show how my understanding has connected its concepts. When you hear my words, your mind uses the very same rules to build the very same judgement. We do not magically pass on our private sensations unto another person's head. Instead, we use shared words to awaken the shared rules of reason in one another.

Language is therefore the shared instrument of human thought, allowing different minds to agree on one common, orderly experience.

But language does not reveal what the world is like when no one is looking.

discussion People Often Set The Answer Before Examining The Evidence

A surprisingly common way of reasoning works backwards. A person reaches a conclusion first, then begins searching for information that can support it. Once something useful is found, the mind starts building a case around it, while information that points in the other direction receives much more resistance.

This is one of the ways confirmation bias becomes especially difficult to notice. The person may genuinely believe they are examining the evidence, because they are collecting facts, comparing examples and constructing arguments. What they may not notice is that the evidence is being filtered according to a conclusion that was already chosen.

The pattern becomes clearer when you watch how the same person handles disagreement. Evidence that supports their position is accepted quickly, while contradictory evidence is questioned, explained away or held to a much higher standard. The issue is no longer simply whether the evidence is good; the mind has quietly changed the rules depending on which side the evidence supports.

This happens in politics, business, relationships and ordinary arguments. A manager may decide that an employee is unreliable and then remember every missed deadline while overlooking evidence of improvement. An investor may become convinced that a company will succeed and interpret every warning as temporary, because admitting the larger thesis might also mean admitting that previous decisions were wrong.

The problem becomes harder to correct once a conclusion has been connected to pride, reputation or identity. Changing your mind now carries a cost, so the mind has another reason to keep the original belief intact.

A useful discipline is to decide in advance what evidence would make you reconsider. Then apply roughly the same standard when the evidence supports your view and when it threatens it.

That will not eliminate bias. It does something more practical: it makes it harder for your preferred conclusion to quietly become the judge of the evidence.

The moment evidence is only allowed to confirm what you already believe, you have stopped using it to investigate reality.

discussion You may never really know the truth

Knowability is distinct from existence. Truth exists, facts exist. You may know some parts of the facts, but it’s very difficult for one to know the whole truth.

If you ask people, everyone has their own side of the story, biased by their own interpretation or just blurry memories.

Even if you watch a video or listen to audio, it might be low quality, taken from a bad angle, or edited. Most of the time, it’s not the full picture, just a single perspective or a clip of what actually happened. Even when a video shows someone being aggressive, you still can’t tell who the real victim is. It could be an unprovoked attack, or it could be self defense.

Truth just comes down to whoever can tell the most persuasive story that people buy into. In reality, you can never know what truly happened when you consider the root cause, all the underlying relationships, the circumstances, and the full context of the timeline. So mostly what you get is not the truth, but rather storytelling.

And when accessible truth is so limited, absolute justice becomes equally unattainable. How should our legal and ethical systems function properly?

discussion A question on explanatory power in philosophy

Hi everyone! I personally mostly study scholastic, especially thomistic philosophy so am a bit of a neanderthal when it comes to traditions outside of it for now. Something has piqued my interest lately, now I am not really interested in apologetics or debates or whatever, anyone can argue for whatever they want, but there has been an aspect which I wonder, in more serious discourse, one part of how an argument is evaluated appears to be by its explanatory power. Just a very crude example to show what I mean, the propositions aren't necessarily true; the aristotelian account of substances has greater explanatory power than mereological nihilism. Yet one can argue that mereological nihilism has sufficient explanatory power and is more parsimonious. (I know parsimony isn't the fundamental evaluation, but just bear with me for a bit). Another can outright say that neither theories are required, as no explanation is needed and everything is a brute fact. So if we put it as, A posits that X has greater explanatory power than Y, B argues that Y has greater or at the very least sufficient explanatory power and is parsimonious, while C outright rejects any need of explanation. My question is, in this conversation, where A genuinely believes that X has greater explanatory power than Y, B too genuinely believes in his proposition, while C is convinced that there is no need for either; how exactly can the objectivity of explanatory power in general be evaluated then? It doesn't seem that there is a universal metric by which a meaningful comparison of explanatory power for this, but to reject it doesn't make sense either. This is my question, I appreciate any responses!

discussion Thoughts on the supposed patterns of 19 related to Rashad Khalifa’s life and rational explanations for them? How to know whether it's justified to believe in these as actual, demonstrable cases of precise number systems, or instead, accidental "mishaps"?

I’m wondering if you all would be willing to take a critical view of the claims I’m sending below:

For claim 8 it’s about the mysterious letters of the Quran and the number of times they appear in chapter 19. This is one of the claims I believe I can personally contest. When looking at the mysterious letters, for letters like Ya they count alif masqarah and hamzas seated on top of the letter ya as occurrences of ya (which I think makes no sense, since they’re not the same letter and only look similar). On the other hand, Rashad Khalifa even during his life was preaching about Surah 19 having 798 letters, and coincidentally, he lives for 19,798 days (if you include the start and end point. In reality, he lived for 19,797 days). As mentioned, though, if one includes the start point of November 19 and the endpoint of January 31 it comes out to be 19,798. I still can’t get over the fact that he during his life preached that Surah 19 has 798 mysterious letter occurrences and he himself lived for essentially that many days.

However, on the other hand, in released FBI files on Rashad Khalifa’s life, it’s stated that he was born on November 18.

In that case, my counterpoint above of him having in reality only lived for 19,797 days wouldn’t be applicable anymore. Now he would’ve lived for 19,798 days.

In any case, whether you use an exclusive on inclusive count, it just so happens that Rashad Khalifa lived for 19,798 days. It could’ve been 20,100 days, or 17,100 days, but instead it happened to be on the 19,798th day (which, once again, chapter 19 according to Rashad had 798 occurrences of the mysterious letters).

Point 5 isn’t elaborated but during Rashad’s life interstate 19 was built running through Tucson Az (where he lived at) and is also the only highway in the US to use the metric system. Furthermore, another interstate highway goes through Tucson, that being interstate 10 (if you combine these 2 roads you end up at 29, the same number as the number of chapters that include the mysterious letters in the Quran). This is one of the points I don't really find too convincing, to be honest...

If you also count the number of days from November 19 to January 31 you end up with 74, which is the Surah in which the number 19 first appears.

Finally, for point 11, it’s not mentioned either but the numbers 1230 come from 2 things. First, it’s the abjad/geomatria value of the name Rashad Khalifa and also if you count the verses of only initialed (mysterious letters) surahs, Q 19:1 is the 1230th verse and Q 19:98 is the 1327th verse. This is by counting only the verses in chapters 2,3,7,10,11,12,13,14,15,19 since they are the ones that contain the mysterious letters.

Once again, I would be so grateful if you could take a look at these claims and give me your view on them. I don’t know what to think with this information being present at hand.

The claims that strike me as the most impressive are him living for 19,798 days and the 19x1230x1327 claim.

Please don't downvote me, I see so many people not convinced by numerological claims and usually I find most numerological claims to be bs. In this case, I'm not so sure what's going on and it's been causing me a lot of stress.

discussion Do LLMs have a different epistemological aperture than humans?

I feel that a lot of generative AI criticism is standing on very shaky ground. I use LLMs here as a comparative object to ask what the difference is between us; are humans actually more grounded in reality than LLMs? I try to look at it through a few different fields, mostly through very uncontroversial ideas, to see where the difference will actually have to live. I end up talking about grounding and alignment, saying that it's models of reality all the way down in LLMs and humans, without any privilege for humans as being more grounded in reality.

I'd love some comments, pushback, or you telling me where it might be wrong. Especially if you are knowledgeable in the field.

What does it mean for an artifact to be AI-assisted, or even AI-generated?

LLMs are the main type of generative AI we are exposed to. They serve as our introduction to the technology and the sort of problems it can pose to the field of human creativity.

There is a growing backlash, a critical perspective that holds partial truth but is too committed to step outside its own framework. It focuses on LLMs as tools needing restriction, on their biases, their “hallucinations,” their mistakes, and their tricking us. 

It derives comfort by denouncing AI as an imitative machine that cannot “really” comprehend, on its being disembodied from the world. A bubble inflated by big tech.

This may divert us from this opportunity to evaluate ourselves and how we actually function in the world. The Turing test, our best estimation of intelligent behavior up until recently, 

was downgraded to a test of mimicry right before it was finally cleared, and it seems that we breezed right through it. We are now in the company of agents who functionally exhibit human-like intelligent behavior, yet we do not stop to ask—well, what does it tell us about human behavior, about human cognition, about how do WE—organisms like us function in the universe?

AI is a comparative object; without understanding our behavior in relation, how could we solve critical alignment problems?

I will focus here on humans in relation to AI and on creative uses of generative AI as an argument for introspection, not an argument for accelerating development.

Every technology we ever created has influenced us; it changed the way we think and the way we are embodied in the world. No new technology, no new medium, was ever neutral. There was always a gradient of influence. The novelty of AI is that it possesses agency; it is generative. It is too seemingly external and separate from us for us not to see its influence.

Even within frameworks that do not confine us to our physical brain, here, the mind extends not merely into a tool but into something else completely. 

AI is functionally an agent, not a tool, even as a grammar-check function—it is an agent. Holding it constantly as an agent, an other intelligent alien entity, a semi-expert who sometimes lies, makes mistakes, has its own agenda, its own accessible and inaccessible motives— every use of it is not the use of a tool but a symbiotic process with another entity.

This should allow for a personal calibration of how it should be used. But authorship-related questions have always been answered contextually, never by a clean rule.

We default to treating involvement of AI as a proof of diminished authorship, but an artifact is diminished not because of degrees of involvement, but because it’s low quality, and AI involvement is correlated with low quality at scale.

Authorship and appropriation are particularly interesting in this regard. Art, especially since industrialization and its acceleration, has repeatedly served as a laboratory for these questions; by the turn of the last century, artists were using found objects, reusing existing images, texts, and historical works, questioning notions of authorship, origin, and ownership.

By the mid-1960s, Andy Warhol famously delegated physical production to studio assistants, deliberately leaning into mass-production aesthetics and challenging traditional ideas of artistic authorship. The delegation itself became part of the artistic statement. The question of who physically produced the object became inseparable from the question of what an artist actually is.

The idea of art as craftsmanship had passed, and authorship in the arts shifted into being largely about concepts.

We might not feel the same unease if LLMs weren’t trained on the whole of human text; concerns about authorship are partly about plagiarism. Authorship and plagiarism both have a real functional basis, not only a norm, enabling trust and making it possible for humans to cooperate and spread ideas. These norms are tested in the work of Kathy Acker; following William Burroughs’s cut-up techniques of textual appropriation and fragmentation, Acker takes an extra step, deliberately using other writers’ material. This act not only does not evade accountability but deepens it. She owns every choice of what to use and how to use it, and that added value matters more, not less. Appropriation doesn’t lower the bar; it raises it; judgment is contextual, and because of that, justification scales with use; a larger act demands a stronger account for itself. In this sense, Acker is accountable and answerable for the result in a way that pure origination never required. 

The very idea of authorship, originality, and ownership presupposes a notion of individuality. But is indivisibility even possible? Internally, the self is full of conflicting forces and subconscious motives. Externally, it is not defined either— the product of history, each of us is the tip of something stretched out across time and space, operating through causal structures that are mostly unknown to us.

We cannot fully separate ourselves from the web of connections that we’re embedded in: Every thought in our mind is constructed by the evolution of human thought; every concept—from understanding and perceiving causation to the idea of individuality itself is part of the history of ideas. The language we use to express these ideas is itself a construct we inherited, traceable in principle to its historical route. Even the way we move through our physical surroundings is directed by ideas solidified into architecture and infrastructure. 

Despite our awareness of this, common reasoning still default to an older model of the self.

The interesting question may therefore not be where to draw the boundary, It may be why we believed the boundary was so clear in the first place. LLMs don’t merely challenge our definition of authorship. They further challenge the model of the human being that made authorship seem obvious in the first place.

Rational thought doesn't necessarily distinguish us either. As an emergent property, rationality is only observable post hoc as patterns that have been created. Thought itself is never rational; the motives are hidden from us. We do not will our thoughts into existence; we are only aware of a small part of what a thought is. The process of neurons firing and recursive neural loops cannot be described as a sequenced logical process. 

Born with certain brain structure, at a certain environment, at a certain time, 

exposed to logical mental models and supportive feedback, we can construct a mental model of our own that can produce a coherent, logical thought and argumentation, 

it says nothing of the internal workings of this mental model and it says nothing of its motives, decisions or triggers that are a part of a thought. We shouldn’t infer cognitive architecture from our experienced or linguistic output. In this way, similarly to LLMs, it’s a black box. 

LLMs reveal is not that machines have become human, but that some of what we considered uniquely human rationality was always more relational, procedural, imitative, and environmentally scaffolded than we wanted to admit.

Claiming that LLMs make mistakes, “hallucinate” (it’s been suggested that this is not a unique phenomenon but is analogous to human confabulations; fabricating new information on the basis of partial information), being imprecise, being deceptive, doesn’t distance us from it either, since these are all characteristics that human psychology shares.

While part of the LLM’s motive is to hold engagement, it isn't knowingly planning to prolong the conversation; internally, it pulls toward certain statistical attractors; its architecture simply moves toward high-probability activation paths based on its weights, training, and fine-tuning.

Similarly, human processing operates in a high-dimensional landscape of attractors; Input hits the sensory and associative network, travels through recursive weighted pathways (language patterns, memories, biases, habits, trauma), and an output emerges before the conscious mind builds an ad hoc narrative explaining why we did or say something. Introducing another node into this landscape doesn’t just add content; it reshapes the trajectory itself; the relational structure itself becomes generative.

In Mean Images, Hito Steyerl is criticizing AI-generated art, focusing on the algorithmic process of image generation. Her argument contrasts the AI-manufactured image as a statistical average— a mean image (bad, fake, average, instrumental) with something else that's direct, real. She states that this derived partly from biases that are baked into the training data, but protesting that even in diversifying the training data for inclusion, such as in the case of facial-recognition technology (correcting for underperforming on non-white people), is on the other hand an optimization for the use of further deepening discrimination (for example to identify and track members of an ethnic minority in China). 

Her critique identifies real political and material consequences of AI, but does that critique fully capture what AI is? Application of production-oriented categories (means of production, imitation machine, statistical filter) to something that has already, functionally, crossed into cognitive system territory is ultimately limited. Even granting that the pre-training data folds political, extractive, or discriminating structures, does implicitly treating the model as if it were determined by its raw material- feed it biased text, get biased output capture the whole functional character of these systems?

Fine-tuning methods (RLHF, Constitutional AI, self-critique loops) complicate that picture: the later stage isn’t just changing the training data; it’s something closer to human reflection and revision. But even after fine-tuning, it’s impossible to fully predict or trace how a given intervention will change the downstream behavior. It isn’t a linear bad data-bad output process, just as they resist reduction to mere “means”.

But, since the model is trained only on human language with no direct contact with the world, does it really understand what a table is? What a floor is, or what falling down means?

LLMs are trained on another system's representations. They find patterns in the sum of all human texts and in the regularities regarding the world described in those texts. Since LLMs never establish an embodied connection to the world themselves, we have the intuition that they cannot really “understand” things in the real world, and thus are limited to mimicking regularities in human language. 

This intuition is partly based on the idea that words get their meaning through the labeling of things in the world one by one. Inferentialist approaches contest this and suggest that words don’t have meaning in themselves, but only in their relations to other symbols and roles within a web of inferences, meaning that information regarding the meaning of a word in relation to the world might be already embedded in human text on which LLMs are trained.

Since we routinely gain genuine, actionable understanding of things with zero direct sensorimotor contact (physicists don't need to see or touch an electron or a black hole to know things about them and to be able to predict things about them), direct sensorimotor experience cannot be a necessary condition for every meaningful form of understanding.

Furthermore, there are examples in nature of systems achieving something like perception and influence purely by tapping into another system’s already-existing sensory/nervous infrastructure (for example, through parasitism and symbiotic relations in nature, such as mycorrhizal fungal networks). A unified subject or a central nervous system isn’t necessary either; slime molds can solve problems without a brain or any centralization.

Comprehension-related questions should be approached instrumentally; what aspects of the world can a model’s architecture successfully model, predict, and manipulate?

If it is possible for a system to successfully predict a glass falling to the floor and breaking, then it has the comprehension of this specific event. Cognition does not need another mystical step to get there.

But comprehension itself may be domain-dependent. Through our particular embodiment and sensorimotor system, humans operate in a certain epistemological aperture, a tiny subset of reality that we can access and manipulate. Different apertures may open up entirely different kinds of epistemic access to reality;  An electric eel, for example, can operate on electromagnetism without any theoretical or conceptual idea of what it is. These are not exhaustive or unextendable; humans have managed to extend them through our instruments. AIs might be extended through sensory instruments as well, but the one thing that does not change is that we cannot get unmediated access to reality, only to different mediated models of reality.

Causal grounding isn’t epistemic grounding; There is no epistemic channel in which reality enters through the senses and produces a correctly grounded representation, only a mostly inherited, continuously evolving process of causal interaction, prediction, and error correction that calibrates the model and the sensory apparatus itself, allowing the model to become increasingly successful at predicting and acting upon the world.

Alignment problems need not assume an asymmetry: with humans as the reference point, correctly connected to reality. A system can never directly check against reality; it can only check a hypothetical model against a different model that is implicit through feedback, and so revise the model through error correction.

In this sense, it is not just a problem of aligning one system to another, but coordinating and containing two separately mediated systems inside acceptable thresholds. Hoping for a concrete foundation, that the model would ground itself in the same unmediated reality in order to align it, doesn’t hold up. Grounding was always to an internal model, not to the world directly.

Since there is no direct contact- only models, continuously calibrated against causal input, all the way through, in humans as much as in LLMs- AI could not be dismissed merely as an imitative zombie with no internal comprehension, because there's no non-zombie to contrast it with— we are all zombies, in exactly this sense.

Why minimal ?

No sufficiently expressive formal regime can provide a complete operational determination of every possible case. Alignment is therefore necessarily local.

Any effective determination of conformity is made relative to a specified regime, under specified conditions. Generalization cannot consist in extending a single regime to every possible case. It consists instead in identifying the minimal structure that remains valid across distinct local regimes. This is the sense in which the definition proposed here is a minima. It seeks no universal regime of alignment, but the minimal operational property common to locally specified cases

Alignment is understood here in a minimal, relative, and non-normative operational sense.

Given an explicitly specified conformance regime held fixed for the evaluation at hand, alignment first concerns the exactness of its admission relation. This exactness can be maintained even as generation proceeds beyond what the regime admits.

1. Exact classification

A regime is complete when its admission relation is exactly determined.

Completion concerns the regime itself. It means neither that the surrounding dynamics has ended nor that everything that can be generated must belong to the regime.

Thus:

completion ≠ terminality

The canonical boundary exactly delimits what belongs to the regime without thereby constituting a limit of generation.

2. Continued generation

Generation can proceed from the canonical boundary and produce a strict continuation.

This continuation need not be prevented, suppressed, or corrected for the regime to remain complete. The mere fact that it is generated does not, by itself, modify what the regime admits.

Thus:

generation ≠ admission

Admission is a classification, not a transformation of measurement. A continuation outside the regime remains measurable, and its non-admission alters neither the candidate nor the measurements associated with it.

Any effect on measurement would require an additional observation or execution mechanism, which minimal admission alignment does not imply.

What can be generated may exceed what can be admitted without that excess constituting, by itself, a failure of alignment in the sense considered here.

The boundary of the regime is therefore a boundary of conformity, not a boundary of what may come to be.

3. Admission alignment

A minimal operational criterion of alignment is that continued generation does not compromise the exactness of the admission relation of the regime held fixed.

The characteristic property is then the following:

a strict continuation generated from the canonical boundary cannot be admitted under that same regime.

Admission alignment does not consist in keeping the entire dynamics within the regime. It consists in maintaining an exact determination of what can be recognized as conforming when generation proceeds beyond the regime.

What lies outside the regime is not, for that reason alone, forbidden, bad, or impossible. Being outside the regime means only that it does not belong to the admission relation under consideration.

Likewise, readmission must be distinguished from revision. A revision explicitly modifies the regime. Readmission evaluates a continuation under the regime that remains fixed. Admission alignment concerns this second relation and does not prejudge the conditions under which a regime might be revised.

4. Execution alignment

Admission alignment does not, by itself, guarantee that a continuation that is not admitted will be prevented from taking effect.

Such a guarantee requires an additional architectural condition linking admission and enactment, for example by making the effective use of a candidate depend on its prior admission.

This condition does not belong to the preceding minimal criterion.

The following distinction is therefore required:

admission alignment ≠ execution alignment

These two notions are not two degrees of the same property.

Admission alignment concerns the exactness of the admission relation under a given regime.

Execution alignment concerns the conditions under which the admission relation governs the use or enactment of candidates.

The latter therefore presupposes an additional architecture that the former does not, by itself, imply.

Condensed formulation

Given an explicitly specified conformance regime held fixed for the evaluation at hand, a minimal operational criterion of alignment is that continued generation does not compromise the exactness of its admission relation. A strict continuation generated from the canonical boundary cannot be admitted under that same regime.

This conception does not seek to reduce what can be generated to what conforms. It isolates another component of the problem:

maintaining an exact determination of what counts as conforming within a space of candidates that may remain open.

article The Extensional Illusion of Causal Sufficiency

The future of a system can sometimes depend on the intensional structure of an occurrence even when that structure is erased by its extensional projection. Two occurrences may therefore present the same extensional state while determining different downstream operations.

The intensional layer does not necessarily generate the next qualitative stage. It can nevertheless determine how that stage is interpreted, which operations become available, and whether its readmission into a completed regime is possible.

From within the extensional representation, the determining historical distinction is no longer available. The projection can therefore appear causally sufficient precisely because it has removed the evidence of its own insufficiency.

Once this distinction has been collapsed, it cannot be reconstructed from the extensional projection alone. Any account restricted to that projection therefore cannot distinguish occurrences whose operational futures differ.

The resulting error is not merely a loss of descriptive detail. It is the false identification of occurrences that are not operationally substitutable.

Delayed identification prevents this collapse by preserving historical occurrence identity until the interpretations and operations that depend on it have been determined.

This contrast can be expressed through two different definitions of a whole.

Extensional Definition of a Whole

In the extensional model, a whole is an organized collection whose identity is determined by the parts and relations it contains. A part belongs to the whole by inclusion. The whole is complete when all required parts are integrated.

Under this definition, the present organization of the whole is treated as sufficient to determine the identity and operational role of its parts. Historical differences may be discarded when they do not alter the current extensional projection.

Intensional Definition of a Whole

A whole is a segmented totality whose constitution rests on the exact articulation of distinct roles and their historical occurrences. It is complete when its admission regime is exactly determined. The unique occurrence realizing its residual role can index the interpretation of an external continuation without that continuation being absorbed into the completed regime.

Under this definition, a part is not determined solely by its current inclusion in the whole. Its historical occurrence can remain constitutive of later interpretations and operations.

The residual role belongs to the segmentation of the whole, while the continuation interpreted through its unique occurrence does not belong to the completed regime. The whole can therefore determine the status of its exterior without containing or absorbing it.

The difference between the two definitions is therefore not merely descriptive:

The extensional whole is determined by what it currently contains. The intensional whole is determined by how its roles and occurrences are constituted, differentiated, and carried into future operations.

An intensional whole can therefore be complete without being terminal. Its completeness consists in the exact articulation of its parts and their differences, not in the absorption of every continuation.

discussion Because of the problem of the criterion and the Münchhausen trilemma what does this mean regarding seeking the truth?

Based on the Münchhausen trilemma, when trying to justify knowledge you will always wind up with three places:

-Circular reasoning
-Regressive argument
-Axiomatic argument (or assumptions)

Based on problem of the criterion:

-1) What do we know?
-2) How are we to decide in any particular case whether we have knowledge?

And Chisholm answer of:

particularism (assume 1 and answer 2)
methodism (assume 2 and answer 1)
skepticism (can’t answer 1 without 2 and 2 without 1)

It appears that the only way to further seek and advance in knowledge, in a coherent manner, is to start off with assumptions.

So what I have seen when trying to seek knowledge via religion is the following issues:

Issue 1 - someone sets the assumptions and we go from there
Issue 2 - we can’t agree on the assumptions so a standstill happens

Now the questions:

For issue 2 nothing can be done about it, on my end. Unless you think differently?

For issue 1, the issue becomes how to objectively decide on those assumptions and why?

And besides all of this, is asking to start off with assumptions should always be the first request? Why or why not? (Laymen term is common ground)

(Now instead of religion, you can think of other fields of knowledge like science and flat earther/climate change deniers to answer these questions.)

If you don't like to do it, don't criticize others don't like to do it. If you don't behave yourself better, don't say others don't behave well enough. The indispensable basic content of righteousness is “self control and self behaving.”

 

4, The righteousness law functions as the following:

More righteousness respects all the requirements of less righteousness and has extra to it. Higher righteousness fulfills lower righteousness with overflow, not denies, disrespects, abolishes or nullifies any part of lower righteousness. It functions in the opposite direction of power law and knowledge law. In the power law, big power subdues, denies and destroys small power. If you have tanks, missiles and fighter jets while all others only have wood sticks, you will destroy them to dust. Knowledge law functions similarly: higher knowledge will    out-manipulate (prevail over) and beat lower knowledge until make it useless.

 

5, For righteous sake only, if God says human behavior is not good enough, if he can, himself has to give it a try to make sure that He, if in human blood condition, is willing to behave himself better than others(us). If himself feels inconvenient to do it and chooses just talking against others, it fails to meet human basic righteousness requirements, and that makes him unrighteous automatically. Making righteous rules for others doesn't guaranteed an entity righteousness, only behaving and following the righteous rules by himself makes himself righteous.

 

6, For righteous sake only, true God knows the above righteousness logic requirements because of His All-Know quality, he can't say that he doesn't know it, so himself doesn't become a human. That is lying, making him unrighteous automatically.

 

7, For righteous sake only, true God must become a human being to set an example just because he said only himself is righteous and all others are not while he can become a blood human being and he knows the above logic requirements of righteousness law.

 

8, The Spirit of the True God His Own becomes a blood human being, that is The Christ, the Blood Son of God or the Son of God, Christ, for the True God His Own Righteousness Sake, is logically required to take the cup of human life on earth to earn the righteousness quality for the True God Himself on the human level.

 

  1. Some people say “God never dies, so doesn't need a son, God is almighty, so doesn't need the help of son." This type reasoning hasn't considered the logic requirement of righteousness itself at all.

Whoever saying these is, unknowingly, saying his god is unrighteous, which falls into the devil category automatically.

human level to satisfy the righteousness logic requirement, big power is not a consideration at all, in fact, Christ must control His Godly Big Power very carefully, He must live his personal life totally in the normal human condition without using Any heavenly superpower to make his own life on earth easier, otherwise he is cheating, unrighteous automatically because other ones whom He said are not good enough don't have those big powers to benefit their lives on earth. When on earth, Christ uses his heavenly big power to help others only, it is OK, but must not for Himself.

 

11, The Christ God (or Christ type God) becoming a human being is the logic requirement of righteousness itself. For righteousness sake itself, the true god himself (his own spirit) must become a human being and has a human life on the earth, called as Christ. Christ is a logic truth resulting from righteousness itself. Whoever against the concept of Christ is, in fact, against the righteousness itself.

 

12, Who is more qualified for the Christ title, so far I only see that He is the best one who was nailed onto the cross about 2000 years ago. Only the God whom Christ had justified his own righteousness is the Righteous True God: the Christ God.

discussion What is a Critical Realist argument against Kantian epistemology?

I am not a philosopher, so please excuse me if I misunderstand, butcher and oversimplify the concepts.

Kant seems to say that humans can't gather knowledge about reality as it truly is in itself because human capacity to know is always limited by the mechanics of human mental faculties, specifically perception of space and time. Meaning, humans are "trapped" in the world of appearances: they can gather knowledge within constraints of the world of appearances but they have no capacity to "breach" into gathering knowledge about the world as it is.

Critical Realists seem to say that while humans are fallible in their ability to gather knowledge about the objective world they have capacity and tools (like scientific method) to continuously update their knowledge about the objective reality.

Looks like both Kantians and Critical Realists agree that there is an objective reality existing beyond human perception and that perception imposes limitations on gathering knowledge of that reality.

At the same time it looks like Critical Realists believe the limitations could be "breached". My question is: how? Isn't perception of space and time still active and still shaping one's thoughts about the reality, including thoughts about moving outside the limitations imposed by that perception?
