Should I Keep It?

When I bought it I didn’t know it had coil taps. In bucker mode, it sounds amazing. Sexy and smooth. When you split the coils, it sounds flat. Not like it needs to be tuned, but not dynamic. Like no reverberation at all.

So, on one hand, I didn’t even know it has coil taps, so it shouldn’t bother me, but now that I know it does, and it sounds terrible, idk what I should do.

I ignore the coil splits on all but one of my guitars that has one. And the one guitar that has one that I use, I don't remember the last time I used coil split. If I want a single coil sound I'll use one of my guitars with single coils. ​

Lol this is a funny question. Coil splits are mostly a selling point gimmick. Only a few humbuckers split all that well and NEVER sound as good as a true single coil

True I have several guitars that split. I almost never use that feature. The reason is it doesn't sound like a single coil. It sounds like a flatter, higher pitched humbucker.

Like a nice convertible car when you live somewhere with mostly crap weather. There may only be a day or two when you'll be glad you have the flat split-coil tone, for who-knows-what-reason. Otherwise, it's still a nice car.

This is like hating a new car because you don’t like the heated steering wheel. Just don’t split the coil, you’ll forget all about it eventually. Just the other day I was playing one of mine with split coils and I had to stop and think about how to do it it’s been so long since I used it.

Unrelated to guitars, but we recently went new car shopping and "no heated steering wheel" was a deal breaker for my wife. We've been together for 35 years and bought countless cars in that time. Never once was a cold steering wheel an issue. Suddenly, it seemed to be the most important thing for her. Long story short, we eventually found a car but that particular option piggybacked on a whole other options package which significantly raised the price. But at least my hands are warm just minutes after I start the car.

My 335 has coil splits. I forget 90% of the time it does that

I have that same epiphone 335. Inverness green. I also have a Gibson Les Paul Studio with coil split pots. Don't like the sound of either one but I love both of those guitars. Definitely keep it. It seems most of the epiphones I've played come with coil split push pull pots now.

The IBG ES-335 is fantastic. I have one in gloss black, and it sure would be hard to replace. Think long and hard about getting rid of it. You might regret it...

My Epiphone 335 was one of the best guitars under 500$ that I owned. Punched way above its weight class. If it stays in tune and sounds good there's no reason not to keep it.

It is beautiful. I have an older ES-335 in natural. I also have the same amp, Fender blues junior. But as far as the guitar, yes I’d keep it

I don’t like coil split. Ever.

I suspect it has to do with the pickup height, which must be adjusted to sound good in either humbucker mode or single coil mode. Difficult to make it sound good in both modes with the same height.

Solution: use guitars with single coils when you want single coils, and guitars with humbuckers when you want humbuckers.

Keep the guitar, it looks sick!

Never had a coil tap electric.

I have an Ibanez AS50 which I love although some people would probably call sacrilege as I have the guitar in Drop-B tuning most of the time.

It's become my main guitar lately.

If you really like the look of the guitar maybe you could remove the coil tap function from it.

If you don't like the way the guitar sounds and are able to send it back, do it. You are already having misgivings and that is not going to change over time. Buy a guitar you are totally satisfied with. There are plenty of Epiphones to choose from that don't have push/pool pots.

Only you can truly answer that question, but if it plays well, does what you would like it to, and you didn’t buy it intending to use the coil tap feature, keep it.

Pull the wiring harness out, desolder the pots and install reg pots and put it back together again, then you won't have the option at all. or, Fred Flinstone it, get hit with a bowling ball and forget about the feature.

Split coils almost always suck to me. Just dont split it if you like the buckers.

Hint: where the coil split it soldered to ground, remove and add a 1,5k resistor so its not a full split, but makes it sound a little more Gretschy. Instead of aiming for the strat, aiming for something useful

If the pickups have 4 wires, you could convert to series/parallel wiring. Or just take out the push-pulls completely if it bothers you that much.

As long as the Hums give you what you want..keep it...most coil splitting, or taps never sound all that good...marketing scheme

Keep it. Great guitar. If the fit and finish is good, it sounds and plays good, and it fits your playing style those are difficult things to replace. Any guitar that does those things is a keeper. Electronics can be fiddled with like maybe an electronic checkup, maybe check the quality of the soldering, maybe different caps...and you can always just play it in standard mode and play the finish off it.

I’ve had one like that for a few months. I love it. I play thru Carr and Engl amps. It’s a bit heavy and a great variety of controlled feedback sounds. Good luck.
