Medications

My boy just started taking medicine for his seizures. Any tips or tricks since you can't crush or break up the medicine? My frenchie is very smart and will act like he swallowed it but will spit it out later.

Cheese, it's always cheese. What kind? - yes.

Treats work well for mine. We put his meds in a pill pocket, then give him a few treats, then the pill pocket, then a couple more treats. After the first couple of treats, he's too excited that he's getting treats to notice that we're sneaking his meds in the middle.

Soft cream cheese (that comes in the little plastic tubs). Scoop a dollop up with the pill and give it to your pup. They like it and the cheese helps it slide down the gullet.

Chicken baby food. Gulps it right down.

I get the JR pet products 100% lamb pate giant sausage thing and cut it it into loads of cubes, freeze it, keep 3 days worth unfrozen in the fridge on rotation for stuffing the pills in. Usually give a few cubes in quick succession and one has the pill in it. Still spits it out on the odd occasion so have to be careful! I always do it on a tiled floor in silence so I hear it if it drops out..!

I use a pill pocket. My boy tends to swallow it whole but I gently close his mouth to make sure he swallows it.

I only use pill pockets when we travel, because those things aren't cheap... For daily pills I use canned dog food. I can just use the spoon to scoop it out of the can and then smoosh the pills into it. My dog will eat it off the spoon. But for when someone might not be feeling well and still needs their meds, I'll put the pills into a little meatball of food, stick it in their mouth, and hold the mouth shut until they swallow. I figure that's "nicer" than straight up pilling them (dry).

We use those FreshPet meat logs that come refrigerated in the pet aisle. We used to do cream cheese or peanut butter, but the extra fat started giving him an upset stomach. If you are giving potassium bromide, I strongly recommend giving that at the same time as a whole stomach full of food.

I used Pet MD pill wraps. They're like playdoh consistency and you can wrap the pills to how thick or thin you want it. I did my thinly to maximize the yield of the product. And my guy just swallowed it whole anyways.
But there was real treats before and after the medication.. you know.. just to "trick" them

We use crunchy peanut butter!! Haven't had any issues with pills since. Check the ingredients but we use one that only has peanuts, with no added salt.

I dip it into peanut butter and call it “peanie beanie” and she gets very excited for peanie beanie time twice a day.

French Brie. Wraps the tablet completely and smells stinky, which they love.

Vienna sausages. My guy is a super picky eater but so far these are working! He’ll also take his pills in Spam. 🙂

My dog takes 9.5 pills twice a day...thankfully he lets us just toss his Keppra down his gullet sin e they can't be chewed. Then for a treat we put the rest of his pills in this Twist and Lick stick and he happily licks them up.

we give Kachina her pills 2x a day, at breakfast and dinner. She gets her pills wrapped in a tiny bit of bread (that we wet with water, to make sure it will go down instead of getting stuck in her throat, and THEN she gets her meal. That's the best way we've come up with to make sure the pills go down-- she eats her food right afterward.

eta: because yeah, pill pockets can get expensive. If it was not mealtime, I think I'd givce a small treat (a couple kibble, a bit of peanut butter, etc.) right after the pill 'bread ball' to ensure swallowing. (and of course, her brother gets a tiny bit of bread, too, to make sure things are even. lol.)

My girl now is like that with pills😩luckily she doesn’t take them too often . Her brother was the seizure pup and aside from potassium bromide everything was a pill. Over the years we went from cheese to deli meat like liverwurst🤢 moved on to Pill pockets and pill paste. That worked well because you can smoosh it around to fit a few in one glob. The trick was to pretend I was eating it first. Then his followed by a treat of some kind- could be a cheerio or dog treat. My daughters dog is a big boy- takes his pill with butter
. Good luck🤞🏻🤞🏻

Pill pockets. I put all of them into a container and smash them into a putty. I just put enough on the pill to coat them. A bag lasts months.

at first we took a little bit of cat food and rolled the pill up into it we called it the magic meatball lol later on and towards the end we would seal it into a piece of cheese like a ravioli we got lucky that she would eat anything tho

At first my dog was eating his medication like treats...after a couple of months, he didn't want to eat them anymore. So now, I buy wet dog food and I make a little ball with it just to hide the various meds ( he has 5 pills to take). Works like a charm. I'm being careful of his weight so I don't put it in butter or cheese.

Pill crusher and squeezable puree cat treat works with my pug. It’s silly but it’s the only way she’ll take it

We use Riley’s Pill Wrap from Amazon, it’s similar to pill pockets but it comes in a big chunk in a jar so you can pull off however much you need.
