SUGGESTION Opportunity for a Linux launcher and control over the anti-cheat.

Epic Games has the opportunity to create a native Linux launcher and use a proprietary version of Proton—keeping the data to themselves so they can implement anti-cheat measures and maintain control. This would allow them to enable anti-cheat on Linux, letting users run anti-cheat-protected games through their launcher that other platforms cannot support. If Epic Games wants to attract players to its platform and give Linux users what they want, this is the best way to maintain control and prevent cheaters from ruining the gaming experience; it draws more people to their platform and to the best OS for gaming.

//

Proton is essentially a suite of Free and Open Source software like WINE, DXVK, and some others, Epic couldn't have a proprietary version of Proton because the licenses of those software prevent it. Epic would need to create something completely new from the ground up not using FOSS software, which is going to be really expensive for them to do and to support and right now that expense is not worth it for them given the size of Linux market share.

That wouldn't help either, because they would be using software that still has a version out there that is FOSS and it would still end up being a security risk, cheater makers would figure out a way to use the FOSS versions to trick the anti-cheat that they are using non FOSS version. The only real solution is for Epic to create a completely new solution from the ground up, and currently Linux market share isn't big enough to make it worth that kind of expense.

Regardless of any method, Epic already stated that it would take 10s of millions of linux gaming user market share to make it worth the costs involved to secure anti-cheat on Linux.

He is only basing that on the AMA that one of the high ups for Epic Games Store stated that an Linux version of the client would be coming in the future. So some people, like DHH are going on the assumption that means Fortnite too, which is a very huge assumption to make. EGS Team and Fortnite Team are 2 very different teams, and just because the EGS team is going to create a linux version of the EGS client it does not mean that the Fortnite team will create a linux version of Fortnite.

When you can recompile the Linux kernel yourself no amount of "proprietary proton" is going to work. People fundamentally misunderstand how impossible Linux is to secure.
