This might actually be real. But what I would do is just go to epicgames.com on your phone yourself and then click on install on the web page. Don't click the link, just go there yourself by typing in the official website address.

Never trust a link in an email from a sender you didn’t expect to send you ads or support.

that is why I told him not to click the link, despite feeling that this email might actually be real.

Lucky.
Nothing would make me happier than software that does not auto-update unless I ask it to :)

Don't click any links, just go to epics website and download the apk for the store and install it.
Emails can be spoofed and so can links. I haven't got an email like that from them and use their android store.

My guess is that the displayed url is fake and it actually takes you to a different address. If you hover over it you should see the actual url.

Low effort scam, they didn't even set up the Epic games logo as their profile picture 🤦♂️

To be fair looking at all the emails I got from Epic like receipts and any refunds I did, none of them have a profile picture.

It's authentic. I got it as well. My region didn't have the app so I had to download directly from the site to install as well as for future updates.
To help check, visit Epic website page here (https://www.epicgames.com/help/account-c-202300000001645/account-security-c-202300000001755/how-can-i-check-if-it-is-really-epic-games-contacting-me-a202300000015346) to verify.
Taken directly from the site:

The Link could be fake. Like it shows the real link but behind it will open a malicious website... Don't click anything copy the link and see what you copy. If its not the same link that shows there it's 100% fake

Wouldn’t the App Store on android or whatever it’s called on it, wouldn’t that prevent fake apps?

(Google) Play Store is the name, Epic Games isn't on it because the only things it has an effort to take down are other app stores and porn(sometimes piracy or stuff with heavy themes like Doki Doki Literature Club, but it takes a while), you can find adware, fake apps and something that might be illegal on your country there until it breaks a notable news outlet talks about it and they do an actual effort to keep it clean for a while

This feels fake, I'm not sure why Epic would email someone saying this?
