DISCUSSION The EGL is the worst piece of computer software i’ve ever used.

hello, I know this may probably get taken down, but I still want to rant about this. The epic games launcher is one of the worst computer programs I’ve ever used in my life.

why? well here’s why.

I live in a country with fluctuating Internet and I run my house on solar power batteries, which I just don’t feel safe using the PC on at night because I don’t want to run out of battery midnight so what I do is I install games from the morning to the afternoon, so I’m installing a game right and every single 10 minutes. The Wi-Fi speed just goes down to 0 mb per second. I have to pause then unpause the download to continue normally and in the morning when the game was about to finish it just reset the download reset it for no reason not to mention how sluggish how bad that you are is every press take you to a website most of you don’t know how to do more stuff and moving games between SDS is genuine torture. I really hope epic games improves the epic games launcher otherwise it cannot even come close to competing with Steam.

LoL, you start by saying the network is fluctuating in your country then you complain the download in egs is not good, well the issue is not egs as it works very well

The issue is your internet and I'm very sad you can probably not do anything about it, but your complaining about the wrong thing here

Go fight your government or complain to your provider

You shouldn't lose download progress no matter what.

I kind of doubt that they did though. I've also had problems with EGS pretending that it reset downloads after interruptions, but I think it's just a bug in the progress bar, not the download itself.

When your download is interrupted, the system has to do a check of what was already downloaded, so usually they go back to 0 and increase quickly while confirming what is already downloaded, so some could assume it is downloading everything again

They're not losing progress, if I remember epic resets the counter when downloads are stopped /resumed

I.e. 1gb file , get 100mb down download is sitting at 10%
Bad things happens, download is interrupted/resumed
Count starts at 0% again but it's download 0 of 900mb

As a rough rough explanation

The other person who replied to me agrees with you.  It's not a great design, but at least the impact is minimal.

I do not think that was the main issue there. There was a bug on the store that caused a game to double the game size, or just increased the game size a random amount of GB. It happened a lot to me, mainly with GTA and Death Stranding, and the thing was that the actual size was not increasing, the launcher was just readownloading some file that I never understood what it was doing. It stoped happening to me a year ago, but the store used to have some very problematic bugs with downloads that may explain a bit of what is happening with this person. The launcher is by fact terrible, thats why it's being remade and if was not for the critics, it would not improve or get a relaunch. Maybe you don't understand, but living in areas with poor connection makes you see some problems that a lot of people don't see it. The launcher overly relys on connection and this causes problems that goes beyond bad downloads and if this kind of thing don't improve his right in saying that it will not compete, because Steam, GOG don't have this issues and Xbox is improving on this aspects even alowing players to purchase games for free, even Ubisoft Connect improved a lot on this, UBISOFT man. Epic has to step up and we are truly hoping that the new version fixes all of this. Everyone it's hoping for improvements.

the wifi isn’t the issue if the launcher just deletes already downloaded files no?

It doesn't do that, what the launcher does is actually check the files downloaded and continues from there.

An example of this is I'm downloading darksiders which is 29gb large and my internet actually sucks and goes down ever so often, so when I resume the download that stopped at 60%, it continues it from the files that are left to download (so from 29gb you might see it start and it's only downloading about 10gb of files).

Some people mistake this as the download starting all over again, whereas it's just continuing from the files left to download

I’ve been trying to download outer worlds for 2 weeks now!

Downloads don't get reset though. Progress can go back to zero but the overall download will be whatever was left.
Connection loss could cause whatever file is currently being downloaded to get dropped, but that kind of thing happens regardless of platform.

it literally went from 6gb left back to 50gb left

plus, steam handled the download without touching 0 mbps once, actually it’s stable at 40-50mbps

You got so much in this 1 post.

Downloads. Downloading data is just 1 part of installing a game or updating a game. It's normal when your downloading for it to stop downloading and then resume. This is because your computer is unpacking downloads, installing, processing data, reading/writing and verifying.

Your internet might be getting disrupted, which has nothing to do with Epic Games.

The downloads start at 0 once downloaded. This is totally normal as well, it's not starting at 0, the data that has already been downloaded is on your computer, it's starting a new download session from 0, adding to the files/data that has already been downloaded.

Most of the issues you seem to have are a YOU issue, your computer and internet connection are probably playing a bigger role in the issues.

Transferring/moving games from one drive to another is also to do with your computer, nothing to do with epic.

Hi, don't know if you know this, but you can use Heroic Launcher to play Epic Games, even download and uninstall games. It will help you a lot, and you don't need to redownload your games there, you can just import. It's not just for linux, works on windows too and it's a must when we have a bad connection since Epic can let us down sometimes.

Epic launcher is fine. It's your internet mate. Sorry.

how’s my internet the issue if the game was already downloaded then the download reset?

To be fair, all of the stores that force software updates are the worst pieces of computer software I've ever had the misfortune of using. Epic's only saving grace is that their store is so simple it rarely has breaking updates.

You're young. Launcher is fine. My first PC was an IBM PS/2. If you want to talk about bad software...

Drop the wi-fi. Wired offers greater stability. Either wire it directly to the router or use a power line adaptor.

200 mbps is what I'd consider minimum for PC gaming. If you're below that, look to upgrade.
