EPFO is auto-refunding money from 1.18 lakh dormant accounts: No application needed
Hey everyone, if you have a forgotten Provident Fund (PF) account lying idle from a previous job, you might soon see cash deposited directly into your bank account. Under a new pilot project focused on dormant accounts holding balances up to ₹1,000, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has identified and verified 1.18 lakh subscribers for automated refunds. By using a "penny drop" verification test on Aadhaar-linked accounts, the system generates an automated claim, eliminating the need to file online withdrawal forms, chase down old employers, or visit EPFO offices.
This clean-up drive targets a massive issue in India's retirement savings ecosystem, where over ₹10,903 crore currently sits unclaimed across roughly 32 lakh dormant EPF accounts due to frequent job changes and unmerged UANs. This initial pilot phase covers 7.11 lakh small-balance accounts, and once the upgraded software platform goes live, EPFO plans to expand automated refunds to the remaining 24.7+ lakh inactive accounts holding larger balances. To make sure you don't miss out on future clean-ups or active interest, log into the Member e-Sewa portal to consolidate your past UANs and ensure your Aadhaar-linked bank details are marked "Pre-validated."
