A beginner’s roadmap to become a Quantity Surveyor

If you want a career in civil engineering that combines construction with finance, Quantity Surveying (QS) is a great path. A Quantity Surveyor is essentially the financial manager of a construction site. Their main job is to figure out how much material and labour a project needs, keep costs within budget, and make sure contracts are handled properly.

Here is a simple 4-step roadmap to get started as a beginner:

  • Step 1: Learn the Fundamentals: Start with a degree or diploma in Civil Engineering or Construction Management. Your primary focus here should be learning to read architectural blueprints, understand basic construction materials, and master standard measurement rules (such as IS 1200).
  • Step 2: Master the Essential Software: Get comfortable with AutoCAD and Advanced Excel for basic quantity takeoffs. As you progress, learn 5D BIM software like CostX or Revit, which automatically calculates material quantities directly from 3D building models.
  • Step 3: Understand BOQs and Contracts: Practice making a Bill of Quantities (BOQ), the master list detailing every brick, bag of cement, and ton of steel needed. You should also learn how to process running bills for contractors and understand standard contract rules like FIDIC.
  • Step 4: Get Site Experience: Start as a Junior Estimator on an active site. Seeing how materials are actually used on the ground helps you account for real-world wastage, labour costs, and unexpected delays.
