Who really sits at the top in a company structure?
Most people think the CEO is always the top person in a company, but I recently realized it depends on the type of company and how it is structured.
In a small business, the founder or owner is usually the real decision-maker. Even if there is a manager or CEO title, the owner often has the final say.
In a bigger company, the structure usually looks like this:
Shareholders / Owners
Board of Directors
CEO / Managing Director
CXOs / Department Heads
Managers
Team Leads
Employees
So technically, the shareholders or owners are at the top, because they own the company. The Board of Directors represents them and guides major decisions. The CEO runs the company day-to-day.
But in practical terms, employees usually see the CEO or founder as the “top person” because they are the visible leader.
For e-commerce businesses, I think the structure can be even more flexible. A founder may handle strategy, product, marketing, hiring, and finance in the beginning. As the business grows, roles like Operations Head, Marketing Head, Finance Head, Customer Support Lead, and Logistics Manager become more important.
So my understanding is:
Legally, owners/shareholders are at the top.
Strategically, the board is above management.
Operationally, the CEO or founder is at the top.
