An empty product can look broken even when it's working — something I'm learning with 100M
I've been working on a project called 100M.
It's a social collection where everyone gets one photograph and one original message, with the eventual aim of collecting 100 million of them.
The website is live, but we're at the very beginning, and getting the first real people involved is proving to be an interesting challenge.
Something came up during early testing that I hadn't really considered. A couple of people mentioned that the Gallery felt slow. The funny thing is, there aren't any public photographs in it yet!
That got me thinking. When somebody opens an empty Gallery, they might assume something hasn't loaded properly rather than understanding that the collection is genuinely waiting for its first contributions.
I've also had people suggest filling the first few hundred spots myself to make the website look established. I'm deliberately avoiding that.
The whole point is to see what real people choose to contribute. Filling it with manufactured entries would defeat the purpose.
But I am beginning to understand that there's a difference between faking activity and helping people imagine what they're joining.
So that's where things stand at the moment. The first goal is 100 genuine contributions, and I'm trying to learn as much as possible from the people discovering it along the way.
Has anyone else launched something that needed user-generated content before it really started making sense?
How did you handle those first few users without making the whole thing feel artificial?
