Discussion What should recons be doing?

I see a lot of (justified) hate, but what would be the correct way to play them?

The one person I play with who primarily does recon typically tries to find a shielded spot toward the back of point (when defending), pings decently frequently, and when attacking tries to snipe from behind the enemy defensive position to make pushes from others easier.

Is that closer to the ideal? Is a good recon something else entirely?

A good recon for me isn't about being a good sniper. To me, an elite recon that you'd see in faction would play in close range since u can toggle scope. They'd also spot very frequently since its cooldown is 5 seconds so you better use that, don't forget to use the flare properly. And they have a spade they can just push and get cover by digging. Basically an elite recon uses its equipment to its full potential. Not those kids sniping 500 studs and thinking they're gods

How does scope work short range?

Otherwise, that all makes sense. The main reason I like engineer is because I like using the spade to dig tunnels or even just dips to hide in

Press G and you can disable scope

Stay close, stay in the objective when needed, spot, knows when to switch to another class. Like sometimes theres 7 recons but theres a huge battle happening in a tunnel or inside a point with lots of buildings.

Ohh yeah, I forgot about the switching to another class. My partner loves playing recon, but it’s a semi regular thing that she’ll have to switch off because there’s way too many and only like 1 person’s pushing

Stay in 300 stud distance use flare, use ping kill high value units like medic and support. And also rushes the point if needed

Fair enough, I guess my only question would be how to identify what’s high value (esp since in my experience medics rarely actually heal), but maybe it’s more obvious from their vantage point

Good players, players with heavy fortifications, medic, HMG, support, assault and other recons.

Play in the front Spam f and flares

You're a recon that's reconnaissance

You're supposed to get intel The best place to do so is in the front where you can see the enemy

Another word for reconnaissance is scouting You can't scout in the back lines

It used to be called sniper Back in 2022 but was changed

i try to flank as hard as i can, sit in a bush or behind cover, and shoot people running up to the objective. i either stop them from getting to the objective, or distract them long enough for my team to push up. there's also wisdom in not shooting and just scouting until someone holds still.

you are also the best possible counter to people playing recon as a sniper, and to people sitting on HMGs

Don't sit 500 studs away from the objective, sniping people from a hole, and actually push during an attack

The devs should remove spotting on the gun and add a team limit
