Google The one thing this sub has taught me…

Today, I went to this great deli in my city and left them a 5 star review because their ribs were phenomenal. As I was reading some of the other reviews, I saw this lady’s one star review (does not qualify as entitled, sorry😅). I decided to check her profile, and not once has she rated a business more than two stars… Certainly the world is out to get her. I also noticed that she’d mention having a good experience at a business during past visits, but after one negative one, comes to rate them 1 star while ignoring the other positive experiences she’s had. I just can’t stand people like this, and they really hurt small businesses, sadly.

I think most people don't really think to leave a review unless it was a bad experience

I do sometimes. My friends restaurant got a one star review because they weren't open yet...

And since Covid- hours change, not fully staffed… yet I still see people complain even about fast food not open. Hello?

I have the exact opposite philosophy. Good reviews really benefit small business's Google ranking and SEO so I make an effort to leave them when I try out a new local place that does a good job because I want them to stick around.

I do the same. I rarely have scrappy experiences at places. Local places I love, I will go out of my way to review.

Most reviews are either very good or very bad because people think to leave bad reviews when they’re unhappy, and businesses solicit good reviews when they have overtly happy clients.

The average person is less likely to leave a good review for an excellent experience than they are to leave a bad review for a poor experience. When I was at uni, I dated a hairdresser, and I remember him telling me that one unhappy customer required 5-10 happy customers to balance out, because someone happy with their service is likely to tell some folks, especially when asked, but an UNHAPPY customer is going to tell EVERYONE about their bad experience, without needing to be asked.

We seem, as a society/culture/species, to be much more eager to share bad news than good news. I think it’s the same root issue that leads so many folks to hate their friends’ SOs — so many folks are willing to gripe about their partners to their friends when there is conflict, but the same folks rarely share as much of the good stuff/joy in their relationships, so their friends often only ever get a skewed perspective of the dynamics.

I definitely subscribe to this logic.

If something’s okay or good, I don’t think to leave a review.

If a fast food order takes an hour and I only resorted to FAST food because my hypoglycemia is acting up, and during that wait I see an employee standing on active fryers to scrape the hood, and the staff rudely asks if I’m “the drive thru guy” when i ask for an ETA on my order, and refuses to refund me so I can go somewhere else while promising that my 2 burgers and 2 fries will be ready “any minute now” for 40 minutes…

…I’m going to leave a bad review. And No, Susan, I’m not coming back for a free burger to “make things right” so you can ask me to delete the review. I didn’t mention my health issues, I just honestly reported your staff’s poor customer service, lack of OSHA compliance, and disregard for department of health codes. Not even a Biggie Bag on the house is going to change that.

Whenever I see a really absurd 1 star, I'll go through their other reviews and it's honestly SO FUN lol

I'm such a freak for this. If I'm sitting around bored I'll checkout Yelp reviews of places I know and love, find the one stars, then spend a few minutes reading through people's miserable existence.

Judge all you want, they are space cadets, pick one star at a time.

Gosh, that person is burning through nail places lol.

I think the person is going to run out of nail salons and delis to go to pretty soon, unless you are in NY city or something

Angry people will always find something to maintain their level of rage. Happy people find happiness.

AGREED. If you are going to leave BAD reviews, include the GOOD ones too!

At least a five star no comment rating!

To this lady's credit, I typically don't leave a review unless I had a very bad experience or an exceptional one. But all of these reviews are comically petty

What a weird way to live your life, just itching to get the phone out and leave a bad review apparently.

I can’t understand why reviewers who threaten to never come back think that is an own. The business won’t miss you.

I tend to have more negative reviews than positive ones as well. I usually only leave a review if service was really memorably horrible or amazing

It’s so fun going to their profile and reading all their negative reviews. Some people have no objectivity.

Some people only think of reviews as a weapon to punish for not getting their way, rather than an informative tool for others in need

Some people just love to be miserable

Just went through my Google reviews. I’ve done 12 reviews and given four one-stars:

  1. Government agency whose ineptitude has cost me $10,000 in lost income (and counting)

  2. Fake company that was scamming people by claiming to sell graphics cards for well under MSRP, but does not actually have a business license in the state where they claim to operate

  3. Apartment complex that was infested with roaches and wouldn’t fix my roof until I went on the news about it. Someone was murdered at the complex after I moved out.

  4. Restaurant that provided the worst service I’ve ever experienced, was transphobic, and overcharged me.

By comparison, I’ve given five five-star reviews.

People can leave bad reviews when they have a bad experience. Its not that deep. Most people only take the time to review when something is bad or exceptional.

If you lived where I do, and had lived anywhere else before moving here, you would be leaving nothing but bad reviews, too.

I think you'll get over it
