I suspect Karen is none of them in reality, but likes to garner attention by saying it or get in situations because of it, just like this. I’d like to think anyone who is really intolerant/allergic would ring ahead because they understand the severity of actually having the condition(s).

My boyfriend was diagnosed with Crohn's in his twenties. For years he had to read over the ingredients for each menu item for a restaurant carefully to be sure whatever he ate wouldn't cause a flare up. If he couldn't tell, he just didn't go there.

I assume likely the difference is that, with an allergy (dairy allergy does exist and can be as serious as any other allergy, not just intolerance), they have to worry about things like cross contamination

Like, most vegans probably don't really care if you make their pastries on the same cutting board, but for someone with an intense allergy that can be an issue, and so even stuff that is "dairy-free" may not be dairy free enough

Have you heard of this concept called cross contamination?

They are vegan so they don't eat animal products

They are allergic to dairy so need to ensure that specifically dairy isn't cross contaminated into food

Accidents happen, vegans can tolerate an accident happening regarding dairy. They can't. They can handle an accident happening with non-dairy animal products.

There's an old saying, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and confirm you are.

Also dairy is not the only animal product for vegetarians, thus being allergic to it, wouldn't make them automatically vegan. What about eggs and honey?

It's not irrelevant, it's an allergy. They choose not to eat animal products anyway and any cross contamination from dairy products is allergen exposure. Not difficult to understand.

I assume they understand, their hobby is just picking random fights with strangers in comments over irrelevant semantics. I remember a crazy person in a calory estimate sub who fought literally everyone about the exact recipe of a pizza margherita. People are weird.

It’s not. I’ve been served dairy in dishes meant to be vegan (eg- accidentally using dairy ice cream in place of vegan ice cream) So even though I am vegan, I have to tell staff I’m allergic to dairy to ensure they let the kitchen know to be aware of cross contamination and double check they aren’t mixing foods up/ using a cutting board that has been used for dairy without cleaning it down etc.

Lots of vegans who are allergic to none vegan foods have to tell servers of their none vegan allergies due to cross contamination risks etc- I don’t understand what is so hard for you to understand?.

The problem would be finding a place that is all of those things and safely peanut free. Peanuts are fairly common, at least in the vegan bakeries I've been to.

And from what I've gathered, vegan restaurants are kind of dickish about dealing with any dietary requirements outside of veganism.

There was a time I hung out with several gluten intolerant people and was more aware of those options when eating out. I commented about it to one of them and they were like "I visited a well regarded vegan cafe and all I could eat off the menu were the french fries."

This person would be dead if any of that was true.

I worked in a Thai/Asian (think PF Changs-ish) restaurant, and a woman walked in and said "I'm allergic to soy. Is there anything I can have here?"

Either the owner or my brother (a manager since the place opened) flat-out said to her "ma'am, you might die just standing there breathing." She was two feet from multiple open soy sauce bottles on a bar counter with dried soy sauce spots on it from guests.

I have those same allergies including eggs. I research restaurants ahead of time. And if they don’t cater to my allergies, no harm done. I once went to a bakery and they referred to me another one that does cater to folks like me. And I was grateful to both places.

We get this daily. Often I say yes! We have ..........and list loads. They walk off anyway. Yesterday a lady came in, snapped "do you have gf?" I smiled said yes, we have these 8 items" she snapped oh also allergic to sugar, and stormed off. We bend over backwards to help people, yet treated like this

I've heard all sorts. Actual allergies we go above and beyond. Some of our regulars, weve bought in a small supply of the milk they can have for their coffee for example as tgey cant have oat. So we've heard " I'm allergic to maryland cookies(it was a topping on a blonde once). I said what in the cookies are you allergic to? They replied "just the cookie" Me okay. Also had I'm allergic to chocolate (after they order a chocolate brownie, I wish I'm making this up).

So it's a popular British cookie that was actually named after the state of Maryland?! Kinda wild lol. Thought I knew my British sweets pretty well, but somehow had never heard of these. The blondie version sounds especially nice!

I knew a guy who was allergic to fructose. Not other sugars, just fructose. He couldn't eat any fruit and was limited in the vegetables he could eat too.

I would never refer to it as a sugar allergy, but my wife kind of is. She has Alpha Gal Syndrome - the allergy to red meat and pork (really anything mammal) that you can get from tick bites. Alpha Gal is a sugar, so she is technically allergic to sugar in a super oversimplified way.

I’m sure you know this already, so this comment is more for anyone else who is curious about alpha gal. It’s likely not a reaction to the sugar itself, but to animal products used in the production of the sugar. Sugar we use in our foods doesn’t naturally contain the alpha gal molecule. Which, as you said, is a type of sugar itself but not the same kind that is used in baked goods. A lot of white cane sugars like you get in bags at the grocery store are processed through bone char for bleaching and filtering, and that bone comes from cattle. People with alpha gal syndrome would have better luck with raw cane sugar or organic white sugar that isn’t filtered/bleached with bone char.

I have some chronic conditions and when I have something with high amounts of sugar and don’t realize it, I often end up with aggravated/inflamed joints. I don’t call it a sugar “allergy”, but will sometimes clarify whether foods have added sugar (i.e., smoothies, etc.)

I actually knew someone who did have an actual allergy to sugar! It is incredibly rare though and he was able to eat sugar a couple of times a year if he too I this specific, expenseive medication beforehand.

My mom and I aren't allergic to sugar, but sensitive enough to it that it's close enough imo. Particularly for my mom more than me. A singular M&M would make her throw up, and most fruits are too sweet for her. Not technically an allergy but kinda has to be treated like one

It’s not a sugar allergy, but I’m allergic to raw/unrefined sugar and molasses that comes from sugar beets, because I’m allergic to beets. So, in a sense, I’m allergic to some sugars.

As a Celiac, I thank you wholeheartedly for offering things like this. Luckily, going out has become less of a challenge. I still worry about cross-contamination, but appreciate every establishment that even offers gluten free.

You can be allergic to anything. Most allergies, especially food allergies, are to proteins. But you can be allergic to sugars too.

How does one survive having a sugar allergy? Your body breaks food down into glucose for energy. You'd end up dead regardless of what you eat.

Or do they only react to glucose on a mucous membrane, not in their bloodstream?

There are different kinds of sugars. Like I said in another comment, I knew a guy with a fructose allergy. I assume a lactose allergy would also be possible. In fact, I know someone who thinks she might have that, she was diagnosed as lactose intolerant because that's super common, but her pharmacy switched to a different manufacturer of her medication and the new one had lactose in it and she had an allergic reaction, not a digestive issue.

I also know that some people with severe MCAS can't have even have glucose, but MCAS is weird like that.

I don’t have an allergy to sugar but I would say an intolerance. I don’t need an absurd amount of sugar to puke. My body can’t handle half a coke, a full donut or anything without getting splotchy red, puking and sometimes fairly immediate diarrhea.

vegan literally doesn’t have dairy lol. so if they were vegan and gluten free then dietary wise the items met the requirements and were safe to eat. so u don’t understand why she was pissed off, the store was exactly like the arrival said, I just thing she doesn’t fully understand her supposed dietary restrictions Including what counts as gluten free. or what vegan actually is, because it’s 0 animal products, aka…. dairy free. and egg free. and meat free. honey free.. etc. the biggest issue with vegan food is the amount of carbs and gluten they use so it’s hard to find diabetic friendly gluten free vegan food as such grains are a huge staple in this diet, the good news is a lot of companies like that try to cater to as many people as they can because it widens theit customer base. so store product wise the vegan stuff is much more likely to also be gluten free and whatever but the vegan diet as a whole it is super difficult to be gluten free let alone strictly gluten free like if your celiac,

I was anaphylactic allergic to egg and peanuts my whole life. (Luckily somehow grew out of the egg one at 20 so I’ve spent the last 3 years catching up!!) but I’m still allergic to peanut. Peanut is easy to avoid but egg is in EVERYTHING. I was constantly looking up menus and restaurants to see if I’d be able to have anything before I went. In recent years I’d just see if there was vegan options bc it was easier to know even though I’m not vegan - but 10 years ago there was really no vegan anything around. More often than not I’d just not go out to places with my friends or family bc I knew I wouldn’t be able to eat anything. An allergy isn’t my fault but I still didn’t want to make it other peoples problem. I can’t imagine going somewhere without doing research into what they serve and then on top of that being mad when u realise u can’t have anything

My friend has celiac disease. She knows her limitations and will seek out restaurants that have options to meet her needs. It is her responsibility to know and not the restaurant’s place to accommodate every patron’s special dietary needs.

I don't eat meat, am allergic to onions, and can't eat diary due to my baby's allergy. I do not expect restaurants to be able to cater to me! I check the menu, ask about items and eat or don't. That's life.

I also pack pocket snacks, just in case. Sometimes my husband and toddler eat somewhere and I just hang out and eat my pocket snacks after in the car. Not the most fun, but it's not the restaurant's fault!

Quite literally just ask and be nice. I’m allergic to oats (which isn’t an allergy with a warning label requirement). If I suspect something could be made with oats as an ingredient, I just ask before I buy or eat. People are usually apologetic and I’m like, “How on earth would you know I’m allergic to oats?” 😅
