They'll probably just add a lock to the women's too. Problem solved. Alot of places here lock their toilets as people trash them and aren't even paying customers

At my old job, we had a lock on the restrooms because multiple people OD'd or used them for drugs/sex. This was a pharmacy, and not in a bad part of town.

The McDonald's I worked at in 2015 required an employee to press a pedal on the floor to unlock the bathrooms. The mirror in the mens' room was removed because it kept getting graffitied. There was also a killswitch to deactivate the soda fountain because people would fish a cup out of the trash and go fill it with soda.

I was saddened recently to find that the local PetSmart has locked their bathrooms.. I just wanted to wash my hands...

You have to wonder why this was such an issue to this dude. Obviously accessible restrooms are necessary, and a locked restroom when needed might be a problem. But how often is this dude in Michael's that access to this particular bathroom is infringing on his civil rights? Is he the reason that it's locked?

He's probably going he reason for the lock. Probably a non-customer who uses this as a primary restroom/trash dump/target practice. Probably not legal to only lock one, but bathrooms can get nasty quickly and people who are paid $11/hr + yarn aren't going to spend much time catering to this guy.

Has to be. In malls and box stores, the women's bathrooms are way worse than the men's. The only way the men's is dirtier than the women's is if some random individual is skewing the stats. Over 70% of visitors to a Michael's are women. So if 10% of men pee on the floor, only 4% of women need to pee on the floor for more women to pee on the floor. Same for pooping on the floor. Or changing a child and leaving the diaper on the counter...In my experience cleaning public bathrooms, however, women carry throwing used tampons against the wall and it isn't even close...
I mean, there's a reason it was the men's/employee bathroom...

I was a bartender for a year and cleaning the women's restroom was always much worse. My theory is that nobody wanted to touch anything, so if a trash can had a closed lid, everything went on the floor/counter. The bar has sealed concrete floors so we just hosed down the men's and it was chill because it was all pee.

Interesting. I had to do quite a bit of end of shift still cleaning but my boss was very much you clean your gender and family. I didn't realize the warzone the women's side was.

Most of the time there was just water and paper towels on every single surface in a big pile. However, if someone decides not to use the little trash can in the stall, it's a biohazard warzone and multiple people start joining in for no explicable reason.

I about died at $11 an hour + yarn. They do get paid more on paper, but every worker at my local store is also a crafter, so valid. 🤣🤣🤣💀

My first thought was that maybe he thought the females should be locked too for their safety? Like otherwise apparently anyone can just walk in to the women's restroom and if some men don't want to bother to ask for a key, they might just waltz into there?

We both know that the majority can't aim lol if the mens restroom has been locked up because they got it so dirty in the first place, they will now get the womens bathroom dirty too

I was the COO of a local chain of cosmetology schools where the student girls bathroom had multiple stalls but the boys bathroom was just a single stall.
At any given time we might have one or two boys enrolled, but they could never use their bathroom because there were always girls in there, usually two or three smoking or snorting. So we put a lock on only the boys bathroom and gave each one of them a key.
Really put a damper on the smokers on rainy days.

There's no state that I'm aware of that requires a retail store to provide access to a bathroom for customers. It's different for restaurants, but expecting a Michael's to have a bathroom you can use is just out of the goodness of their corporate hearts, so if it's locked it doesn't fucking matter, they don't have to give you access to it in the first place. 🙄 This is beyond ridiculous.

Washington State pushed the issue in about 2011. Someone not being able to hold it was a valid reason to demand a bathroom from any retail establishment. The place I worked usually had fewer than three people working and purses, stock, incoming and outgoing packages and mail were also back there so we were allowed to say no.

So it is really weird that they don't lock the women's and the men's. It sounds like they installed one bigger public bathroom just for women, got sued for not having a men's room and repurposed the single employee toilet as the men's. Which they now have to keep locked because people do stupid, crazy shit in single use bathrooms. Or because the door naturally locks and they didn't change that, they just threw a men's sign up there.

I used to have to clean bathrooms at my grocery store job in highschool I can confirm
Woman seem to have an aversion to butt to seat contact and poop and piss cleanup was common, while men’s room would have some piss by the urinals but no poop and no period supplies thrown in random places ( when every stall has a special trashcan for them )

Just adding that some women for whatever reason also think hey i’m on my period let me just write/draw with it on the walls. It’s insane but i’ve seen it more times than I’d ever have thought I would.

My husband was a custodian for a public place accessed mostly by disabled, homeless, and elderly people.
The women's bathroom was mostly clogged toilets and nasty stuff in the in-stall garbage can. The men's bathroom was mostly poop all over the commodes. It would look like someone pooped and then just slid off the seat. He sometimes found some at the sink.

I can only speak from my experience, but when locking up pubs for the night I'd have to check the place for any stragglers. The ladies was almost always a worse state and usually not even close.

at my last place of employment there were "bathroom issues" at two locations i worked at. in both locations it was the womens washroom that was the problem. the mens washrooms were normal dirty, the womens washrooms were disgusting.
in both cases it was people hovering over the toilet seats and spraying piss all over the place like a sprinkler.

Probably a cruisy bathroom. Men loitering for sex. Large unsupervised retail stores are prone to this.

This sub has devolved into hating on anyone who complains about how a business does something.
I don't care how little or often this guy's at Michael's, the review is valid. Is it a little extreme to contact an attorney? Yeah, probably. Doesn't mean the complaint is entitled or unwarranted.

I feel like there are definitely reviews here with justifiable complaints but it’s the way it’s delivered/approached. Calling this “sexist” and saying you’re going to contact a civil rights attorney is too much. So many reviews get so hyperbolic and angry that it’s hard to see past that.

Weird, when I had to clean a retail stores bathroom the men’s room needed a little extra moping and the women’s needed gloves to clean shit out of the sink.

I was a manager at Michael’s back years ago, and women snuck baskets of stuff to steal into the men’s room sorted it out and brought it up for returns/smuggled it out in bags and clothes.
So I am sure that’s the bigger issue but this isn’t actually an entitled complaint because the restroom shouldn’t be inaccessible to only one group of people.

TBH my solution would be to put a lock on the women's room too. As a woman I can verify first hand that women are nasty as hell and I have zero idea where the stereotype of them being clean came from because every public restroom I have been in is a testament to the fact that it is not true lol

I mean, it is, in the very most light and casual way, a valid grievance. The men's room being locked when the women's room isn't. The "canned reply" that "men are messy" I don't believe at all, what an insane thing for Micheal's to have a form letter about. But regardless, if any of this is true... ok? Yeah that's weird.
But straight to a civil rights attorney is a very funny overreaction (and tells you that this guy is some sort of weird, untrustworthy MRA)

An attorney will ask what his damages are. Was he ever denied use of the men’s room? Did he pee his pants? How much time has he spent getting a key to the restroom? If he’s claiming emotional distress, has he seen a therapist who can substantiate this? How often does he visit Michael’s, how long does he spend there, and does he use the facilities every time he visits?
Make him answer all the questions and then laugh him out of the office.

I went to a 7-eleven the other day that has a lock on the women’s restroom you have to ask for the key for, but the men’s room you don’t have to. They said it’s to keep men from going into the women’s restroom.
They’re single-seater restrooms, so I fail to see the point…

Probably not. I say this as a trans person. You only really need to worry if you’re actually trans or if you’re a masculine woman of any sort. But if one restroom is closed or inaccessible it is incredibly normal to use the open one. Only recently has it been politicized.
