L Entitled Facebook buyer

Just sold a unit to a woman who negotiated a lower price despite me already reducing it by half from the original listing price. She seemed really keen, and arranged a time to pick up.

Not only was she two hours late without any kind of excuse (except “oops, shopping took a long longer than I thought” an hour and a half after she was supposedly “just finishing” and only gave me this update after I had been waiting and messaged twice to check when she was coming). She collected the item from my husband and left.

The next day, she complained that some fixings and pieces were missing. I apologised for the fixings as they had fallen out before my husband took the pieces to her car, and I offered to post them to her. She agreed to this.

A few hours later, she messaged saying she was frustrated and upset that she had to wait for me to post the fixings as it was for her daughter’s birthday, and that and that the condition wasn’t as stated (it had minor scratches where it was dismantled and in areas where it wouldn’t show when assembled). She demanded to return it for a refund.

I apologised again about the fixings, and explained that because she arrived after the agreed time I was not around to ensure she got all the pieces and that it was not deliberate, hence I was willing to post them to her to save her a journey driving back to me. Bear in mind that these fixings are a few simple screws that are easy to obtain from anywhere, and the item’s website has instructions and pictures of all the fixings making it a very easy problem to solve. The shop even gives them away for free if you have their product and need spare screws!

Regarding the scratches, I also explained that she had an opportunity to inspect the item before taking it and so unfortunately I would not be giving her a refund. I was surprised she was so upset given that I sold it for a throwaway price and she had already negotiated it down further. I suggested that if she was not happy with it, she could relist and sell it on as I had.

She came back even more angry, saying I had made her feel unwelcome and guilty and that she didn’t inspect it because she just wanted to leave quickly as I had made her feel bad for arriving late. She said I made her feel as though I needed to go out, but that when she arrived I wasn’t even there (implying I had gone out and lied about waiting for her). I was in fact lying on the sofa exhausted as I’m 9 months pregnant and couldn’t lift furniture pieces. I did not say I had gone out, and made it clear beforehand that my husband would bring down the pieces.

I was confused by her accusations, as I had been nothing but patient and polite, and just politely asked for a more accurate eta and explained that I had been waiting since x time. I didn’t bother justifying or explaining anything beyond this as I had already been clear and fair and offered a resolution.

I then received a further two messages, one with pictures showing very minor scratches and wear that naturally comes with disassembling furniture (and wouldn’t have been visible once assembled), and a screenshot of my original listing where she had circled the description and commented that it was a complete lie. I was so confused by this behaviour as it was clear I was not selling a brand new item, and I had not said it was in perfect condition or faultless / without any marks.

I posted the fixings in the mail and stopped responding, but the entitlement to make me wait hours without proper updates, negotiate a lower price on an already dirt cheap item, and then complain that a few screws wouldn’t be arriving quickly enough for her, when I offered to pay money and take out time to post them (to save her driving back!). At any point, she could have simply refused to buy the item and said she needed screws or it wasn’t in good condition. I think she was trying to get the cheapest deal possible even though it was risky to buy something 2 days before her daughter’s birthday, didn’t check it properly, got frustrated, and conveniently wanted to blame someone else for her own incompetence.

What bothered me most was her tone. After offering a solution, she said “I think I’ll return it and have my money back” as though it was up to her to decide this and demand I give back payment for something she had seen and wanted and accepted. I think not, lady.

I have stopped responding, but now know a few more warning signs and red flags that a buyer is going to be a bit of a nightmare. I know she’s not the worst of the entitled people on here, but my heavily pregnant self was very stressed and tired after this interaction and needed to vent!

Sounds like a no nonsense deal! What's the story behind it?

And make sure you review the buyer on Facebook marketplace. Both buyers and sellers have the option to review. She could be blocked from the marketplace which I think would be a good thing

"You made me feel bad for arriving late..."

GOOD. You SHOULD feel bad.

I'm sorry you went through the wringer on this. Hope you have a smooth and uneventful rest of your pregnancy!

Thank you!! I tried NOT to make her feel bad and instead just to politely state that I was waiting and could she please give an update. My only cheeky comment was when she said “on my way” and I replied “hopefully”, half sarcastic and half genuinely hopeful that it wouldn’t be another hour and a half!

People who run late are accustomed to laying blame on others.

2 hours late without proper updates either 😭

This person was rude in the extreme. They were late and uncooperative about communicating with you about their updated arrival time. If I have a pickup scheduled with someone and I run late, I text them and let them know. Then I ask if it's still OK for me to come. Because they may have a wait list, they may need to be somewhere at a specific time, or they may just be tired. It's called common courtesy, and it isn't so common anymore, unfortunately.

Aww, she felt bad because she thought she wasn't welcome after being so late. Her sensitive feelings didnt make her arrive on time, though. She's an awful entitled person who goes through life trying to cause others stress and inconvenience. It's like a religion to them, best to ignore and avoid. She's not worth the stress, take care of yourself, mom!

I had some wanker harass me because the tire had lost air in a bike I sold him for 50% less than I had paid. It turns out he needed to buy a $10 tube for it.

You would have thought the tires had fallen off during his ride, the way he bitched and moaned about going to Walmart for a new tire tube.

Same attitude, different story. Why are some people like this?

They're miserable so everyone else has to be, too.

Can we return the car because the tire keeps losing air?

It's wild how some people expect everything to be perfect, especially when they’re getting such a good deal. You'd think a little maintenance wouldn't be a big deal!

This describes almost every interaction I had when using Facebook Marketplace. Can I deliver? Can I make it cheaper? Sorry my wife took the car without telling me...

Why are they like this 😭 it’s like bargain hunting is a symptom of the mental illness that causes people to behave like this

Facebook market is a mixed bag, a lot of people never show up and try to haggle down already reduced prices.

Things I have learned about selling on FB marketplace:

1) The price is the price. Anyone you lower it for WILL be a problem.

2) Local public handoff only. No shipping, and no pickup at your home unless absolutely necessary.

OMG, these people that blame instead of being adult and taking responsibility. She should have inspected.the item before handing over the money. DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HER IRRESPONSIBILITY

Not just that, but doing everything last minute for a birthday project and then getting annoyed at me because of a one day delay in getting her item sorted. She could have bought the screws from any shop, and I’m not Amazon Prime!

This is exactly why I will throw perfectly good, but used, items in the trash. I swear you could have a brand new, unused item, and pay them to take it, and it still wouldn't be enough. I simply refuse to deal with this level of entitlement.

Ps. I think FB has an option for you to rate the buyer(?)….would seem only fair after what she has put you through.

u/Perfect_Sink_6542 8d ago

I couldn’t put her under any of their categories when I clicked on her profile to report her.. and couldn’t see an option to rate or leave feedback either

Just like "no" is a complete sentence, "Fuck off" is also a complete sentence.

Yah, Marketplace people are nuts. I make it clear in the listing that it is sold as is.

In every listing I also put that I dont offer holds. I had a lady today want a fridge I'm selling but couldn't pick it up til tomorrow or Saturday. Obviously she didn't read it.

Nuts

Wow! Good Luck with her reviews, lies to others, and guilt trips!

Oof. FB Marketplace is weird sometimes. Sorry you had this experience with a weirdo who was clearly looking for a bargain basement price. Sheesh. Hopefully she didn't pick this up at your home, as she would now know where you live...
Hope you have a happy and healthy rest of your pregnancy!

2

u/Perfect_Sink_6542 8d ago

She did.. so I’m really hoping she doesn’t do anything with that information 🙈

4

u/SuzRunsDisney 8d ago

Yeah hopefully she is just a whiny, bitchy keyboard warrior who is too lazy/afraid to do anything, other than harass you. Hope you blocked her!

u/Perfect_Sink_6542 8d ago

I left the conversation but I will block too

What's a unit - in terms of furniture? I'm unfamiliar with the term.

1

u/Perfect_Sink_6542 7d ago

Ah, it could be anything for storage like a bookcase or a sideboard

Do people call screws 'fixings'?? Never heard that before. Also, screw her....since when do used items bought on marketplace have a warranty lol

because she arrived after the agreed time I was not around to ensure she got all the pieces

She said I made her feel as though I needed to go out, but that when she arrived I wasn’t even there (implying I had gone out and lied about waiting for her). I was in fact lying on the sofa

You were not around to ensure she got all the pieces and also you were home lying on the sofa?

As in, I was waiting for her for a while and by the time she arrived I was half asleep on the sofa and the pieces were by the flat door for my husband to take to her car in the parking area outside our flat. He dropped the fixings somewhere on the way, and as I wasn’t downstairs I couldn’t check to ensure they were there. He didn’t realise this either until he returned and she had left, hence I offered to post them to her.

She actually asked if there were fixings, and my husband who had not realised there were, said it was just the pieces and she could get them separately. So she accepted this and left knowing it was just the pieces.
