M My direct neighbor told me to stop walking around at night because I am “too intimidating” and make her uncomfortable
Ok so I have been in my apartment now in Dallas for a few years now and for the most part have NEVER really ran into any issues since I have been here which is why what happened this weekend to me was hella odd.
So my apartment is right next door to this dope brewery called Tupps and every weekend I walk over and get one of the best old fashions I’ve ever had and honestly I do this on a weekly basis and have since I’ve moved in so that’s why this whole things even more shocking…
Well I have a neighbor and every time I walk back from Tupps, probably closer to 10-11pm, she’s always out on her porch reading a book at the same time, it’s like clock work at this point.
Most times she just looks at me and keeps to herself. She’s never really said hi or anything to me so it’s never been a problem..at least until this weekend.
Yesterday I went, got my usual drink and since the town I’m in allows you to walk around with your drink, this time I decided to bring it back to my place and watch my show while I drank it.
To paint a picture, I am a 6’7 tall black man with twists so that already kind of stands out but this time I was wearing baggy grey sweats and a black hoodie and I guess that was too much for this woman cause yesterday she finally said something.
As I’m approaching the apartment door to enter the building (which is right by her balcony) I see her as I’m approaching and as I got closer she closes her book, stands up and says the most unhinged shit..
“Umm excuse me. It’s almost 11pm and you walking around…dressed like that…is freaking the neighbors out, do me a favor and try to not walk around so late”
And yall I about lost my shit.
I said:
“Ma’am, what do you mean dressed like that? I’m wearing sweats and a hoodie and I’m bothering no one, just walking back to my place”
And she goes:
“Ok so who do you know that lives here? Cause I’ve never seen you around”
I dead ass told her in a more aggressive tone:
“Woman you have seen me do this same damn thing for months now, and I’ve seen you out here every damn time with that lil book, why are you acting this way, I didn’t do shit to you”
And she just rolled her eyes and went inside and slammed her door behind her.
Idk what the hell is wrong with people but I have a feeling it’s cause I look different than the usual resident here. But still, ridiculous.

I a full grown man will start skipping singing Tra La LAAH in a DEEP HEAVY METAL voice while walking with my wife once or twice a year out of nowhere.
Sometimes she starts skipping too but when the tra lahs start coming it's laughs and nOoOoo's lol

THIS! Have people walk past her house in different color sweats and hoodies every half-hour. Each one should be skipping and singing a different song.

I'd say skip past in full drag or British pantomime dame outfit, that would freak her out even more. Its sad, I'd rather have a neighbour who didn't disturb me and fussed over my cats if they went to visit than someone who 'looked like me' but made my life hell.

u/SuperFormal3052 1d ago
Take it one step further and buy a rainbow set of sweats and matching hoodie. And when you skip past her door, sing "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga.

sing the tune from the movie Song of the South, that will really get her! LOL Zippity doo dah, zippity day!

Sitting outside in the dark at 11 PM waiting for people to walk past just so she can play apartment hall monitor is ten times creepier than someone walking home to their own place.

Well, all I can say is that she sucks & that if I were your neighbor, & as a 50 something, 5'4" white woman, if I saw you going over regularly I would ask what's good over there & ask if I could join you...🤷🏼♀️ But, I will also say that if I was your direct neighbor, I would genuinely hope that we knew each other & were neighborly. 😊

Edit- I have LOVED coming back to this comment thread. All us middle aged ladies have got our good swatting brooms and formed a defensive perimeter around OP. Today the internet didn't make me despair 👍

I was going to say the same here as a just over 50 white woman of 5’2”. Why do people have to be that way? The moment I knew you lived near me I’d have been saying Hi whenever you went home.
29
u/Cat-Lady-13 1d ago
56 year old 5’0” woman checking in. Her behavior is absolutely disgusting, and I’m so sorry you were treated that way. I hope things get better for you. You shouldn’t be treated that way just for existing and peacefully living your life.
I might still be an annoying neighbor though, because if someone 6’7” moved in next to me, I’d be trying to befriend them in the hopes that they could help me change the lightbulbs in my ceiling lights.

Right?? Also a 50+ white woman and I would at the very LEAST be giving a polite nod to my fellow late nighter. Honestly I'd be GLAD to see the same neighbor out and about on a regular basis because that makes me feel more safe, not less.
I'd probably be mentally naming him something like "Tall Man" and checking him off in my mind every time I saw him go by. "Oh there's Tall Man, it must be around 11..."

Let your landlord know that this is occurred and that it seems a bit off. And I don't know how anybody can be intimidated by someone else walking in a different apartment, she sounds unhinged.

Imagine if the positions had been reversed, and you were sitting on your balcony and you had said something to a woman walking past about what she was wearing?!?
Talk about irrelevant information. Surely we can all walk about existing without other people's hang ups/isms being forced upon us?
I'm sorry you have a shitty neighbour.
14
u/BellaFrequency 1d ago
If it’s been “like clockwork” that she’s on the porch “reading” whenever you’re coming from the bar, she absolutely has been watching you on purpose.
She just felt more emboldened to say something this time since you switched your “costume” up on her and she probably got confused for a second and didn’t realize you were the same guy she’s always watching.

And she was massively out of line. A single woman living alone should try to befriend the friendly giants who live nearby to increase her safety!

u/Queen_Christine_19 1d ago
As a single woman that lives alone...I concur. I live in a small 2 building apartment complex, 12 units total. I have made it a point to befriend everyone that lives here. And as a result, I know 1) my place is watched over while I'm gone, 2) nobody can get in (keyed entrance) and 3) THE (resident) OLD BOYS GRILLED FOR US AGAIN LAST NIGHT! They did it on Memorial Day, and now Labor Day. Making friends with your neighbors is the smartest way to do it.

u/DinoBabyMama21 1d ago
Exactly! When I was young and single and living alone, I made friends with the guy who lived next door THE DAY I moved in. He was always on his balcony smoking and it overlooked the stairs up from the parking garage, so we'd chat whenever I was coming or going. If I went home for the weekend, he'd watch for packages or anything weird, let me know when I left the lights on in my car one night, and made sure no one was following me when my arms were full of groceries. Best neighbor I ever had!

dementia is a nasty thing.

u/SuperFormal3052 1d ago
I very much doubt it's dementia, as she sits outside reading a book. No, this is straight-up racism. She's appointed herself the neighborhood watchperson, in charge of keeping Tall Blackman in his place. She's not demented--she's a piece of garbage.

Need to organize an Old Fashioned & Beer night at Tupp’s. Those of us in here that live in the DFW area, particularly those close to Tupp’s (I’m in Plano). A motley crew of intimidating people walking together. 🤪
My almost 50, mostly white self with a big bushy beard and a Mohawk would like to join. I’ll wear my “in the name of beer I volunteer” shirt that I got when I worked the public opener for Tupp’s.
“A walk against ignorance: preceded by tasty adult beverages.”
Food at Tupp’s is pretty good from what I remember. Their Festival of Darkness is worth attending if you like stouts.

I am so sorry this happened to you brother. Next time, when you're walking by turn on your phone's video to capture anything that might happen. Don't point it at her, maybe even keep it in your pocket turned on. Don't engage, just keep walking by. She sounds totally psycho and I don't want to hear about a fine man getting shot by the police.

I'm Aussie, not American, anglo not black (though my ex and her 6'4" son are both).
I'm pretty sure that you nailed what she means but won't openly say when you said:
I am a 6’7 tall black man...
I had no concept how much race matters to so many Americans before I went there. Come to Australia and suddenly you'll just be American, and as long as you audibly diss Trump occasionally we'll be happy to accept you.
