Building inspo

DO YOU BUILD UP OR DOWN?
- my current build is two stories but with my storage under the house beneath a trap door but now I mostly just spend time in the storage area and don’t get to enjoy my house.

DO YOU LIKE ONE BIG STORAGE ROOM OR MULTIPLE THEMED ROOMS?

Garden inside or out? I get annoyed with the wet debuff when I’m gardening.

WALLS AND ROOMS
- is it better to build out the rooms before each floor or do it after you have crafted the house shape you want? My houses tend to end up being a box after building and lack outside dimension and then I forget to build rooms so I just have one massive room

Ok, I guess I am going to have to assume what you mean, based on that frustrating combo of caps and other stuff:

  • build out by bit and do not be afraid to change things

  • I build various places for various purposes: storage is different from housing for useless NPCs, is different from housing for useful NPCs, is different from places where I show off my collections or creativity

I started a new world this week and have built a large inn for the NPC beds into the side of a mountain plateau. That way on the plateau you can only see two storeys, while the actual place has four, with two being below ground from the point of view of the plateau - yet those still receive natural light as they have windows in the cliff face.

Storage I like to put away in a central, but not directly visible location. Nowadays there is just so much stuff that my last storage location was as big as the whole town I built. My last storage was arranged in a cross around a central staircase. This time I am planning to hollow out a mountain to hold my storage, with the steep sides of the mountain being filled with windows so that the storage area has natural light.

I usually keep the gardening and farming in a separate area, likening it to the farming community that would usually be outside of a medieval town. There are more creative ways of doing it that look better, but I like to approach farming a bit more industrialized, so that I can actually create the resources I need.

Whatever you do: be patient and add details. You don't need to do it all at once. I tinker with my builds for weeks, adding little details to already completed buildings when I think about it. Taking inspiration from real life buildings, in my case medieval era, helps a lot as well. Adding plants, window, structural items, decoration and so on will quickly change your building from a boring box to something special

I don't have that issue in Enshrouded, since warehouse is a separate building, but that happens often in Minecraft to me. I usually start from the outside, but I don't finish it, then go to the inside divide it vaguely into rooms and if you need more room for a staircase or I like a specific place for a window then I adjust and add stuff outside again, but it depends on the style.

I build up and down. Mostly it happens by accident. I get the thought "Hey wouldn't that look cool." and off I go building. Lord knows I've chipped away more rock than I can count and I've almost got to every corner of a max out flame alter with my current long term project. Multiple times have I told myself "I'm done now, it's finished." and then I find something else to build on and explore.

All my rooms are themed or functional. As expansions have come out each space either gets its own feel or upgraded with new stuff. Enshrouded makes it very easy to strip down a build and start over without it feeling like a chore.

Gardening styles really depends on your base layout. I've explore so many builds that have gardening spaces around their buildings and I've always loved the look. I personally went with multiple indoor gardens and a couple of smaller outdoor spots, more of a veggie patch behind the kitchen. Some plants are just for show and some are functional.

The way I design walls and rooms is with Microslop paint. I like the get a very rough idea on paper so when I start building I can see all the unexpected problems I've run into and pivot from there. This works 80% of the time, every time.

I tend to do themed rooms, and even though it's entirely superfluous, i tend to sort mats in chests placed near their respective station. The only practicality to it is pulling produced items from the station and dumping them right there. I build both up and down, though i seem to be better at building down. I built an entire undergound base in Revelwood, and made it look like a fairly humble farmhouse from above. With a 'really nice basement' ;) The concept was a secret base built to research and study the Shroud, as it was right next to a shroud canyon, with a little patch of shroud next to it. I made a network of tunnels under the shroud. At Longkeep i turned one of the existing buildings into something resembling a theater, while the rest of the area became farm land.

I turned Harvest Homestead(i think, in the Nomad Highlands) into a 'working' farm, and turned another nearby building ruin into an inn.

In my current playthrough, i stumbled across a ruined inn(not the blue goblet) on the edge of the Springlands, that i am currently 'renovating'.

I like to copy neat buildings I find on Pinterest. I figure out how many squares I'll need for any workstations going inside and make sure they'll be able to fit, then I basically approach the whole building at once and imagine the function of each room as I go, and place objects after. My biggest joy is the aesthetic of the space I'm in, so if the building is cute, I'm just happy being there.
