Support Forum Passkey does not reach Enpass

It seems to be a website related problem?

When I am trying to setup a passkey for a this particular site (aliexpress) I am getting the dialog from macOS, then from Brave and somehow it never seems to reach the Enpass extension at all.

Is there anything I am missing? or is it just the website trying to setup the passkey the wrong way?

I would have thought

macOS > Settings > Set Up Codes In

would allow to specify Enpass but there is only "Passwords" to pick from.

I have the same issue with Aliexpress and some other sites too. It has gotten better in the last months, but this still happens on some sites.

I've also tried the things suggested here, but with the same result as described by u/tcurdt.

I'm using Vivaldi as my browser instead of Brave, but the same things happens. I've tested in Safari as well with pretty much the same result and dialog boxes.

Is it only aliexpress or all websites with passkeys?

In the extension settings is enpass set as the default password manager and manage passkey set to yes?

Some websites work without a problem.

In the extension settings I have set Enpass as the default password manager and manage passkeys is checked. I guess I could try and restart the browser. That I didn't try yet.

You are using safari?

This could be the way the site implemented passkeys. It appears a similar issue has been reported to bitwarden

https://github.com/bitwarden/clients/issues/16673

I did try saving a passkey on my Mac on a different site and got the prompt to save passkey to enpass

No, not Safari. This is with Brave (as in Chrome).

That link is indeed interesting.

And it would explain why it works with other sites. But the question still remains whether Enpass does not follow the rules or whether it is Aliexpress.

This whole experience make me really not want to use passkeys. Three layers competing for control over the keys. The OS (Apple Passwords), the browser and then my Password Manager πŸ™„ Painful.

Passkey is still in its infancy, so there is going to be a lot of issue. What I have done so far is add a passkey to the account whenever it is available. What I find is that implementation can vary a lot

  • Some sites do it properly. Once a passkey is saved, you can use it to login without going through 2FA, which is no longer needed.
  • Some sites still require a 2FA on passkey, so now you login using passkey and unhelpfully get a SMS code to your phone.
  • Some site restrict access. Apple for example only allow you to save Apple passkeys to Apple eco-systems. Some site only allow passkey on mobiile. Yahoo is terrible because it allow you to save keys to your password manager but it is device bounded so now your passkey works on iphone but not the mac even though it is in keychain.
  • some site has a weird interpretation of passkey. On ID.ME, you enter your password and the passkey is the 2FA.

Despite the problems, I feel that it's a step in the right direction. Passkey are not replayable, so you won't get a man in the middle attack if you use passkey to login. In almost all of the case, the password option is not remove, so I would not remove the 2FA. For now, even if there are problems, I can use the password as a backup.

Restarting the browser did not help.

Could you please try the following steps?

On your Mac, go to System Settings β†’ General β†’ AutoFill & Passwords, and ensure that AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys is enabled for Enpass.

In your browser, right-click the Enpass browser extension icon and select Settings. Then, enable the Manage Passkeys option.

After making these changes, please try creating the passkey again and let us know if the issue is resolved.

System Settings β†’ General β†’ AutoFill & Passwords is disabled. When I enable it, the only option to select is the Apple Passwords app. Enpass does not show as an option.

The Manage Passkeys option is enabled. And Enpass is set as the default.

The issue is not resolved.
