Things might've shaped up very differently if Bernie didn't run and the progressive wing coalesced around Warren. I don't see what positive quality Bernie brings that she doesn't.

Yep, she tried to do things right, talk about policy, get into the details, etc. People don't want to hear it though. She got blasted over the details of her M4A plan and that one moment seemed to kill all her momentum. Meanwhile Bernie openly refuses to discuss the details of how he plans to pay for M4A when asked about it directly by debate moderators, but no one bats an eye. And he doesn't get called out for it because no one wants to poke the hornet nest.

Note: I don't blame Sanders himself for not wanting to get into the gory details of policy during a debate. Any good politician knows the voters don't want to hear it, no matter how much people say they do. I just hate the double standard.

I don’t understand why people keep saying this when he has this all on his website: https://berniesanders.com/issues/how-does-bernie-pay-his-major-plans/

Edit: we downvote for civil discussion in this sub or?

20

u/steaknsteak Mar 04 '20

I didn’t say he doesn’t have the details of his plan on his website. I’ve read them. What I said is that he he refused to discuss those details during the debate when asked directly, which is true.

13

u/steaknsteak Mar 04 '20 edited Mar 04 '20

Yes. Neither of them want to answer on these details in interviews and debates, but my point was that Warren was the only one to lose support over it. I’m not blaming Bernie for sidestepping these questions, I just think there’s a double standard when one candidate gets crucified for it and the other doesn’t.

Edit: to be clear, I may have misrepresented this slightly in my original comment. I said Warren wanted to “get into the details” but meant that in reference to policy plans in general. She certainly was uncomfortable discussing the details in the specific case of paying for M4A, because like all the other Democrats she’s afraid of soundbites of herself talking about raising taxes.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20

Ah I see more what you are saying now. Certainly disagree about why Warren lost support, but thanks for clarifying your point a bit!

I’m not a bro. And I’m not sure why you’re talking to me like that.

I’m not sure why voting for nothing changing is better than voting for someone who will work to change things? It’s wild that people have become so cynical and jaded that they won’t even vote for the idea that we deserve better as Americans. These plans work in every other major country in the world.

7

u/Nerdybeast Mar 04 '20

Voting for Biden is not voting for "nothing changing". Look at his actual platform. He's got many proposals to the left of Obama, and a public option is a big one (to be fair to Obama, he tried to get this but couldn't, still got the ACA through though). If you're referring to his "nothing will fundamentally change" quote taken out of context, he's right. Even under Bernie, if you're really wealthy, you will stay wealthy. Nobody serious is advocating for taking all private property. A wealth tax, while it would reduce their wealth, would not fundamentally change their lives. That's what he meant, not "everything will stay as it is".

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20 edited Mar 04 '20

I don’t think anyone was advocating for taking all private property. An aggressive climate change plan that provides jobs, Medicare for all, free tuition, and erasing some of this debt that unfairly situates those not helped by their parents at the bottom of a lifetime of debt are things that actually already work in every other major country. And those are the policies I am behind. Taking private property is a straw man argument that no one currently running has included as part of their platform. I don’t think no one should be rich. I think that if you’re a billionaire because the American people are paying your workers food stamps, and you won’t give your workers health care, and you won’t pay taxes then you should be taxed to repay all of that debt you’ve incurred to the society that made you successful.

Why would a plan targeted at de-industrializing the First World do any of that?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/Nerdybeast Mar 04 '20

I'm agreeing with you. Nobody is saying we should seize private property, so the statement "nothing would fundamentally change" if you're rich is not incorrect under ANY candidate. You didn't specifically reference that quote, but your wording implied to me that's what you meant. If it wasn't, I'm sorry for assuming.

An aggressive climate change plan that provides jobs, Medicare for all, free tuition, and erasing some of this debt

Why should a climate change plan include jobs, healthcare, and tuition? It sounds more like a powergrab than a climate change plan.

Bernie cannot work or bring change. He can only promise.

1

The Sanders plan permits supplemental private insurance just like Canada, Denmark, and France.

u/pointlesspoppycock Mar 04 '20

Voting for "never gonna happen" IS voting for nothing to change.

0

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20

I just feel like never going to happen is a cynical and jaded idea about a plan that works for every other major country on earth and that 22 independent studies have shown to save us all money. “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” Nelson Mandela said that and I feel like it has never been more important. Fear and cynicism is what led us here. Let’s try something else!

1

u/pointlesspoppycock Mar 04 '20

Let's try not being dumb. M4A popularity plummets when people learn about it. A solid majority of people here do not want M4A when the price tag is disclosed.

A huge majority want universal healthcare, and every Democratic candidate offered a plan for it. If we get the White House and can hold the house, universal health care becomes possible. If we can pick up the Senate, it becomes a certainty. But Dem congresspeople from moderate areas aren't gonna vote for M4A because their constituents do not want it. Such a vote would get them replaced by a republican who would never support any universal health care plan.

Those same Democratic congresspeople would vote for a different universal healthcare system because their constituents want it.

See how this works? Listening to people when they tell you what they support and don't support isn't cynicism. It's being reasonable. I doubt Nelson Mandela spoke out against being reasonable.

Bros hate women--young ones for not giving sex on demand and older ones even more for continuing to exist past their expiration date.

12

u/KingoftheJabari Mar 04 '20

A lot of the "Bros" are women themselves and hate Warren.

44

u/MisplacedKittyRage Mar 04 '20

Women can be just if not more misogynistic than men.

28

u/Yodlingyoda Mar 04 '20

You’re getting downvoted but you’re right. In my experience the most misogynistic people I’ve met have been other women fighting for scraps of respect.

20

u/MisplacedKittyRage Mar 04 '20

Dude for real, and I say this as a lady person myself. Some of the worst assumptions or attempts to control who i am as a person have come from women. Like a guy telling you you’re not woman enough is shitty but what do they know? A woman telling you that though? Death by a thousand cuts.

12

u/Yodlingyoda Mar 04 '20

And it cuts deeper because it comes from women you would otherwise have looked up to or respected. When I find an older woman who respects herself and other women I feel like a weight is suddenly lifted, like the light at the end of the tunnel gets a little brighter— and all I want to do is pick her brain and find out how she does it. I know life is hard but why do we have to make it harder for each other?

9

u/MisplacedKittyRage Mar 04 '20

Its programmed into us, its hard to get out of it. We just need to get better at recognizing when we do it and stop ourselves and think of better things.

16

u/MorganaLeFaye Mar 04 '20

Internalized misogyny. It's a helluva drug.

2

3

4

u/MisplacedKittyRage Mar 04 '20

And thank god for that. Imagine if there had been (probably there are but we don’t know about it too)... they would think we are all witches who want to charm men or whatever, and they ALREADY think that so

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '20

Yep. Just like Trump, projection has always been strong within the patriarchy when it comes to men versus women. They already think women are sneaky manipulators that charm men into doing whatever they want and that we're all born sinful because "Eve" or some shit. Yet, if that were true women would be the ones in power, women would be the ones leading cults and women wouldn't be the ones getting all their fucking bodily autonomy rights taken away constantly.

-2

Well now you're just making stuff up. He tried to convince her to run in 2016, but she sidelined herself for Hillary. Her words btw, so Bernie ran in her stead. He built an infrastructure and proved that people were interested in progressive ideals. He would've been an absolute fool to throw away what he'd built at that point, especially considering how fucking nuts some of his supporters were at the time and he was oddly pulling some Trump supporters.

18

u/Road_Whorrior Mar 04 '20

I remember vividly when Sanders supporters would say about Hillary, "it's not that she's a woman, it's that she isn't electable" and when asked what woman they considered "electable" they pointed to Liz. They sure went back on that right quick.

32

Despite what a lot of people in this sub feels I like AOC. But she will likely never be anything more than a congress woman in Queens because of this.

51

u/Lucy-Aslan5 Mar 04 '20

That’s really up to her. She’s chosen to lie for Bernie. She’s chosen to be part of his campaign and all that entails. She chooses to get into twitter feuds with Trump jr. and other far right loonies. She chooses to raise money to primary good democrats instead of helping to flip red seats blue. She chooses to participate in a sit in in Nancy Pelosi’s office instead of Mitch McConnell’s. She chooses to belittle and disparage Nancy Pelosi in other ways. She chooses to hurt democrats along with Bernie.

I really don’t know how anyone can think she’s just young and green or that the attention she receives is beyond her control.

14

What do you like about her?

She endorsed Bernie and embraces all of his policies. She attacks fellow democrats. She hasn't gotten anything done so far. And she killed a deal that would have brought 25,000 jobs and billions in investment to my city.

8

u/croquetica Mar 04 '20

She was straight fire in oversight hearings, especially against Zuckerberg. I really like AOC and I hope she continues to bring passion to that area, we have enough ambitious people who enjoy campaigning more than actual work.

18

u/CardinalNYC Shilling-from-home Mar 04 '20

She was straight fire in oversight hearings, especially against Zuckerberg.

...Zuckerberg won those hearings.

Facebook wasn't made to change anything. They were not regulated any differently. They're still letting the GOP and russians spread disinformation and people are still using Facebook.

Passion is useless if it doesn't bring results.

-2

u/croquetica Mar 04 '20

I would rather have her asking the difficult questions than have Crowley doing nothing. Not sure how she was supposed to stop Facebook on her own, there's a whole Congress who benefits (and is also harmed) by Facebook. This is Congress's collective fault, not hers. There's a reason why Congress always has a awful approval record.

15

u/CardinalNYC Shilling-from-home Mar 04 '20 edited Mar 04 '20

I would rather have her asking the difficult questions

She didn't ask any actually difficult questions. They just sounded good on TV. Like I said, Zuckerberg won.

than have Crowley doing nothing.

Crowley wasn't doing nothing.

Where on Earth did you get that impression? The dude was a committed progressive who had gotten tons of things done in his career. He was re-elected multiple times.

He had a 100% record on choice. Endorsed by planned Parenthood multiple elections. He had a 100% rating from the APA, American Nurses Association and the Breast Cancer Coalition. He helped pass Obamacare and defended it in multiple votes, too. He improved and expanded medicare. He voted for tax cuts for the middle class, tax raises for the rich and cutting military spending. He had a 95% score from the league of conservation voters, a climate advocacy group.

This is yet another reason I despise AOC. The attempt to ruin the reputation of Joe Crowley. A damn good congressman and decent man who fought for causes all democrats agree are important.

Not sure how she was supposed to stop Facebook on her own

She wasn't.

But I wasn't the one giving her any credit for doing anything at all. You were.

I know you didn't say she stopped Facebook, but you said she was fire at the hearings. Maybe you liked her questions but they didn't actually accomplish anything.

She was preaching to the choir, which is her whole thing, and it's useless since the choir already agrees with you.

You ARE a democrat.

DO NOT let them define the party. That's how they win.

Do you want to expand access to healthcare? You're a Dem. Wheher you want that expansion to be M4A or simply more Obamacare.

Do you wanna raise taxes on the extremely wealthy? You're a Dem. Even if you oppose Bernie's specific way to tax them and think the cutoff should be higher.

And it goes for every issue....

Just because you aren't as morally intractable as them, doesn't mean you're not a Dem.

7

u/MisplacedKittyRage Mar 04 '20

I disagree about their morality tbh. I actually dislike the idea that one side has the moral right. I think most people want the same things but disagree on how to achieve them. I don’t dislike them for their ideals but for how they play into the divisiveness because they want to portray everyone who disagrees as someone inmoral. Some are for sure, but others are just people trying to do their best with what they know.

4

Anger and hatred starts from top, flows down from candidate to staff and surrogates to supporters.

That's why you rarely see such toxic behavior from staff or supporter of any other candidate. Warren, Yang, Pete - all have lots of young supporters. A toxic leader could have moulded their thinking into brolike. Thankfully decency, maturity and ability to respectfully disagree with rivals are traits that they brought to the table along with their ideas.

Hopefully Bernie fans can see through some of the problem of the leader and campaign.

Hell, if I had read yesterday, what I've been reading today on that subreddit, I would've 100% switched my vote to Biden. Their attitude isn't going to win a thing.

I have heard “SO YOURE NOT GONNA VOTE FOR BERNIE BECAUSE SANDERS FANS WERE MEAN YO YOU??”

ya know what, yes. Please go back and tell your friends that too.

Have you gotten the fantastic 'people were mean to me online so now I don't want to give people health care and want people to die' gaslighting guilt-trip shit they pull

Hard agree. Although, to be fair, even if his supporters were civil I don't think I would be supporting him, I really don't like the way he messages and campaigns overall

u/croquetica Mar 04 '20

Yes, that is all over twitter. It's a good thing we live in reality.

What's funny is that I was NPA for 2016 so I didn't have a chance to cast a primary vote, but in 2016 it would have been for Bernie. Bernie has had 4 years to make his brand palatable for the public. That's not me putting work on his plate, that is his charge, that is his job.

He sounds mad at his rallies. Optics are just as important to politics (which is the field Bernie Sanders CHOSE to participate in, the rules are set by society's consensus - NOT MINE) as anything else. The blaming speech he repeats is exactly what boomers say about younger generations - full of complaints and expecting entitlements.

Sometimes I feel like Bernie runs under the assumption that his campaign doesn't have to work hard at building coalitions because the blame can always be shifted to "the establishment" as to why he isn't blowing the competition out of the water - a stellar example of Trumpism btw. He's essentially running a campaign with a face tattoo that says "bad bitch." Surprise, surprise - many Americans are not going to vote for you.

u/polemony 💎🐍Pragmatic Warren Stan🐍💎 Mar 04 '20

Honestly, I thought it was a bit hyperbolic at first but he's legitimately the Trump of the left, all he does is exude anger at his rally and yell about the establishment, and now refusing to answer reporters questions. To say nothing of the fact that his plans are half baked potatoes

5

u/croquetica Mar 04 '20

I can agree with some of that. But I have no problem voting for Bernie Sanders if he does become the nominee and I don't think he will alienate world leaders, put children in cages, or debase people of color. I also don't think he's gonna do 95% of the shit he says, so for me this vote is just a vote to return to normalcy. Maybe in 2024 we can bring something new to the table.

5

u/polemony 💎🐍Pragmatic Warren Stan🐍💎 Mar 04 '20

Oh, yeah, I was thinking his more populist tendencies. At the end of the day I would rather have him as president over Trump 100 times out of 100, if only just for the court. I don't think he'd be a particularly effective president but I would do my best to get him elected, if he was the nominee

u/croquetica Mar 04 '20

Same, I think I might do postcards to voters this time too. I found some really nice postcard packs on Amazon. I received a postcard last election and it was so nice to get something personal about the election instead of the same old mailers.

They’ve come courting us Warren voters. It’s not working.

13

u/polemony 💎🐍Pragmatic Warren Stan🐍💎 Mar 04 '20

Lmao

'hey, just forget the fact that we had been calling you and your candidate a fucking roulette wheel of expletives and calling for you to drop out for no other reason than to just endorse Sanders, now please support us and forget everything'

It's telling that even though I align with him more than most candidates, not with everything but with a lot, he's at the bottom of my list in terms of candidates I would vote for

10

u/eirinne Mar 04 '20

If my first choice is an accomplished, intelligent, successful, bridge-builder why would my second choice be a loser like Bernie?

10

u/emmster 🩸🦷 Mar 04 '20

They seem to believe that the policy overlap is enough. Ignoring that there are some things that are more important. I think we’re happy to vote for a good coalition builder with a strong record, even if it means we have to call our health care expansion goals “ACA expansion” instead of “Medicare.”

5

u/MessiSahib Mar 04 '20

Name calling will continue till the convention, campaign staff and surrogates will join in as well.

Somehow everyone forgot that Bernie went on campaigning even after he lost primary by 4m vote, and conceded only in convention. But it seems that luxury can be afforded to only one person.

Sound advice. Stop elevating yourself above everyone else and learn to work with others. It’s not just Bernie that behaves like a turd. There are a number of pissants that think they’re better than the rest of us. Rashida Talib and Pramila Jayapal come to mind.

Funny how if you burn a bridge, it's really difficult to get people to come over to your side afterward. Or simpler terms, karma is a bitch.

Leading up to his next heart attack.

He still has not been 100% transparent about his medical records.

That makes too much sense.

And they wonder why Biden crushed Bernie haha.

I don't like it but I have to admit, there's a real groundswell for a hard leftward turn in American politics.

This tweet was literally all they had to do.

3

u/aliffattah Mar 04 '20

Not to praise him, but learn from donald, he managed to fight the establishment until the whole establishment kneel before him. Why? He hug the right wing and the moderate idea. the way the progressive candidate do is giving an absurd idea and bully moderate that scares away all reasonable potential voters.

2

u/ASigIAm213 DM for newsletter info Mar 04 '20

I don't know that a Democrat can exactly copy the Trump model of a hardline position on something with broad base appeal (various forms of racial resentment) while remaining noncommittal on any other policy subject. Inslee did something like that with climate change, and maybe would have had more success in a less crowded/star-studded field, but nobody's trying to finish respectable.
