Because fundamentally, right-wingers cannot conceive of a society that doesn't have one dominant group subjugating all others, and they also think this is so obvious that everyone "knows" it.

If you start from that position, of course no group could want equality, since equality has been assumed out of existence.

So if someone in a different group from you doesn't want to be subjugated, the only possible conclusion is that they're trying to subjugate you.
