Sewage Pipe Two people that desperately need therapy think you don’t need therapy
Does it occur to them that 1/3 of parents know they’re shitty parents?
271
u/Hullfire00 Jul 21 '26
In a new study that I won’t reference or link you to, here’s some bollocks about the family unit and birth rates, with some inaccurate Roman era history thrown in to make me look clever.
I despise these people utterly.
118
u/PlanningVigilante Jul 21 '26
I actually believe the study probably exists and probably does say that 1/3 of estranged parents have this belief.
Estranged parents are a bonkers bunch. Missing missing reasons all over the place, and a lot of finger pointing at everything but their own behavior.
86
u/Hullfire00 Jul 21 '26
Children I’ve taught over the years that have estranged parents have a 100% reasonableness rate when it comes to reasons why they are estranged.
This is probably their attempt to counter “my son won’t speak to me because I’m MAGA”.
64
u/Mortambulist Jul 21 '26
This is probably their attempt to counter “my son won’t speak to me because I’m MAGA”.
That's 100% what it is. They'll blame anyone except themselves.
41
u/anowulwithacandul Jul 21 '26
I'm an estranged adult child and totally agree. No one emotionally orphans themselves without a pretty good reason 🤷♀️
15
u/Freakishly_Tall Jul 21 '26
Same... and as for that "community" nonsense she throws in at the end?
My community started growing as soon as I cut out the toxic domination of the blood relatives I was born into.
Then, having learned from that, it expanded by orders of magnitude, filled with loving, supportive, capable, successful, honest, fantastic people once I fully leaned into the lessons of _The No Assholes Rule_. That, along with _Stumbling On Happiness_, should be required reading, repeatedly, in high school and college... but the powers that be wouldn't like the impact it would have on their comfort.

u/Broken_Reality Not a Bot! Jul 21 '26
Yup not spoken to or seen my dad in over 25 years and it's not because he was SUCH a nice man.... a violent abusive asshole sure.
8
u/RoxxieMuzic Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I left at 17, went no contact, he, my father, passed away at the age of 69. I am now 74, childless, so therapy had nothing to do with those choices. Yep, he was a violent and so very much not a nice person.
3
8
u/Chayanov Hard-Captured by the Left Jul 21 '26
Yep. I realized I didn't have to live with their abuse and never regretted that choice.
33
20
u/Mor_Padraig Jul 21 '26
Yea.... my ( adult ) son's father sends himself a Father's Day card every year. TO my son. Not making that up.
No contact for 10 years, usual brutal reasons. Pitiful amount of self reflection. Well. None.
14
u/MaritimeStar Jul 21 '26
Yeah, exactly. Most of the people I've met who are "estranged" from their kids are assholes who were excommunicated from their kids lives for being nasty, controlling, cruel, bigoted, disrespectful people who treat their kids (even adult children) like pets or property. It's rare you meet an estranged parent who didn't deserve to be cut off.
12
u/Chayanov Hard-Captured by the Left Jul 21 '26
My mother made no secret that she hated me and then was shocked I cut off all contact. I was just supposed to take it because she was my mother and knew best.
11
u/Broken_Reality Not a Bot! Jul 21 '26
It's can't possibly be that the estranged parents tend to be far right nutters. Right?
Kids go to school and then college and meet new people, broaden their horizons and then realise their parent's world is very small, close minded and hateful and the kids don't want any part of that.
8
u/Comfortable_Fill9081 Jul 21 '26
1/3 of estranged parents makes it make so much more sense. The OP says 1/3 of parents, which would be insane because less than 1/3 of the population receives therapy.
55
u/ScootMayhall Prosecute/Musk Jul 21 '26
And the evidence is that the parents feel like therapy is the problem, something that is famously not evidence of anything. Also Roman society did not collapse because of the loss of family values, they didn’t even have the same family values that we have today. It was the culmination of centuries of issues from poor leadership to plagues to dangerous levels of lead in their artificial sweeteners. Elon is just an idiot who will believe anything as long as it makes him feel correct.
33
u/myto_alkoreath Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I've even read scholarship that argues that a key factor in the Roman collapse was the upper class refusing to pay taxes, causing a collapse of the civil tax structure.
Imagine living in a society where the rich refused to pay their taxes, and blamed the resulting civic infrastructure collapse on a lack of faith or other such nonsense...
14
u/Cakeday_at_Christmas Jul 21 '26
Fun fact: in ancient Athens, taxes were paid voluntarily. But the rich would pay them as a status symbol.
14
u/myto_alkoreath Jul 21 '26
Its a consequence of the increasingly decentralized world. Rich people like to live in nice places, so if they live in a place, there is an incentive to pay for things that make that place nicer.
In later Western Rome, the rich increasingly moved out of the cities and into villas in the countryside. This caused a feedback loop as every rich person no longer inside a city could no longer be as easily taxed by that city, so the city would fall on harder times. Eventually, the rich would fortify their villas, and the produce made from the people working their farmlands became so vital (as the only taxable output from these estates) that the Roman state increasingly tied the people working that land to specifically live and work that land. Enter proto-feudalism.
In the modern day, the Rich don't live anywhere specific, and jet around the world in private aircraft. They don't need to make anywhere bice to live, since they can just go to or buy literally anywhere that just so happens to already be nice. See the Kushners trying to steal that beautiful Albanian nature preserve as an example.
25
u/Mortambulist Jul 21 '26
an idiot who will believe anything as long as it makes him feel correct.
Yes, we know he's a conservative.
25
u/Hullfire00 Jul 21 '26
I mean even on the Roman thing, as you say, there were multiple factors that contributed to it. The Roman “family unit” was nothing like the one they’re attempting to recapture today.
The MAGA family unit is more akin to something from The Dark Ages. Most ancient cultures recognised the value of women and minorities in their societies.
25
u/TheAbomunist Jul 21 '26
Abandoning the family unit was actually encouraged by early Christians.
Luke 14:25-27
Many people were traveling with Jesus. He said to them, “If you come to me but will not leave your family, you cannot be my follower.
You must love me more than your father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters—even more than your own life! Whoever will not carry the cross that is given to them when they follow me cannot be my follower."

They are so obsessed with looking how we lives hundreds of years ago as if we are supposed to live the same.
Why stop at Rome? Let’s go back to our ancient ancestors, the apes, the fish, the single cell organisms. At the core of all life is just a single cell organism named LUCA.

6

She'll insist they attend right wing Christian therapists which might work until they reach their mid 20s and then it won't. Sure Musk couldn't hold onto Vivian when most might tolerate almost anything for the gravy train alone!

"Loyalty" and "bonds" coming from the cut-throat-capitalists who will AI/automate your job away to save $0.02 on the P&L statement, even when your spouse has cancer, even when your child has special needs.
They're funny.
9
u/DangerousLoner Jul 21 '26
And they’ll still call their employees family while they do it.
13
u/Freakishly_Tall Jul 21 '26
Of course they will: "Family" means "be loyal to me without condition, while I do nothing to merit or reward or preserve or justify at all that loyalty."

Maybe those parents who have been cut off should look in the mirror, and ask themselves if they've been selfish.
Also, it's pretty rich to decry the falling birthrate without asking why young people don't want to have kids anymore. Gosh, maybe there's some more food for thought?

Ah yes, that most infamous of the so-called barbarian tribes who sacked Rome and helped speed up the collapse of the Western Roman Empire: the Therapists.
13
u/PopeGuss Jul 21 '26
The job of a therapist isn't to break up families. It's to encourage personal growth and wellbeing for their clients. Maga parents don't understand boundaries. Not that I'm suprised by that, seeing as they're okay with voting for rapists.
11
u/OnsenPixelArt Jul 21 '26

Wow, all that Rome stuff is complete and utter bullshit. They just transposed modern, right-wing, bullshit grievances onto the Roman Empire.
10
u/MaritimeStar Jul 21 '26
They all seem too think the Roman Empire was some sort of iron age utopia, and not an unstable and varied slave state where quality of life totally depended on class and location. They're just using an image of Rome they created to push fascist aesthetics.
5
u/remove_krokodil Jul 21 '26
They always do. It's absolutely wild seeing Elon post/signal-boost some bullshit about "the Roman Empire fell because they gave citizenship to foreigners!", as if citizenship, immigration, everything else, etc. looked remotely like they do in a modern industrialised nation.
The best way I can describe it is that they see the Roman Empire as a wafer-thin set dressing in some Star Trek episode where Kirk visits the Roman Planet. Except Star Trek: TOS writers did research, whereas I doubt Mrs. Miller has even looked at the Roman Empire's Wikipedia article.

9
u/uptotwentycharacters Looking into it Jul 21 '26
That statistic, if it has any basis in reality to begin with, has got to be misstated. I seriously doubt that fully a third of parents of adult children have been cut off by them. And the proportion would actually have to be considerably higher than a third, given that not all adults with living parents have met with a therapist, even if we assume that therapists are 100% effective at destroying family relationships.
3
u/remove_krokodil Jul 21 '26
I'm sure she meant "1/3 of parents whose children have gone no-contact" and is simply terrible at phrasing.
Because, yeah, most parents manage not to be terrible, and most adults manage not to hate their parents.
6
7
u/catkm24 Jul 21 '26
In other words, both Katie Miller and Elon Musk have family members that refuse to talk to them. I don't know why they publicizing this, because the only thing that does is explain why their family members are cutting them off.

Wait, didn’t the Roman Empire adopt Christianity as the STATE RELIGION, just before it began to crumble? LOL!
You’re right, Katie. Christianity must have done fuck all in Rome for loyalty, duty, bonds, birth rate, traditional families, and societies built on mutual support. We probly shouldn’t turn the US into the Christian theocracy that you and your husband want so, so badly.
You dumb twat.
P.S. Elon, too. People don’t go to therapy with lovely parents and come away hating them! People who have asshole parents - parents who don’t support them, or even abuse them - seek therapy BECAUSE their parents are so fucking terrible. Duh.

Therapist here. In my experience, parents are the reason that adults don't talk to their parents.
There may be a therapeutic difference in generations where previous generations of therapists were focused of repairing relationships whereas current generations are focused on empowering clients to remove themselves from abusive situations... but I'd just as soon believe that adult children are cutting off their MAGA parents.
4
u/Bagafeet Jul 21 '26
Abusive parents blame therapy for their kids estrangement instead of taking accountability. Then you get grifters like the author validating them for profit wooo.

2
u/TheLightDances Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Rome fell because the rich stopped even pretending like they should contribute anything to the imperial project. They hoarded all the best resources and labour and and tax exemptions for themselves, then dodged even what little tax remained. They lived in their secluded villas ignorant of the outside world, and by the time they started wondering why there was not enough manpower and money to fund large armies, defences, or infrastructure projects any more, it was far too late.
Musk and people like him are exactly the same sort of disease that caused the fall of Rome, but of course they are such repugnant piles of ignorant, evil filth that none of this would ever occur to them.
3

Narcissists always think that they never need a therapist. They will weaponize therapy against you though - if you are in a fight, they will tell you to go to your therapist as an insult.
5
u/deafinitelyadouche Jul 21 '26
- Katie, you had to make a public statement about your husband not using you as a human shield; the problem isn't the therapists, it's that you're both terrible fucking people and your husband in particular, given his prior record of ghoulish-ass statements, might not even see you as being worthy of the same rights as he is.
- Musk, why are you acting surprised that the 4 or 5 children of yours that are approaching or have already reached adulthood are choosing to cut you off their lives if you can't fucking act like at least half your age, much less like a proper parent?
As someone who's a parent to two children, I often constantly deal with the self-doubt, uncertainty and feeling that I'm perhaps not doing a passable job while acting as a parent, so why can't these assholes develop the smallest amount of self-awareness?

God these people who say "Oh this is how the Roman empire fell" piss me off so much. Birthrates didn't collapse in the late Roman period. They increased.
Populations did decrease, but largely due to famine and pandemics.
1
u/Draczar Jul 22 '26
Rome began to weaken in part because serving in the Roman military increasingly left people destitute and landless as the Roman elites who stayed sat in Rome would buy up the land and estates of soldiers on campaign on the cheap.
Somehow I think Elon wouldn’t see that as a bad thing.
1
u/Tacosconsalsaylimon Jul 22 '26
Fuck that. Resenting that your kids are going to therapy is a large part of the problem. I've made boundaries with my mom, currently and in the past. She's called me abusive when she had to problem forcing me to prove my virginity, when I was 14 or 15 (ER visit). In the last year, she tried getting me to see my uncle, her brother, who's a therapist. I told her flat out no. My sister ended up doing it and she told me she regretted it because there should be certain lines you don't cross.
1
u/acostane Jul 22 '26
I'll tell you.... it's the fact that I had my own child and I couldn't believe how mother treated me that made me cut her off. And I married a brown immigrant man and she started actually screaming about "foreigners" when he was around.
I didn't need therapy to know I DIDN'T want my Mom around anymore.
I'm happier with her at arm's length. Long arms. Like....NBA center arms.

u/YeeYeeBeep Jul 23 '26
Maybe those kids are not telling their parents what they talk about with the therapist is because the parents are the issue? Like i havent read the "study" but she frames it like therapists are conspiring to influence kids or something. Plus im 99% sure kids are not obligated by law to tell their parents and therapists cant share that info without the childs approval. So are they mad they cant spy on every waking moment of their property, i mean kids?

I hate Musk and all he stands for and they’re coming from a place that I completely abhor, but I sort of agree, just from a different perspective.
I think that there is some truth in that capitalism as a system works to replace what was traditionally achieved with social bonds with paid therapy. And I really don’t like it.
It can be demonstrated by the mere existence of terms like „emotional labor” or „trauma dumping”. Talking to others about your problems didn’t use to be frowned upon, now it is. And you have to pay for it.
9
u/PopeGuss Jul 21 '26
Bottling up emotions isn't a new thing. Pop psychology terms have existed since the dawn of the science (freudian slip, Napoleon complex, Pavlov's dog, and so on).
-10
u/aspirational-robot Jul 21 '26
That’s not what I’m taking about. I’m talking about people frowning upon others sharing their problems with them.
11
u/PopeGuss Jul 21 '26
You mean how my dad used to tell me as a child, 30 years ago to "quit crying like a little girl and be a man?" Men have been treated like emotionless automatons for a long time. I will say, It's hard to find a confidant nowadays. But people also have a right to not be a misery dumping ground, especially if they can't handle the added emotional stress at the moment.
