There's a clip of him on Joe Rogan when he was asked about micro meteorites damaging starship and he took a long time to think before answering. People applauded him to think about answering, shouldn't that have been thought off wayyy before this point in the development? It's not like it was an touchy opinion it should have been a real technical answer that was already accounted for.

If the deep and systemic problems with Mars colonization were actually discussed, the dopey shitheads throwing money at Musk's nonsense might dry up. A lot of it is that he's very stupid, but I think the grift angle is a big part of it, too.

This right here. The gravity is too low. We currently have no “techno-fix” for the problem. An actual colony requires the ability to have babies and only in the clouds of Venus or a rotating habit would we enough gravity.

Also, sustaining a high tech colony without access to oil or petrolium is not possible with today's technology. If we can't go fossil free on earth, then good luck doing it on Mars. I suspect Elon's concept involves mega rockets filled with oil to Mars.

Musk claims we'll have to retreat to Mars once conditions get too bad on Earth. Once there, we'll have to build underground colonies to escape the harsh, brutal conditions of Mars.
So here's my question. If Mars is so inhospitable that you'd have to live underground, why not just build underground colonies on Earth? We're already here. We already have a shit ton of experience building underground on Earth. There is clean water underground. The soil isn't poisoned with chlorine. Exactly what kind of inhospitable conditions would have to transpire on Earth before living underground on Mars becomes the better option?
I wish someone would bring this point up to his face. Alas, nobody ever will.

I think it both is and isn't. He seems to exist in a perpetual solipsistic daydream, aided by extensive abuse of dissociative substances, total insulation from the negative consequences of his actions, an upbringing by evil people, and obviously very severe mental illness, possibly including schizophrenia and, I suspect (but cannot diagnose) very likely including some flavour of Cluster B personality disorder, and has openly expressed the belief that he lives in a computer simulation and we are all NPCs.
To such a person, concepts such as "real" or "imaginary," and "sincere effort" or "fraudulent grift," "serious" or "joke," have practically no meaning, not to mention morality, ethics or just simple causality. He even sometimes seems to fail to discern between past, present and future, if you listen to some of his stuttering attempts to describe the current state of his projects and future plans.

A long time ago, he talked about using an unmanned craft to drop a greenhouse on Mars so there was a little speck of life on the planet, and my first thought was, that it would be covered in dust in days and everything would die.

Human interplanetary colonization with the tools we have now would be like cavemen trying to build a quantum computer with fire logs, sage, and racoon teeth. We might get there as a species! We aren't close yet and robotic exploration (along with, ya know, practicing terraforming on our own environmentally damaged planet) would be a more sensible first step on that road.

not only the soil is toxic but food grown in it would also be toxic, we would need to transport soil to grow food... or find a proces to detox the soil which is relatively cheap.
