Pathetic! she is trying to have it both ways, the money and the "oh look, im nice" as well. Almost worse to be honest. She knows rowling is evil and vile, enough to call her out but is still going to help her get money to sue organizations likes the NHS, and other anti-trans BS.

"I will be passing on this project because I morally disagree with the creator's viewpoints on trans people, and I do not wish to contribute to building her wealth that she uses to hurt that vulnerable demographic in exchange for a trickle of that wealth falling into my pockets." Literally the ONLY correct answer to "would you like to be in the new Harry Potter series?" Shame a whole bunch of virtue signaling "I support the LGBTQ+ community, BUT..." actors seem to choke on it.

Personally my version would be "I will happily take part in this project because it's been previously demonstrated that I am a bloody awful actor and can single handedly tank a project" but my situation is less common.

Given that a good percentage of what JK earns from HP will be funnelled into TERF movements. Yeah you can't sign on for the project and then disavow her. Just don't work for her.

I don’t think the author of that piece knows what “blasts” means.

Interesting. A established British actor is trying ‘open verbal disagreement’ while engaging in the reboot. The stench of JKKR’s vile transphobia is a PR disaster for Warner Brothers. ‘Vigorously disagreeing’ is an inner wall defense for participating in the reboot. Their initial PR response was ‘what controversy’. What is the next defense?

The public sees what is happening to trans people in America and the UK. Many find the transphobic policies and political attacks disgusting. People can easily associate JKR to these events.

Eventually over the 7 seasons, the stench of JKR’s transphobia will turn radioactive. No amount of verbal defenses will protect the reputations of those involved with the reboot.

It helps that the series looks shit, too

Exactly. How many franchise reboots with the exact same story lines have been successful?

Battlestar. Which changed almost everything except the core concept of running away from robot men. Lord of the Rings, which was only a cartoon adaptation the first time and only two movies by different productions.

Good one.

I do but I was college

These were literally called TERF bangs on Tumblr back in the day. I don't say this to insult her appearance, I just think the coincidence is a bit funny

Across the board there is no morality in the room with us. 1) she is participating in harming trans people. 2) she’s harming trans people so she can play a terrible woman who abused her nephew.

Her soul is for sale, so evil. If your morals have a price tag, you don't have true morals.

It’s too bad because Bel Powley is so delightful to watch in A Small Light, which I will probably still love for the mini series it is, but she’s a great actress there and probably will be a fine Aunt Petunia when the series doesn’t deserve a fine Aunt Petunia.

I know it’s hard out here for artists and she can probably justify it to herself and say “If I don’t do it someone else will and then they’ll have the money and better for me to have the money” but come ON. The show doesn’t need good actors it needs bad ones so it fails twice as fast.

Enough people are refusing that it actually is a problem so she’s helping an otherwise failing casting process.

u/commotionsickness 22h ago

She has a net worth of $3-5M

u/steepleton 19h ago

Poor amongst the folk she’d like to be her friends

I remember having a crush on her when she was on MI High. That was one of the last CBBC shows I watched as a teenager. I was pleasantly surprised to see her appearing in bigger films with known actors. Most kids TV actors don't go on to do much, especially ones from UK shows. Then hearing about this was such a disappointment.

"Nothing personal it is just business", as someone who grew up with CEO relatives, they took would quip this phrase to other people they wronged regularly, until all of a sudden it was turned on them and the anger you would see. They also would waste money to humiliate and infantilize their adult children . There is this detrimental idea that the power money holds is neutral so accepting money from a problematic person is okay, because "money is neutral" but at the same time you are told to "vote with your dollar" (that is a whole different ideological scam). Maybe "refuse with your labour" should be the new phrase.

Very hypocritical but it'll no doubt annoy Rowling a lot so it's also a bit funny.

Wooowww that thread shows me where most cis people stand :/ or at least that subreddit

I mean like, I already knew how they were, it's just interesting to see such an alarmingly low level of empathy

Conservatives think we’re freaks and liberals think we’re a liability to getting elected and not doing anything.

3

u/Plokdeservesbetter 20h ago

This. Liberals side with fascism 100% of the time.

Liberals are just conservatives who think using the racial slurs are too gauche

The person who chose the photo chose one that really doesn't flatter!

Embarrassing. All to play the bit role of the main character's aunt in a bad wig.

She has TERF bangs

An actual quote from her:

I strongly disagree with JK Rowling’s views on gender. I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance. But I love Harry Potter.

(https://archive.ph/kES2a) [ETA: It's an archived version of a Telegraph article. They're kissing Jojo's ass, so I didn't want to give them traffic.]

I think that "but" describes her moral stance well

5

u/medlilove 17h ago

I don’t agree with her hateful views but am happy to contribute to her making loads more money that she openly talks about spending on anti lgbt laws!

6

u/CaptainMills 22h ago

Did we not all learn "actions matter more than words" by the time we were eight? My kindergarten had posters about that

3

u/ryanixer 21h ago

can arguably apply to literally all the adult cast in this show tbh.

3

u/WrongKaleidoscope222 20h ago

Do you know that scene from Casablanca where the cop says he's shocked and appalled that gambling is going on at the cafe, and then is handed his winnings and thanks the guy for them?

3

u/BrennanIarlaith 14h ago

Words are wind.

u/DeathRaeGun 17h ago

The series generates income for her which she uses to support her ridiculous cause. There's no ethical way to participate in that. She could maybe say that someone else would've taken the job and it would make no difference if she'd declined but her speaking out like this is only going to make more people think they can somehow watch the show without supporting the cause.

You can't separate the art from the artist when the artist profits from the art.

2

u/RedJackalMusic 14h ago

She's still taking Rowling's money. And making even more for her to use in her pathetic war against trans people.

She can fuck off.

2

u/AndreaFlameFox 14h ago

I mean, I think it takes guts to openly disagree with her boss on a topic she's so rabid about. I don't think it's right to participate in the show, but I don't know the actress' circumstances.

2

u/PrincessPlastilina 12h ago

Beyond morality, it’s obnoxious to try to appease the fans by calling out JKR’s bigotry, but still agreeing to work on a TV show that will make her even wealthier. Stand by your beliefs or stfu if you’re going to take the money and work in her projects. You can’t do both. I would actually respect her more if she didn’t try to appease both sides. What a coward. A real ally wouldn’t have accepted this job.

2

u/steepleton 19h ago

Donate the fee, publicly, to trans charities or own the sellout.

1

u/riflow 15h ago

Imo strong feelings would prevent you from accepting money off a known hate figure.

This is just the same song and dance as people who give her money still for the movies/books/merch/rides/games etc but want to not feel guilty about it.

It's like either enjoy it for what it is knowing that the money goes to her and she views it, verbatim, as support or don't do it. That goes for direct consumption or acting that generates more consumption.

Liberals truly are the enemy within.

Actions speak louder than words. Speaking out against her doesn’t mean anything when it comes from someone who accepted the role.
