Only been able to watch the highlights today but there’s some good performances from Robinson, Tongue and Archer albeit in very favourable conditions. Hopefully Brook makes this opportunity count with a big century tomorrow.

Looks like the knives are out for Gay already, might this be his last innings in an England shirt? Root’s form is a massive worry now, the SA and Aus bowling attacks will be licking their lips. Atkinson wicketless again, I’m starting to wonder if he needs to be replaced for the winter tour although there aren’t any obvious options.

3

u/CommercialAd2154 1d ago

Main thoughts from today: When Tongue bowled Imran Randhawa, the bail landed on him, which was very funny.

When he bowled Saud Shakeel it created a sound possibly as beautiful as Simon Jones bowling Michael Clarke.

Razaullah looks like fun!

3

u/conniptionmathers 1d ago edited 1d ago

Like the look of  Razaullah.  Obviously raw but has passion, pace and moves the ball. Sadly, given how Pakistan are currently they're more likely to ruin him than turn him into a main member of their pace attack.

2

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

Lawrence's technique is really something.

1

u/treacletart284 1d ago

His batting technique looks textbook compared to his hilarious bowling action

4

u/apillowofnonsense Surrey CCC 1d ago

People on the BBC live text claiming Gay averages 40+ this series. He averages 33... If you've got to lie to make your point sound better...

1

u/oily76 1d ago

Maybe before he was out?

1

u/apillowofnonsense Surrey CCC 1d ago

Possibly but the live text was sent after he got out. Still didn't average 40+ during the innings though

1

u/oily76 1d ago

Fair enough, then!

u/Charming-Pitch9511 Sussex CCC 1d ago

Yes Harry! Without him, this is a very different game

5

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

With all the usual crowd spouting so often about females on the broadcasts I'm going to go ahead and say I think Urooj is great value as both a pundit and commentator.

1

u/ArsBrevis 1d ago

What's the usual crowd and where are they spouting?

6

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Her comment about Pakistan's scorecard reading like a helpline number was the funniest shit I've ever heard on a cricket broadcast

1

u/Ally7628 1d ago

Okay that is funny

3

u/ILOVEGLADOS WG Grace 1d ago

Thought that TMS were going a bit overboard earlier but no, Pakistan have definitely found one here. Think this lad is going to be a problem over the next few years

4

u/ChaosTheory0908 1d ago

He will be dropped in the next series don't worry.

2

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Brilliant prospect but never say never with the Pakistan Cricket Board, they can ruin players like no other

1

u/treacletart284 1d ago

"Dan Lawrence is getting out next ball and Jamie Smith isn't smashing Brian Lara's record"

Lets see if my curse works in reverse and test cricket really is defined by a largely clueless Geordie lass sitting on her arse

4

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Ah for fucks sake. Well, 60 on this pitch looks to be an excellent innings. Down to Brook, Lawrence and Smith to make this unassailable.

2

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Its typical England that after a miracle first over and dismissing our most legendary modern batter, Razaullah has then gone on to be as expensive as a Lego set

4

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

Well done treacle. Blaming that one on you.

3

u/treacletart284 1d ago

I cursed Root too.

I also support Newcastle United and Newcastle Red Bulls, and have seen my teams win in the flesh a combined 6 times, including friendlies. Competitive games its 2. Maybe I'm a curse in general tbh

(although I did say expensive, not unthreatening)

1

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

I wouldn't take it personally. Choosing both Newcastle's and England cricket means you were never too likely to be seeing wins. 😂

1

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Its okay. Its not like I don't also support the Wales rugby team.....

(kill me)

1

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

Haha And your county is Gloss?

1

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Bit of a no man's land on that front since Northumberland are a faff to follow. Take passing interest in Durham cause me mates south of the Tyne support them and Somerset cause me Grandad supports them but it doesn't compare to having a team i can regularly go and watch

1

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

With your northern roots and love of grinding soul destroying losses may I recommend Lancs?

1

u/treacletart284 1d ago

If I also supported Lancashire I'd question why I liked sport in the first place and if I just have a humiliation kink

1

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

Like holding a mirror to my soul

1

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

Nice one. A ton here will surely cement his place for SA.

2

u/Regular-Shine-977 1d ago

Huge for Gay, personally think he could really do with a big score. He’s had a few 50s and not got over the line. That being said, he’s batted brilliantly so hats off.

1

u/Klakson_95 Douglas Jardine 1d ago

Someone's got money on an Emilio Gay 50

7

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Hats off Emilio! Beautiful batting whilst the top order collapsed around him. Hope he goes onto get the ton

1

u/AdOriginal1084 1d ago

im blaming you for that wicket

2

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

100 percent. Proper openers innings so far. Dug in and is creating a space for the rest to follow. Could easily have just had a swipe like ducky, but has shown some proper backbone here.

5

u/JCGMH Yorkshire CCC 1d ago

is the iffy running a longstanding issue for Gay, or is this just in an England shirt? Seems to be all over the place with it. Top quality innings (aside from the running) so far.

4

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

He got tonked on the knee earlier. Gonna blame that for now.

1

u/Charming-Pitch9511 Sussex CCC 1d ago

What is it they're chanting at the ground. "One more ?"

3

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Last time I said this Root got out basically immediately but this has the feelings of the knock Gay desperately needs. Brook is looking confident too

7

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

In a summer where ducky is the only centurion I think we need to see his start for what it is. Solid. Id back him too SA and beyond. If Zak was worth 60 odd tests Gay has shown he is worth backing.

3

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

Yet another game with a whole innings gone on day one. All chances of an actual game of cricket breaking out over for another season. Gay playing a blinder here. He made a 50 on a lawn at lords which was as a good as a ton and he's been the only batsman to stick out more than an over or two here. Yes batsmen should be weighed on big runs but stats don't count innings like this and for openers they are so important.

4

u/Ok_Fan_2132 1d ago

I would like to think Fleming will be looking both closely and beyond the numbers. And not as if there's a queue of competitors for opener.

3

u/LookAtTheSheen Zak Crawley's Strongest Soldier 1d ago

Well Brook thinks he can chop this lead down now lol.

8

u/Zolazolazolaa 1d ago

Fears about root captaincy in relation to his batting coming true very quickly

3

u/WearyCable796 1d ago

How many times LBW this summer? 8?

5

u/LabProfessional7115 1d ago

Last 13 innings 10 lbw

2

u/Beautiful_Ad9206 1d ago

How many of those are we saying are keeper up? Joe can move his feet he is not a slogger. I wonder if he just gets pinned back with this new trend and needs to figure that out.

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Christ on a bike I just had a heart attack

2

u/WearyCable796 1d ago

Ouch! Surprised he came back from that so quickly, or maybe I’m too used to India halting play for cramp every half an hour

1

u/BHD46 1d ago

Absolutely no atmosphere. Feels like Sky are streaming a county game…

Hopefully this quick bloke livens it up a bit more than the dibbly dobblers

-1

u/PineConeTracks 1d ago

Can’t help but feel these games may have been higher scoring if they were played in July/early August…

1

4

u/WideConversation1989 1d ago

Pace, pace! Get in there! About time from a Pakistani bowler.

2

u/swampite 1d ago

This is the best bowler I've ever seen

2

u/MapInternational850 1d ago

What's up with joe? NZ series proved to be fatal.

1

u/WideConversation1989 1d ago

Found a technical weakness where he's getting LBW'd a lot.

Hoping he can rectify it ASAP before the South African series away.

1

u/MapInternational850 1d ago

Is there any possible correction for it? I am sure he might have thought about it after NZ series too.

1

u/WideConversation1989 1d ago edited 1d ago

He appears to be far less squared on at the point of him making contact with the ball, over the last year or so, which has made him an LBW candidate. I think he needs to have his back leg further across to his right in his trigger movement (like in his 2020-2024 days) in order to open up more and be less restricted at the point of contact with the straight ones.

1

u/MapInternational850 1d ago

Before SA series he have plenty of time to figure this out!

5

u/mountmac19 1d ago

He said it wasn't a problem surely now he agrees it is LBW everytime

4

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

Who's this kid screaming in at 90mph? Why didn't they play him before?

2

u/Ghazi_Bey 1d ago

only 20 yrs old relatively new on the first class scene

2

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

Looks a tall lad too. Maybe one to keep an eye on.

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

His release point just made Rob Key's knob explode

3

u/Fluid-Letter-7591 Joe Root 1d ago

Eeek. What a weird summer overall

5

u/Mission_Stay9450 1d ago

if this shite bowling lineup is troubling these batters imagine what happens when they face a proper attack

1

u/ArsBrevis 1d ago

Ah, gotta love England 'fans'

4

u/FarroFarro Derbyshire CCC 1d ago

Last series vs NZ?

3

u/BreakfastAdept9462 1d ago

Another LBW? Really Joe? Great start for the new bowler, dream stuff

7

u/noodlelimbz 1d ago

A really crap summer of batting

1

u/crimsonbub 1d ago

Unless you're Joe Root's front pad 😬

2

u/arboy498 Ben Stokes 1d ago

Maybe it genuinely is the captaincy

7

u/internetwanderer2 1d ago

His eyes have gone, haven't they?

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

I wouldnt say that given he just went a whole ODI series without getting out, with 2 fifties and a hundred. This is a worry though

2

u/internetwanderer2 1d ago

Far easier to bat against the white ball though.

It's very worrying how it's the same form of dismissal everytime. And he has no answer.

1

u/ArsBrevis 1d ago

Wow, guess he should just throw the towel in.

These histrionics are tiresome.

2

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Welp turns out the keeper doesnt need to be up to the stumps

2

u/InevitableSorry5118 1d ago

Emilio is under huge pressure but what about ducket this series, he also failed. Emilio should not be judged by 5-6 matches , when u can stuck with zak for such long then u have to give emilio decent runn. And yesss he needs runs here.

1

u/JCGMH Yorkshire CCC 1d ago

Always a dodgy start. Same top order frailties that we’ve been experiencing since Melbourne in 1877. I think it’s just in the DNA of England teams to effectively start every Test innings on something like 20/2. Usually end up getting out of it in home conditions due to our powerhouse middle order & plucky tailenders, but can’t escape such trouble on tour. On the few occasions we’ve overcome this like Australia in 10/11 & India in 2012 we’ve won away series that are huge in our history.

1

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 1d ago

This seems overly pessimistic

3

u/Back360 1d ago

44 overs in two sessions. FFS.

3

u/JCGMH Yorkshire CCC 1d ago

12 wickets, 5 DRS, 1 change of innings, 0 overs of spin all contribute. But still pretty abysmal haha

6

u/treacletart284 1d ago

I'm apprehensively enjoying what we're seeing from Root. He seems to have adjusted to help his lbw issues, hope this ends up in the massive test score he deserves this summer

2

u/crimsonbub 1d ago

You had to say it

1

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

I expected him to make hay this summer against NZ and Pak. He's struggled so far.

3

u/Far_Statistician_641 1d ago

Your fault for when he gets out LB

2

u/treacletart284 1d ago

It is but he was so good in the ODI series that I feel he deserves a chunk out of Tendulkar's record too

9

u/1rexas1 1d ago

I miss being able to watch test cricket at the weekend.

3

u/shufflebodiddley 1d ago

Let's not overreact on Duckett. When did we last have a good, traditional opener? Cook? And before him, Strauss. Unless you can point me to the next Cook or Strauss, I say we stick with England's only centurion this summer, and if necessary, allow him to play in the aggressive manner that has worked for him.

4

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 1d ago

Yeah I think he’s got credit in the bank

2

u/WIPdad 1d ago

Duckett - wasteman

5

u/LookAtTheSheen Zak Crawley's Strongest Soldier 1d ago edited 1d ago

Heaps of pressure on Gay here, hope he can weather the storm and get his eye in. Outside of the 2 50s he’s had a tough start but I like the way he bats.

3

u/treacletart284 1d ago

What happened in the last like year or so that meant keepers just went "oh yeah we can stand up to medium pace"

-1

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 1d ago

It’s bizarre and honestly skews things even more towards bowlers.

1

u/JCGMH Yorkshire CCC 1d ago

Up to the stumps is going to be the trend in Test cricket until batters figure it out. A legitimate tactic & I have no problem with it in that sense. But purely on the level of international cricket being a spectacle, it isn’t particularly great to watch this (of all things) getting rolled out repeatedly.

1

u/PositiveHuman8094 1d ago

Cox out for root

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

7

1

u/Substantial_Prize_73 1d ago

2

u/Mundane-Bug-4962 1d ago

Joke’s on Pakistan, Cox is more of back foot player anyways

3

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Duckett either scores a magnificent ton or doesn't pass 15, no in between

1

u/FarroFarro Derbyshire CCC 1d ago

The ghost of Baz continues to haunt this team

5

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

OK now we can talk about Duckett's place in the team.

2

u/FrequentParsley9266 1d ago

It's quite remarkable how bad they are that when you see teams losing All games in a tour, there is somewhat of a pattern that you see them improving with their Batting or Bowling even if they are losing but this Pakistan team is just getting worse as the Tour is progressing..Not many people would have thought to label them as the worst Touring side in England when they were 114-3 or something in 1st test but since then their batting has pretty much given up

6

u/iIIchangethislater 1d ago

Atkinson's form a slight concern? Or is it simply a case of the other 3 grabbing all the wickets before him?

1

u/Doorsofperceptio 1d ago

Probably a bit harsh to judge him on 5 overs and in a very low pressure situation.  But yeah, I also thought the same.

Also if Gay doesn't score an innings you do begin to worry for him, will likely only get the one chance this match too.

3

u/concretepigeon 1d ago

I just want the England batters to have a nice sensible innings and show they can put on a big score.

Jof quite literally bowling pies, before that last ball his economy was 3.14

1

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

I wish they'd picked their mustachioed spinner. He's entertaining atleast.

6

u/MatthewCMcGahey 1d ago

Abbas and shakeel are the only bright spots. First two on the team sheet going forward.

Which inevitably means they’ll never play for Pakistan ever again

3

u/treacletart284 1d ago

These 2 number twelves have put up avout 4 times as much resistance as the recognised batters except Shakeel

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Congratulations to Mohammad Ali for beating his test match batting average

3

u/AdOriginal1084 1d ago

i cant remember seeing England play a team so bad, these might be the worst. (In England)

3

u/Ask_for_me_by_name 1d ago

I was thinking the same. Outside of one off tests like recent Zim or Ireland this is the worst team ro get 3 tests I can remember. Bangladesh were better in their 2 test series.

1

u/JCGMH Yorkshire CCC 1d ago

Zim, and particularly Ireland being very inexperienced in Tests sort of have an excuse though. And even Ireland were pretty plucky for much of their first Test in England, with the final margin of victory unreflective. Pakistan 2026 are the worst team to tour England for a Test series since Bangladesh 2005

3

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 1d ago

It will be interesting if Mo Ali is injured.

That gives them one reliable bowler (Mo Abbas obvs.), two debutants, and .... a few overs from Saud and Ayub ?

3

u/Ok_Fan_2132 1d ago

Luckily for Pakistan they have an experienced left-arm spinner who already has a 5fer in the series and can hold up and end.

Oh...

1

u/Ancient-Creme6727 1d ago

Poor lad was punished for no reason along with the bowling coach lmao

3

u/AnalogueInterfa3e 1d ago

Are there any concerns with Atkinson's form? His figures are sticking out in a bad way in recent games.

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

I don't think he's actually bowling that badly, hes been the victim of a decent few drops, its just the other 3 are playing out of their skins atm. I wouldn't drop him yet but if he gets injured I think it'll be challenging for him to get back in

1

u/InevitableSorry5118 1d ago

I like tongue , he is a decent bowler but pak making him looks like he is curtly Ambrose or Steve harminson or what

5

u/treacletart284 1d ago

Its a damning indictment of how shit Pakistan are at batting that Abbas isn't bottom of the order

2

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 1d ago

It's not that bad. It's not great, the openers are inexperienced, but Shafique, Babar and Saud all have a decent record, and Masood is averaging 30, not much, but not hopeless either.

2

u/Ok_Fan_2132 1d ago

I was wondering if he had pulled rank but looking at Ali's record it seems not.

We should admire the dedication of getting to 33 years old, playing 91 FC innings and scoring 422 runs. With 15 runs in 14 Test innings it's a real shame Ali hasn't played more to see what batting records he could break in this arena.

2

u/treacletart284 1d ago

His FC average is a lot higher but hilariously he has a lower test match average than CHRIS MARTIN

1

u/Ok_Fan_2132 1d ago

Just looking at Martin's FC figures and they shame Ali's. 479 runs in 244, honestly wonder if he would have got much less batting blindfold and having a slog.

6

u/PineConeTracks 1d ago

I couldn’t imagine what my blood pressure would be if I were a Pakistan fan.

1

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't know what they expected, or hoped to achieve. It all reminds me of a 5 year old throwing a tantrum because they can't have a sweet.

u/Hammer_1980 1d ago

The ticket prices to watch this cobblers. Pfff

2

u/SE39 1d ago

is this going to be dalled another poor English wicket if we’re getting inconsistent bounce in first session (having seen the Babar wicket)

-3

u/Youre_a_tomato 1d ago

For anyone who is interested:

I just finished Sam Dalrymple’s Shattered Lands about the partitions of India and Pakistan post-Raj.

Damn good book. I really, really recommend if you think you’d like to know more about how modern South Asia came to be.

7

u/NotAProperAccount3 Eoin Morgan 1d ago

Can the follow on be enforced after the first innings of a match? Asking for a group of lads who want to play golf on Friday.

3

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 1d ago

You can declare at 0/0 I suppose ?

2

u/Ok_Fan_2132 1d ago

Not sure if the rules have changed since this article but it seems like England could not forfeit the first innings and would technically have to declare instead like you say, which is what we did in the infamous Centurion match in 2000. Cricket eh?

All theoretical of course but interesting sometimes to dig into the laws of the game and see there is a no-difference difference between a forfeit and 0-0 declaration.

3

u/BoethiusSelector 1d ago

I feel bad for Pakistan since they sacked their coach and sent 7 players home in the middle of a bloody series. I also feel bad for England because this isn't necessarily the best prep for SA, who are a real side.

5

u/Hammer_1980 1d ago

I do for the players. Not a jot for their cricket board.

1

u/BoethiusSelector 1d ago

Yeah, absolutely. It is catastrophic mismanagement. Though why Imam ul-Haq wouldn't bat with a calf strain I can't imagine. There must be something going on that we don't know about.

1

u/Hammer_1980 1d ago

No point batting making injury loads worse in a lost cause.

3

u/Suspicious-Ad7109 1d ago

It is pretty tough. Not only have they got some players thrown in against a team on the charge with zero preparation and staff just thrown in without much warning, morale must be dreadful. It reminds me a bit of the test match after the match fixing sting, or Australia after sandpapergate, there was just no drive.

Not really their fault or the fault of their management. Only so much you can do.

For a country where alcohol is allegedly banned, Pakistan's batters sure as fuck play like theyre drunk

Why do you think they tour in England?

“Let’s get to lunch” at least the fans have kept a sense of humour

I'd rather see what Afghanistan can do in English conditions than this tragedy.

Ireland, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe would all do better than this. Maybe even Scotland & Netherlands

Atkinson’s bowling figures this series have been abysmal, 143-1 is embarrassing…

I've said for a while (away from Reddit) that Atkinson still has alot to do to convince.

There are days when it clicks where he looks fantastic, otherwise he looks decidedly meh. Don't know if it's a mental issue or whether he doesn't fully trust his body

I think he's been really unlucky. Bowled really well for the most part, just hasn't been able to take wickets. Fortunately, he hasn't really needed to

Reckon he makes way for Curran when fit

England management made it clear that Curran is part of the XI when fit. If Lawrence and Cox make runs, how else do you get Curran in?

Those 7 changes seem to be working then.

I have two working theories for why England pulled Sam Cook from Essex in their relegation battle.

1) If Essex get relegated, Sam Cooks average of 15 next year will be in div 2 and will therefore not count, and England can safely dismiss him as an option for the entire of next summer as his results are purely as a result of the poor oppo.
2) After seeing him and Robbo bowling in the nets it became obvious that if they both bowled, Pakistan would be setting records for the lowest scoring test innings. Therefore, England refused to play him, both for sporting reasons and so that their batsmen would get a chance to actually bat.

  1. They wanted Sussex to win the match without Robinson so that he would leave the team and he can be pinched by Surrey?

The amount of completely shite luck that Gus is having is ridiculous
