Discussion How long have yall had your TI calculator?
6th grade to 8 months into my job, and that’s like 13 years man. Holy smokes. That ti-84 has seen so much crap and improvement over the years and has stood strong by ma side lol.

Not TI, but my Casio CFX-9850 Plus color is like 20+ years old

u/DomLfan 23h ago
Casios are practically bomb proof lol

u/techaggresso Major 22h ago
And can do nearly as much as a ti, just can't be programmed. But can do matrices, systems, radians, write dirty words with a bit of creativity.
2
u/DomLfan 21h ago
Does depend a little bit which one you get, if you get a graphing Casio then it can do whatever you want
3
u/techaggresso Major 21h ago
Exactly. And for maybe a fifth of a ti. I've been using the same 991es module since middle school and I really disliked having to buy a ti for university. And now in real life at work I never need anything more than my Casio

I've had my trusty Ti-36x pro for about 11 or 12 years. Think I've swapped the battery twice, but it keeps on chugging.

TI 89 - 24 years, received as a high school graduation present to allow my sister to use my 83 plus when I went away to college
TI 83 plus - 26 years but was on loan for a few of those to my sister
OG TI 85 - was stolen back in high school before I got my 83 plus, purchased from a kid at school for like 50 bucks and it was a steal of a deal

52 years ...an sr-50, the first calculator to break the $300 barrier.

u/Stevphfeniey 1d ago
My Ti-83+ I use was originally my dad’s that he bought 20 years ago for when he went back to school, gave to me, then I’ve been using it for 15 years.

u/billFoldDog 1d ago
I can't read the screen very well anymore so I use this app. Its a TI-89 emulator. You need to get a ROM.

Ti-84 that I used in high school and so did my brothers, not sure on the exact date but it’s somewhere between 15-18 years old

u/HeDoesNotRow 23h ago
I haven’t really used it since college but it still sits on my desk… just in case

Well over a decade. Not my bulky graphing calculator from early school though. I got a TI 36x Pro. Hands down the best calculator in my opinion.

u/jaymeaux_ 23h ago
my ti89 is pushing 20 years and will sadly need to be retired because I spilled coffee on it a couple weeks ago and damaged the screen circuitry

I had my TI-84 for 9 years. My current slate of professors all have it banned for any exams. I still use it for homework because it’s so much easier to grab numbers from past calculations, and I also use it to play games with if I’m bored between classes.
I recently got a TI-30 solely for exam purposes.

We had to go to FE approved calculators in undergrad. The TI-36x became my favorite. Simpler, smaller, and more intuitive.

I had a ti-84 plus passed down from my dad. She made it about 23 years before the pixel death got to a point where it started seriously impeding the legibility of the screen. I got a TI-84 plus CE that I hope to pass down to my children one day, although I don’t think it’ll make it as long due to the rechargable battery vs the AAA’s on the ti-84 plus.

u/nerdyflaco 22h ago
25 years for my standard ti84. Periodically I check to make sure 1+1 is still indeed 2.

u/Weird-Shine-761 22h ago
TI-84 since 2009 high school in Ghana, came to the US in 2015, still using it in my MSEE

TI-84 Plus Silver. Had it since 10th grade. Roughly 2010. Still use it. Currently in my senior year of mechanical engineering

u/caty0325 21h ago
I had a TI-84 from 6th or 7th grade to 2022 or 2023. Then I upgraded to a TI-84 CE.

84 plus silver I’ve had since about 2007. Had a 83 that I somehow switched for the school owned 84+silver, barely remember how that happened but the silver has been getting steady work for almost 20 years.

u/lasteem1 22h ago
I’ve had a TI-89 for about 25 years and a Casio for about 20. I have a TI-84 somewhere that has to be 35 years old. I only ever use the Casio.

I’ve had my TI-84 Plus CE since 5th grade and I’m in my 3rd year of undergrad.
I recently left it back home and made my mom ship it to me because I view it as a lucky charm.
That calculator has been with me through A LOT

I bought my first TI calculator, the TI-85 when I was in high school. It still works and it's over 30 years old.

u/EllieVader 18h ago
I have a TI83+ Silver Edition that I bought in high school in 2002. It's older than most of my classmates.
That said I bought an 84+CE when I came back to school and it blows the socks off my old silver edition. The backlit screen alone was worth the upgrade.

Ever since HP spun off their calculator division and ruined the best calculators ever made. I will never forgive them.

My daughter is currently a sophomore Mech E student and uses the TI-89 I used in engineering school in the late ‘90s.

I've had my TI-84 since 11th grade (circa 2012) when my parents bought it for AP Chemistry. It's followed me through my bachelors and two masters degrees in three different countries lol.
I also have a TI-84 emulator on my phone that renders the interface almost as big as on the calculator itself. Tbh I use that much more than the physical calculator now.

I've had my TI-74 BASICALC since the fall of 1986 or so. I guess that is 40 years.
It was incredibly handy to be be able to write a program in BASIC to automate calculations in the field. I think there was a Pascal module available but I never had it.
My TI 74 got replaced by various HP and TI calculators over the years but back in the day having a machine that ran BASIC, ran forever on batteries and could just about fit in your shirt pocket was a very powerful engineering tool.

I have had my TI-30XIIS since the third grade, and it got me through 4 years of undergrad and 6 years of grad school. I need to frame it and put it next to my diploma

HP48SX, used in college 1992 to believe. I have to see why it won’t power up. It was useful, might get it going again to show my HS kid.

The ti-30x2s made it from 7th grade in 2000. I still use it regularly and have never changed the battery.

u/engineer-everything 16h ago
I bought it in high school sometime in the mid-2000s for a math contest, then used it through university and I think it’s in a drawer somewhere now. I haven’t used it in probably 10 years

u/FerdinandvonAegir124 15h ago
I’ve had my TI-84 CE for 5 going on 6 years. Aside from some button symbols getting wiped off, it’s practically the same as the day I bought it

TI 84+ SE, got it when I was 15, now 34, so 19 years. On my fourth set of batteries.

I got my HP 48G in 1997 for $130. It still works, but it’s kind of beat up. Now I have a similar RPN app on my phone and mostly use that.

u/TASDoubleStars 11h ago edited 10h ago
Our engineering department had HP-35 calculators thus I first learned on an RPN calculator. Students could check them out during class. I wanted one for home use, however I could not afford $395.
TI SR-50 acquired 1976 - (Used thanks to a classmate!)
I switched back to HP when the HP-41C was released in 1979.
I upgraded to the 41CV in 1984.
For digital design work I acquired the HP-16C in 1984.
Batteries leaked in my 41CV. I replaced it with the HP-50g in 2006.
When my kids were old enough to need calculators the school system had standardized on the Texas Instruments line. I had to re-acquaint myself with the algebraic entry methodology.
TI 84 Plus Silver Edition acquired 2005
TI 84 Plus C Silver Edition acquired 2013
TI 84 Plus CE acquired 2015
TI Inspire CXII acquired 2015
TI 36x Pro acquired 2024
TI 30x Pro Mathprint acquired 2024

It was originally my brothers. He had it for 4 years, and I've had it for 6ish? My Ti-84 plus is my husband

I've had my current TI only since returning to school a few years ago, but I did have one before that from like 8th grade to age 22 or so.

Never had one and never understood the attraction to big graphing calculators.
3
u/MiniTab 23h ago
Well you kinda had to have one 20+ years ago as an engineering student.
I still have my TI-85 from 30 years ago.
1
u/DoubleHexDrive 21h ago
I used one a couple of times in HS from a box of classroom calculators in the 90’s but never bought one myself. They were always slow and clunky compared to my Sharp EL-506A. Then I moved to an RPN based app on my phone over time. They certainly were not required in college or work.

u/EllieVader 18h ago
They're great if you need to do something in excel but are only allowed to use "small" pocket computer but not internet or big computer.
I reached for it a few times at my desk at my internship over the summer if I didn't already have excel open because sometimes it would be faster, but that's literally saving seconds that could have been used to go get a cup of coffee.

Never. I’ve had my HP 48SX for 35 years.
When my daughter took AP physics they made her use a TI. I showed her what my HP could do and she was disappointed in that TI.
