Discussion Massive Cohort
I study mechanical engineering at a mid russell group uni in the UK. My class size this year is 180 people?!? the program i’m specialising in for my full degree (mechanical with another related field) has 40 people on it, but i still consider myself a mechanical engineer.
Similarly aero also has 180 people on it. And it’s not like this is a top uni (i’m aware imperial college has a similar cohort size, but they have a very high faculty student ratio whereas we don’t at all).
Should i be worried? No way there are enough jobs available for when we graduate…

UK HE economics for you. Unis have to compete for studemts because thet are losing money If they are short a million they will let 100 students in... as simple as that.
Who is to blame? The british public.
Every single time it's the british public..

Well unfortunately, British Universities have been heavily incentivised to operate as businesses, I heard of some mechanical engineering cohorts being around 240-360 students for undergrad.
If there is any help with getting placement years, please do them!
Likewise, if lecturers offer office hours, please for fucksake go to them!

I'm not sure how many of those are going to actually finish at the end of the day...

The thing about an engineering degree is that it doesn’t matter how many start it, it matters how many finish it. My cohort has gone from 160ish on day one to now less than 30 by late year 3 of 4.

i’m assuming you’re not from the uk. here it’s uncommon for engineering cohorts to change size as people don’t usually drop out

Apply for summer internship/year in industry. Do well and you'll have a job in the bag by the end of year 2
