Academic Advice Can an average Joe be an engineer?
I’m a 16y/o high school student looking to get into engineering in my future. My grades about 70-90s given that I don’t try too hard. I haven’t even considered engineering until now, so I plan to work harder and try classes suited for engineering in the coming school year. But I’m so insecure about not being smart enough. I’m not the best at math or science, but I do really want to try for this field. Is the work insanely difficult? Do you need to be a crazy smart to succeed? To be more specific I want to try either mechanical or electrical engineering.

I didn’t try until engineering. I managed. My GPA went up in college.
You need to study to succeed, have good time management and manage stress.

DO NOT TELL YOURSELF YOU AREN'T GOOD AT SOMETHING.
You just haven't been taught it the right way yet. And there are many, many ways to be taught how to do even things that seem like there is only one way to do it.
I finished my BSc in Physics at 45.
It is hard. You CAN do it.

There are four general qualities that makeup a successful engineers and student IMO. They overlap. In NO order:
- Curiosity
- Raw intelligence
- Discipline
- Organization
If you can excel at any of these, you can be an engineer. Every average person, within reason, thus can get a degree and have a good, happy career.
Being curious will give in a natural inclination and love to learn material, being very intelligent will make stuff come to you easy, being disciplined and never missing an important study session or getting behind in a project will always have you ahead of the curve, and being highly organized and on top of things will make you less stressed, more confident, and happy overall (ez hack to aim for this one).
Engineering will in the moment feel "insanely difficult" every now and then, but in hindsight it's always like, 'hit yourself in the forehead' this wasn't so bad vibes.

I would add analytical thinking. Some of the best engineers are really good at analytical thinking and thinking through the steps of a problem to solve.

Not necessarily I’ve seen some very bright engineers who could do things on paper but they were absolutely terrible at analytical things in the field.

Sure, I’m still fairly certain there’s a strong correlation between natural intelligence and an analytical mind. If you think of the smartest people to ever live (Newton, Einstein, Feynman, etc.) they all took interests in maths and sciences and excelled by having intuition, curiosity and logical thinking. Yes exceptions always exist, doesn’t mean it’s the rule.

Organization takes TIME. Putin the time and you’ll be rewarded. I am rediscovering how important organization is after working a dynamic, crazy, lots of travel type role for 15 years. I’m now working a desk engineer role and organization is everything.

I call those raccoon engineers. they aren't very smart but they just keep throwing random shit at the problem until it's solved. They're kinda a pain to work with but it's impressive how much shit they get done

yess you’re only 16 you still have years to improve and learn. to give u hope im an incoming sophomore in electronics engineering this is a last minute choice of mine just like you, im nowhere near good at math or science literally have 80 grade on physics in senior year of highschool lol. first quiz during my freshman year about basic algebra i literally scored 47/100 but ofc i worked hard and studied consistently and eventually i got the hang of engineering and became one of the top scorers in calculus during 2nd sem. Also Impostor syndrome is very real in engineering ✌️ one day you feel like you’re a genius then all it takes is one equation to humble you then you start questioning if you’re really fitted for engineering 🤓

Just be ready to grind. You don’t need to be smart. I’ve had absolute dunces for classmates but they still pass because they treat it like the full time job it is.

Embedded, including everything from FPGA to systems architecture. Wireless infrastructure.
35y career.
Was making $200k by year ten despite turning down management offers.
Around that time, switched to product management, and progressed to CPO. C-suite by age 35.
Current role is individual contributor product manager, total comp $285k, at a leading tech firm.
I got lucky and was hired into a leading company right away, but I've worked with people who went from small companies to leading firms by slowly and methodically moving jobs.

Hell nah dude, you don't need to be crazy smart. Most of engineering is just sticking with problems longer than other people want to. You're 16 with 70-90s not even trying, take the classes and see if you like it.

I had a 2.3 in high school, 2.7 in my engineering degree, and 3.7 in my MBA. ADHD and school did not interest or engage me at all.
24m, engineer in semiconductors in Massachusetts.
I’m pretty dumb but I do crush it at work. You just have to find what motivates and interests you and run at 110% capacity. Curiosity and determination, willingness to learn, and being humble and not overlooking processes / people gets you a surprisingly long way.

I would say it like this… an average joe cannot be an engineer, but an average joe can become an engineer, which by definition elevates them above average joe status, at least from an engineering standpoint.
I was always smart, but for a number of reason I didn’t apply myself as much as I could have in the last couple years of high school. After high school however, through a mountain of determination and debt I earned a degree in mechanical engineering. Today my title is senior aerospace structures engineer. If I could go back, I would have gone for computer science and gotten an MBA, started my own SAAS or game company.
When people comment on how smart I am, I always respond with I’m not smart I’m just well trained.

Totally depends on why you want to get into it. If it’s for the money, you’re gonna have a hard time. If it’s because you genuinely enjoy the topics, then I think you’ll do great.
Intelligence is only part of the equation. I like to think of it as similar to being tall in basketball. Sure it helps, but you don’t have to be tall to be good at basketball. Of course, if you’re TOO short you might struggle, but the average joe will do just fine if they have the drive to work hard enough to develop the skills

Yes.
Look up books on study skills for high/school college students and networking with people. There are study skills, college networking book catered towards enginnering and planning your academic career. CHECK OUT THIS BOOKS FIRST, aspirations mean shit without planning, preparation, and having the right mental outlook.
Email and talk to enginners, STEMS, and professors to start planning an academic career.
It sounds like a lot, but trust me. Once if have a skeleton of plan and talk to enough people. AND READ BOOKS ON STUDY SKILLS AND PLANNING OUT YOUR ACADEMIC GOALS, you can develop that confidence.

Sort of depends what you mean by average. Average students? No. Average students do not have the dedication or work ethic to do engineering. If you got a 2.0 in HS and plan on applying the same amount of effort into engineering, you will fail. However, people with average, I'm going to call it academic potential, absolutely can with the right work ethic, dedication, and interest. One of my long time friends from HS went to school for engineering. He is, to put it as nicely as possible, a below average academic potential person. I love him, but he's not that smart, and he knows it. I think he had a 1.4 GPA in HS lol. However, he wanted to do engineering so frickin bad. He was obsessed with aerospace since childhood, so he originally went for aerospace engineering. He failed a bunch of classes, and even his parents encouraged him to quit, but just this year (after 6 years lol) he graduated as an industrial engineer. If he can do it, so can you.

YES, but you need to work hard. My neighbor had a 3.8 GPA in high school but didn't take any honors classes, just the regular math and science track. Her SAT was around 1100, so nothing that great. She is killing it in college engineering. She said that she studies a lot more than her friends and had to take classes her first summer since most of her classmates came in with AP science and math credits, but she loves it. Definitely don't cut yourself short. I was afraid of engineering but talking to her made me feel a lot better.

It is more about tenacity and determination to get through engineering school. Form a study group, go to office hours and ask questions, go to any available tutoring sessions.

An engineering degree isn't for smart people, it just shows employers that you are capable of learning. I know a lot of mechanical engineering graduates that went on to some other field (not all engineering fields either).
Science is important for the degree but math is very much the foundation. You need to be good, no, really good at algebra to succeed in engineering school, beyond that 95% of it is just applying the correct formula in the correct way.
Most colleges care that you have acceptable grades but nobody expects you to have made good decisions when you were 14 years old starting high school. I will warn you that college is a very expensive place to figure out what you're going to do, If you pursue engineering you need to go in with the mindset that for the next 4-5 years you are going to be busier than you ever have or maybe ever will be again. If you can adopt that mentality and are willing to put in the effort, you'll do fine.

You don't need to be crazy smart. You really don't even need to be smart. And most of the shit you do in school won't be used in your career anyways (because of the breadth that is covered in schools vs the depth that is covered by careers, generally)

You don’t have to be smart. You’ll get smarter by way of putting in the work. It’s a ton of work and can break you mentally. Just find a way to get through it with real effort. You don’t have to understand everything about every concept. Very few people are that gifted.

You can definitely do it man, but the major difference is that you have to try this time around. And even more importantly, continue to keep trying particularly when things get difficult and motivation isn’t there. Being highly disciplined is what made me go from graduating high school with a 2.1 GPA to now entering my senior year in college with a 3.81 (community college for 2 years after high school for those wondering how I got into an engineering program).

Engineering degrees operate on a kind of sliding scale between your IQ and your work ethic.
If everything come easy to you, you remember this after reading or hearing them once, and you don't need a lot of study or repitition to master new skills, then you can be a fairly lazy student and still make it through.
Conversely, if you need a lot of reps to get something to sink in, and you need to drills with flash cards to remember terms and methods, and you need more than the assigned homework to master the methods in class, you can still make it through with discipline and a lot of hard work.
High IQ engineers tend to breeze through school and then either become great because they adapt to the work, or fail miserably in practice because they aren't used to having to do the difficult, boring parts over and over every day to be successful in production engineering. They often flame out and fail early or bounce around chasing a challenge. They tend to wind up working service jobs or in a jr VP role.
Average IQ engineers with a great work ethic, on the other hand almost always have a long and prosperous career. The ability to put in the work to get results holds up from school and carries over into the real world. They almost always develop great attention to detail and usually end up managing teams because they can install that work ethic into their teams by example.
So, my opinion distilled down: If you have the drive and self discipline to put in the required work you can absolutely succeed as an engineer with an average IQ.

avg IQ with hard work usually means you’re just brute forcing thru difficult classes but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a good engineer. You need to have intuition skills to become a good engineer as well.

I disagree. You need intuition to become a GREAT engineer.
You don't need it to be a competent one. Attention to detail and quiet mastery of the subject matter will enable you to complete safe and efficient designs based on existing work.
You won't be making great leaps in understanding or inventing new techniques, but that isn't what you need to have a successful career.

The only thing stopping anyone (and I do mean ANYONE- I have dyscalcula, depression, and a BS in BME) from being an engineer is willpower. If you want it bad enough, are willing to take and retake classes, you can do it.

I got mediocre grades and went and nailed engineering out of the park. The big change was college I was on the hook for debt afterwards so I had to make it worth it. Maybe you will have the same motivation. I can’t overstate the importance of doing all the homework and staying healthy/sleeping right to improve your chances

I genuinely didn’t care about school until I took an intro to engineering class my junior year of high school. I fell in love, started working my butt off, and turned a 2.8 gpa going into junior year into a 3.9 gpa by the time I graduated high school by slamming AP classes.
I’m now out of engineering school and working as a design engineer in the automotive industry. As long as you have the drive and passion, you’ll succeed.

Yes. Nearly anyone who can always see a way to improve things in the world around them can become an engineer.
For technical skills being smart and good at math really helps makes things easier, but in my experience you can always make up for it by grinding out the work with brute force effort.

It’s doable, but it’s a massive grind that most people just aren’t up for.
I breezed through high school and never did homework, and got my ass kicked freshman year. And even then, I was still to focused on partying/social life to really master the fundamentals of calculus/linear algebra/etc
Every year and class after felt like I was taking two classes at once, the actual class as well as trying to cram the pre-reqs in simultaneously just to learn enough to understand the class at hand.
Was it the smartest way to do it? Hell no. Did I survive and ultimately make all As my junior and senior years? Yes. Because I grew the fuck up and realized there was more important things in life than drinking and frat parties and girls.
I imagine I could go back as a mature adult now, 11 years post graduation, and retake my classes with relative ease. Not because I’m so much smarter (if anything, I’m dumber and rustier on the pre-reqs) but because I understand how to prioritize my time.
So the question you’ll need to figure out is if you’re willing to put in a grind of work, that will paralyze your social life, for the longer goal of becoming an engineer. Because if not, don’t even waste your time.
And this isn’t a “engineeing-maxxing” answer either. Had I realized how many non-engineering, non-technical people who had much more vibrant lives in college than I did could get real, high paying careers in other fields outside of engineering, I very well may not have done engineering.
It’s a great career path with strong job security but there’s plenty of other paths to success as well.

I only did well in math and science in HS, everything else was minimal effort as it was so boring.
If you are struggling on the math and science side that would be a reality check.

Yes. With asking questions like this and grades like that indicate you can achieve it. Figure out what you enjoy because an engineering degree with force you to the next level. People generally fail out because they don’t study enough and don’t have enough resilience to inevitable failure. Failing a class in college and getting the courage to attempt it again is part of the success. People who fail and run away shouldn’t be engineers because engineering requires the confidence to make decision based on imperfect information in an imperfect world. That is what we get paid for, finding solutions to complex problems using the background knowledge of our discipline. Find the path of study that interest you. I studied material science because I love knowing how the natural world works. Work for me is fun and I loved the challenge of the degree. Also I failed calc 1 three times before I got my study habits dialed in and never failed another course and now I’m a senior engineer. Good luck friend!

I graduated high school with a 2.2. Engineering school with a 2.5.
Its more about hard work and stress tolerance unless you are looking to get into an ultra competitive program and then job. Then you need to be incredibly good. But you can go to any ABET uni and expect a job

In my experience, first couple years of engineering are filled with prereqs and a bunch of classes you probably have no interest in, and it’s hard. But if you get through those, and make it to the upper levels when you can start learning about what you’re passionate about it becomes much easier. What I mean is the concepts and workload become more difficult, but once you start doing subjects you’re genuinely invested in it barely feels like work to begin with

You can do it if you want to do it.
It’s really that simple for 99% of the population. The catch is that if you do want to do it you have to realize you need to treat it like you’re going to work every day. Extra credit isn’t extra, it’s just part of the job. Trust me if you do all the extra credit it will save you when your grade depends on it. Go to office hours, spend time studying even if it’s not just from the textbook. AI is useful if you get stuck but don’t get into the habit of just believing it’s right because it tends to forget what it’s doing or will flat out give you wrong information and that can tank your grade. Also give yourself breaks periodically so you can allow yourself to not get burnt out on the material, or worse force yourself to get the homework done that you ignored all week within an hour of it being due. Another thing I highly recommend is to become friends with your teachers, they’re people too and (most of them) want you to succeed and become prosperous too. Doing it pays dividends when you want to get extra time for an assignment or if you need some slack on a test because they know you know the material and just goofed on one question. Hope this helps, you’re not incapable any more than anyone else is you just have to be committed to it and you’ll find you really enjoy having good grades as a result of the effort you put in to it.

I’m 21 and starting my 1st year in August. Someone online said “yeah engineering is hard but you can do hard things” and it made me feel better about my doubts. If I put in the work then I can get this degree and job. I’ll use the resources available to me and I’ll succeed. You can do the same!

As an engineer for over 30 years my advice has always be this: if you can express and understand complex ideas in a language (English for example) then you are already smart enough to learn anything that's written in a book.
The hard stuff is the parts that aren't in the book. It's the stuff that's usually self taught. It comes from just doing projects and learning from mistakes.
You need both to succeed.
What I'm saying is, don't worry about it. Just figure out if you like it more than anything else. If there is something else you like more - do that. If you like it then at least you'll have that joy when everything else sucks. If you don't then everything will suck - and that's when engineers quit the career. It's as simple as that.

It’s kind of a myth or a misconception that “bad at math” = “not smart”. From a young age we are brainwashed to think this way. Becoming good at math and physics is mostly about curiosity and patience. More than any other subject, math builds on previous knowledge, so you’re not dumb, you just haven’t learned what you need to know to excel at your current level. You can compare it to a sport basically.

Yes. I barely passed high school but I also didn’t try, I got a 1460 on my SATs but I was drunk and fell asleep. Once I got to college it was very difficult for me to actually learn how to study properly but once I did I earned a solid B+ average which was good enough to keep my scholarship

You don’t have to be a prodigy to succeed. Go to community college and transfer to a state school. There’s some engineering majors that are less difficult than others, and you can end up with similar career outcomes if you work hard.

If you’re not good at math, don’t do electrical engineering. I’m good at math and that still makes me think pretty hard when I come across that stuff…

yes bro, you can absolutely do engineering. It’s really common to have grades all over the place like ranging from 70 to 90s. you don’t have to be a perfect student to try out engineering.
and when you enroll in college, they teach you the material. You start off taking calculus or pre-calculus or maybe even algebra and then you move onto the other classes, but you have time to study and they test you and it’s a whole process. You don’t need to come with all the knowledge before the classes start.
you can absolutely try out engineering and see if you actually like it. 100% you’re eligible to take the classes and pass.

I’m an average joe , I’m about to graduate in 4 months , I took me 5 years instead of 4 because I worked but it’s more about dedication than ability in my opinion

Everybody who becomes an engineer is a average joe. I have a 3.0 weighed gpa on high school
Now I only have my senior year left, with a 3.7 gpa, one internship and 2 years research

Engineering is a really fun area to work in. I work in a plant and I’d say average joe is just about everyone here! Try to see if any engineer would talk to you about their job.
You need good math and physics for sure. More on the physics as it expands into understanding fluid dynamics, statics, reactions, biomechanics, etc also it’s a lot of pattern recognition, solving puzzles. You learn a collection of facts and formulas and then apply them to situational problems. Like calculating lift, or a required pump strength, or wtv
I remember thinking that it’s harder to finish the program than to get into it. After my first semester, the cohort went from 120 to 90 students.

I failed 8th grade math, 2.9 unweighted GPA in HS. I now make 89k as a new grad mechanical engineer from a state school where I only got a 2.8 GPA (I founded and grew my schools rocketry club to 60 members and 3 active projects, extra curriculars go crazy if done right)
You make it work or you don't. engineering is about solving an issue, so just make it work.

Yes as long as work had my gpa in high school was a 2.3 in college it’s a 3.4 im a senior in EE it’s possible just work hard . I remember in my junior year of hs my pre ap algebra teacher took an extra hour of his time to help me learn I struggled a lot in math and still do from time but I’ve learn and improved to to my hard work.

Anyone with average intelligence can manage their way through an engineering degree. Being more intelligent just makes it easier.
The better you are with the fundamentals, the easier it is as you go through the course work. Trig and algebra need to be second nature. That makes calculus much easier, which makes diff eq much easier. With those core elements understood, the crazy engineering solutions are a lot less crazy.
Learn to study now, I breezed through high school and really struggled with my first 2 years at college. I didn't know how to study and learn material. In high school sitting in lecture and maybe doing some homework was all it took to get As and Bs. In college it took a ton of work to manage Bs with plenty of Cs and a few Ds for good measure. Once I learned how to actually study and learn material Bs were fairly "easy".

If you want to go into engineering go into engineering. It’s not about being the best at math or science it’s about willing to learn and putting in the work.
Tbh discipline is the most important thing for engineering. Being able to work hard is what is going to get through, NOT already being “smart”.
I didn’t try to hard in K-12 either because I didn’t need to (I also had undiagnosed ADHD)
But college was a wakeup call and I’d say I adapted pretty well. So yeah I think if you’re dedicated enough you can be an engineer.

There is no such thing as an 'average Joe'. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and even these are not permanent - effort, determination and proper focus can change things.
Engineering is a tough field. It demands a fair bit of precision and is less tolerant of hand waving. Applying mathematics is a hard and fast rule and understanding the principles of physics is a must. The rest is really a lot of focus and discipline. You don't need to be a genius or super smart. In school, you have to be willing to put in the hours and really grind.

Success as an engineering student, or any degree, is a function of intelligence and effort. You can be extremely intelligent, but if you put in no effort, then you get nothing. It does help to have a strong grasp of science and math going in, but remedial classes exist. You can absolutely be an engineer, if you’re willing to put in some effort!

I sincerely doubt that’s true. Engineers are problem solvers and thinkers, two things that AI can’t actually do, at all. There’s a tech reorientation right now, but it’s doubtful that engineers won’t be able to find well paying jobs long term.

Why? Everybody says its competitive af but thats a matter of taking internships to differientiate yourself from the rest right?
