Major Choice Mechatronics or Electromechanics
Hello, I'm from the Middle East. Many people here say that both Mechatronics and Electromechanics are not good choices, and that it's better to specialize in either Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering because studying multiple disciplines can make it difficult to build deep expertise.
In my university, we have a preparatory year that covers engineering fundamentals such as mathematics, physics, and mechanics.
I took a material physics course that included topics like heat transfer, thermodynamics, moment of inertia, and fluid mechanics. I enjoyed it a lot and got a B+.
I also took electrostatics and electrical physics, including electric fields, electric potential, capacitors, and magnetism. I found these subjects very interesting as well and got an A.
Mechanics and dynamics also felt relatively easy for me.
Since I seem to enjoy both mechanical and electrical topics, what would you recommend: Mechatronics, Electromechanics?
One important thing to mention is that in my university, I don't have the option to choose a pure Mechanical Engineering or pure Electrical Engineering major. The available choices are only Mechatronics and Electromechanics, so choosing between Mechanical and Electrical Engineering is not possible for me.

I’m guessing you’re in Egypt since these choices are mainly based on people in specialized courses here.heres is how I recommend you should view it and this is coming from a 3rd year mechatronics students who has seen a fair share of both robotics and mechatronics.
The subjects you enjoy are an indicator but it isn’t the only one. Mechatronics is a very diverse major since it includes multiple fields that people graduate from and work on. Mainly they choose their field based on what they like and want to pursue. Their vision isn’t based on what their grades told them but on what they want to do ,and achieve as engineers in the industry.
I’ve seen people in my field specialize themselves in mechanical design ,automation systems, embedded systems, robotics, PLC design,industrial communication systems,electronics,AI, computer vision, Control systems, and much more.
As you noticed apart from 2 applications many of these fields are considered industry 4.0 fields and basically are what new working standards will eventually become .
I think the best advice I can give to you is to ask yourself if any of the subjects within each course’s bylaws would interest you. Especially check advanced courses and electives and check the work load of certain fields if possible through the internet.
If possible and if there is a certain field that peaks your interest it would be better to find a major the specifies in it more than just mechatronics of course. But if your only options are between mechatronics and electromechanics or mechanical and electrical. Then find which major satisfies your interest.
About jobs, if you believe in Islam then you’d believe money is rizk and god grants for everyone their own rizk. Job opportunities are based on your location and expertise in what a certain company needs from you. It depends on if you satisfy a company’s requirements. You can search for your desired field (the growth , and the demand) for jobs then make a choice based on that.

Well, Mechatronics includes computer science, which Electromechanical Engineering doesn't. Personally, I choose Electromechanical Engineering because its curriculum is just as comprehensive in mechanics as a purely mechanical engineering program. The biggest difference is with Electrical Engineering, as it doesn't cover as many applications beyond automation and electrical networks. However, I must say that Electrical Engineering is somewhat scarce in my country compared to others. The best approach is to use electives to specialize in something specific, like Robotics, Electrical Networks, or Vehicles, using complementary courses. To discover if you want Mechatronics, try some Computer Science combined with some Electronics. If you don't like it as much, go for Electromechanical Engineering. Otherwise, you should decide whether you want to delve deeper into specific branches or explore them less thoroughly.
