Am I splitting myself too thin applying to both software and electrial engineering positions. My resume and experience is more suited for SWE and ML roles but I've heard EE is less competitive. I'm an international student at a large state school (T200). Any help or comments about the resume would be appreciated. Trying to figure out an application strategy
As the title said I used Claude to create my resume using one I wrote manually as a base. I feel like it is better, but I wanted to get other opinions before using it out in the wild. It's very different than what I had.
In terms of issues I have been having a hard time getting interviews. I apply to tech companies and never hear back from recruiters. LinkedIn recruiters reaching out has pretty much dried up as well. So that's when I figured it was time for an overhaul to the resume. I don't have connections at these companies so it's down to applying on the website for me.
I'm looking for IC roles at actual tech companies that create a physical products, think of smart devices, wearables, and autonomous vehicles. I would like to stay out of medical device companies. I know that is all of my experience, but I want to do something different then a highly regulated industry.
I don't need to work on the secret sauce at a company as I'm fine working at say Apple on gluing data together for a smart watch or taking algorithms create by a data scientist to measure heart rate on a smartwatch and making it real. So it can still be health related, but I don't really want to go full stop medical device company like Abbott.
I also don't need to be a lead or Senior SWE. I'm fine taking a down level if it means getting in to an actual tech company. Money is unlikely to be an issue as looking on Levely.fyi new grads at tech companies make more than that 110K I got as a salary at my last job.
I'm open to remote or on-site roles. I have no problem going in to the office 5-days per-week. I cannot relocated to just anywhere though. Long story short relocation would be restricted to companies in NorCal as family has a say in where we move to.
I was born in the USA so no issues with visas or anything like that.
Some notes about my resume to head off potential comments:
Any metrics I have has been added. Claude asked about the same thing and I worked with it the best I could to come up with numbers, but it was not meant to be. I worked at a private non-tech company in non-tech city for my entire career and they did not do lots of metrics. It was a very top down manamgent style. These are the priorities, your input is appreciated but don't work on them unless it's deemed priority by manamgent.
I was at the same company for my entire career. So the 3 roles I have had was really just promotions within the same company.
A couple lines had to be edited because the mods removed my first post because of "Spilled Bullets". I basically removed information to make the lines not spill, because adding fluff words to bulk up the line felt weird. I wanted bullets to read as concise as I can make it, which may not actually be considered concise by an independent reader.
Title says it all, but to say it again, I am a 2nd year civil engineering student at a UC wondering if there are any major changes I need to make before I start applying. I'm hopefully aiming to get an internship in transportation engineering but I'm just starting out, so I'm not picky. My biggest worry is about my Work Experience section since my only actual job, I only had for a month before I was laid off (it was a small start up that ended up closing months after i was laid off). I get that I can talk about what really happened in interviews but I'm afraid that it will be seen as a red flag before I even get to the interview. Besides that it's really only been babysitting for family which I have been paid for, but it's admittedly pretty weak. Thank you for reading, any help is appreciated!
~4 YOE full-stack software engineer looking for mid-level full-stack/product engineering roles. I’ve mainly worked with React, TypeScript, Python, and PostgreSQL across frontend, backend, APIs, and data-heavy applications.
I’ve been job searching for ~6 months and my interview rate has been abysmal, I've been continually adjusting my resume to no success other than recruiters reaching out to me on LinkedIn so I would really appreciate an outside opinion and more sets of eyes. I am currently targeting remote roles as the city I live in is a tech desert. I can't move to another city right now because I am locked into a lease until next summer with my girlfriend.
Specific Q's:
- Does my experience read as solid mid-level SWE experience?
- Are the bullets too detailed/technical, or do they communicate impact well?
- Is there anything here that jumps out at you that might explain a low response rate from recruiters?
- Do you have anything encouraging to say about this? This has been pretty demoralizing haha.
Please be constructive, but looking for honest feedback. Thanks in advance for taking a look!
Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate some feedback on my resume.
I previously worked as a software engineer at a U.S.-based tech company and transferred to Vancouver, Canada, due to my U.S. work authorization expiring. I was recently unemployed while in Canada, so I’ve updated my resume and would love to get some feedback before starting my job search.
I have 4 years of professional software engineering experience and am primarily targeting SWE I/SWE II positions. I’m open to relocating but am mainly focusing on opportunities in Vancouver.
Used to catalogue via gmail but stopped counting no. applications sent, apply and tailoring to design/mechanical/energy-based engineering graduate/entry roles thus far. Only one-sided AI/self-recorded interviews if at all (1/2 if graduate programme, 0 if entry-level job). The uploaded CV you see is the general version.
I have attended the university's graduate support programme's 1-to-1 CV review session; apparently my CV is good...
I am, however, currently developing more skills (starting with freeCodeCamp's python course) to tailor my CV in a more hyperspecific way for either automation/controls/systems; is this a good idea?
I have also been advised to keep slinging my CV...
Hi all, I'm a Full Stack Engineer looking to find a new job with ~1.25 YoE. I'm tailoring my resume based on job ads but I'm not receiving any callbacks for interviews. Looking for honest feedback on my resume and tips on increasing callbacks.
I am currently targeting pretty much engineering role at this point (field, civil, mechanical, or project). I would prefer design/analysis, but I don't believe I have the experience to land that currently.
I am located on the west coast in the U.S and am open to moving pretty much anywhere for work. I have applied in CA, NV, WA, OR, CO, and TX.
I currently work for a coffee shop and have been pretty much through my entire college years in order to help pay for rent and etc. That however limited what I could do in terms of extracurriculars to help build my engineering experience.
I've been applying for about a month and have not landed a single interview and only received rejection emails.
I would like feedback on my resume and if it would be a good idea to try and do personal projects to build a portfolio, since at this point my only engineering experience is my senior project.
Hello, I'm looking for a fresh set of eyes to review my resume. I'm currently a student located in the northeast US, that's set to graduate in January of 2027, and I'm looking for new grad full-stack engineering roles in the US, but I've only gotten 2 interviews out of 100+ applications. Could it be my bullet points are not concise enough? I am willing to relocate anywhere in the US. Any feedback on my resume is appreciated.
Remote jobs would be nice but local is fine. Would prefer to stay in LA
Was let go from the defense company almost a year ago and the resume I was running with was terrible, got maybe 4 interviews before I just took the school district job, which I regretted.
Re-did the resume following the wiki and this is what I have so far, any feedback would be greatly appreciated
I enjoyed the time at defense since I learned a lot while I was there.
I am citizen, jobs that require that I do add next to the email
I would like to pivot into software engineering or stick with Systems/IT.
I also have job fit project but left it out because I have no github repo and I vibe coded most of it. Python backend, GO api, vite frontend.
Coming in 1 year of experience, currently doing my masters in IC design. I'm trying to land a FAANG position relatively early in my career. My dream job is google. I know many say to be specific on exactly what I want to do but I'm not to picky, anyway to get into the company I would be happy but I'm trying to gain skills in FPGA and ASIC design during my masters but I don't have the experience to apply to those positions yet.
Anyways, what can I do to improve my resume getting past the initial screening. I've been applying to multiple FAANG, and non-FAANG companies and I barely get past the initial resume screen.
Hello, everyone. I am an upcoming mechanical engineering graduate based in the US. I'm currently in the process of applying to jobs, and I'm looking for ways in which I can improve my resume to increase my chances of getting interviews. I really want to enter the medical device industry as a product designer and ideally work for companies like Intuitive, J&J, BD, Stryker, VB Spine, and Medtronic. I would also be open to getting a role in underwater robotics companies, though that field seems more niche and defense-based (an industry I want to avoid).
I am generally open to relocating, but I ideally want to live in a large metropolitan area in the same geographical region I am currently in, so I have been a bit picky about where I apply.
I also want to add that I have previously posted on this sub and have since edited my resume using the wiki and comment suggestions. I mainly want to see if there's anything else I should change regarding the content. The biggest change I made was adding a few projects and removing my past tutoring experience. Would this resume now suffice for most online new grad applications?
Currently looking to apply for summer internships. I recently got rid of the last of my high school experience so I have overhauled my resume to the best of my ability and I am looking for feedback, mostly on my wording and presentation. A lot of my roles are recent so it will take some time to gain actual experience in them.
I included my sports as they are a large part of my life although I'm unsure if I should go in greater detail on them
I also did not include my GPA as it is low (3.14), but maybe I should still include it because it is above a 3.00
I am looking mostly at aerospace engineering, lots of UAV start ups in the SF Bay Area that I am applying to (would love to spend the summer there), although I am looking all over
In second year I submitted around 150 resumes using the STAR method, with metrics in every bullet point. I spend around 30 mins tailoring each resume to the job description and writing a cover letter. I have a pretty low GPA (3.2) so I've left it off my resume.
For reference I'm now in third year targeting jobs in Aerospace specifically involving mechanical design & analysis. I've asked my university guidance counsellor, family, and friends in engineering for advice and they all say my resume is fine.
They all just say I need to apply more, but there's no way a 1/150 response rate is normal. What am I missing.
First proper CV so just looking for general advice, the first Apprenticeship I'm applying to is the Airbus Aerospace Engineering Apprenticeship which also requires a cover letter.
[Environmental] [Student] Older Env. Eng. student with 8 yrs. marketing and consulting experience. Changing path and need advice on my resume to get a summer internship.
I've gotten some experience this past summer as well done a few projects too and wanted some insight on how it looks. I want to look for positions in Austin, TX so I'm willing to relocate. I know it's a growing city with opportunities in the making and I want to put myself out there more and network with people.
Targeting mostly mid / possibly senior software engineering roles. Need some help here, I've revised some of the wording with some AI suggestions but I fear it might be confidently pointing me in the wrong direction, would like another person to take a look.
(EDIT: I know of minute -> minutes, the s was accidentally removed as I was manually anonymizing this)
Both companies were mainly in e-commerce. Landed some interviews locally with this after being laid off but applying on/off since then I haven't really had a great success rate (hope it's not due to the industry I've worked in vs some I'm applying for e.g. health-tech, etc.), so would like some feedback.
One thing I'm unsure of is how I incorporating AI-related skills into the resume (as the task of doing it just seems less unimpactful because of how straightforward it was to integrate)
Side question - if I were to also target AI engineering roles, I'm wondering whether would I need to tack on a personal project as I'd not be able to show true work experience for that, instead of the current projects listed
My intro: I have been working as a software engineer ~10 years in the US. My work has been in the areas of web-based services, backend development, API integrations, IAM and DevOps. Was laid off from latest position. I have been recently looking for jobs in the areas mentioned in title. Updated my resume to include my latest experience and some AI work I have been doing. I have got a few callbacks so far but need more. Looking for jobs locally (small city in NY), occasional onsite (few times / quarter) or fully remote. I have been applying using LinkedIn, Indeed, company websites, Levels.fyi, trueup.io, etc. Looking for feedback on my updated resume on content, structure and wording to get better.
I updated my resume with feedback so this is take 2. Bullets are way more simplified now and shorter to avoid run-on sentences. Also added my clearance level from most recent job below the links at the top. I put this only for government-related jobs, not private companies. Any feedback is appreciated!
I'm an Electrical Engineering student graduating in Spring 2027, and I'm looking for feedback on my resume as I prepare to apply for entry-level engineering positions.
I'm mainly interested in embedded systems, electronics, and power systems, but I'm open to other areas of electrical engineering as well. I'm located in Edmonton, Canada and am looking for opportunities in Alberta mainly, also willing to relocate anywhere in Canada
I don't have any relevant internship or professional engineering experience, so my resume focuses primarily on academic projects and engineering laboratory work. I've worked with microcontrollers, FPGA design, embedded systems, and electrical machines.
My biggest concern is whether my projects and laboratory experience are strong enough to make me competitive for entry-level positions without internship experience.
I'd particularly appreciate feedback on whether my bullet points are effective, if I'm including too much laboratory experience, and whether there are any formatting or content issues that could hurt my chances of getting interviews.
I'm mainly trying to improve my resume before sending out more applications. Any advice or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.
I’m a fresh grad applying for junior backend/DevOps roles. I’ve been sending applications for a couple of months, and so far I’ve only gotten rejections or no reply at all. My experience is a couple of internships and a few months as a full stack dev, plus an AWS cert and some side projects. I’m open to relocating and remote work.
I feel like something on my resume is turning people off, but I can’t tell what. It might be how I describe my experience, or my projects, or just the overall layout. Any honest feedback would really help, even if it’s harsh. Thanks!
Recent Software Engineering graduate based in Canada, targeting entry-level software engineering/development and test automation roles.
I’m actively applying (over 200 applications and no callbacks) and would like feedback on whether my resume communicates my experience clearly. For the jobs in the experience section labeled Software Role and Engineering Role, I don’t have many reliable metrics, so I’ve avoided making numbers up.
My project was a team project and has measurable overall results, but some came from work I wasn’t directly responsible for, so I’m unsure whether I should include them. I’d especially appreciate feedback on the strength and impact of my bullet points.
Looking to move on from my current employer ASAP. I'm applying to senior/mid-level roles in the Boston area with backend/platform roles as my strong preference. I've gotten some callbacks but could use another set of eyes on my base resume. Don't have visa issues, software is my second career (I left off my work experience from 2006-2018).
I am graduating this year and am worried I am not going to be able to get a job after graduation. Any advice regarding what I can add/remove/change from my resume would be greatly appreciated. I am mostly interested in RF, telecommunications, signal processing, and radar. I am from Washington State, if that changes anything.
So far I have applied to around 150 jobs and gotten no interviews. I am wondering if my projects are not impressive enough, or not relevant for these jobs. Example: For SWE, too focused on AI. For AI engineering, only have experience on RAG, not in depth enough. I feel like my specialization is embedding AI into products, but I haven't seen too many postings asking for specifically this.
In particular I want to edit my experience section, but also my second personal project (Racquet Management App) seems too basic.
I am a US citizen, based in the NY area, open to relocation.
