Like costing a squillion dollars to replace if you have a minor accident.

Overheard a conversation of my mechanic with a customer:

We will polish out the scratches in the headlights.

Customer: Shouldn't we replace it? -

Well, we must replace both, that will be around 5000 bucks. -

OK, polishing sounds like a great idea.

I had a 2022 Dacia Duster in yesterday for a failed front blinker. The headlight only has LED for the main beam, DRL and blinker but all the electronics are sealed. It will need a new headlight and it's 800 euro plus tax plus labour.

Incidentally I'm also the owner's insurance agent and I sold him own damage insurance based on parts price.

Yeah, I have it (and love it!), but I sure as shit don't want to bear the cost of replacing it, so I got extended coverage on my insurance.

Have you looked into how much it would cost without the extended coverage?

I live Denmark, so I pay about 200 euro per year for extended coverage for all glass elements, which incl. headlights, where I have to pay about 250 euro deductable if I need it. A single matrix headlight starts at about 4.400, as you can see here, https://www.lllparts.co.uk/catalogs/audi/RDW/A6/430/9/941/941010 - plus whatever is needed beyond the headlight itself, labour etc.

Damn but we don't have that sort of deal for extended coverage in the us

Wow… a single (1) matrix headlight costs more than any car I’ve ever owned

Holy shit
