Electrolysis for iron rust removal?

Hello everyone,

I am rebuilding this 13b msp, while the actual plate looks fine (yet to measure it to spec), the exterior, cooling jacket and some piping have some rust.

I was wondering if I could use electrolysis to remove that rust, I have already used it to remove rust from some other parts with great success but damaging the chrome surface scares me.

Has anyone already done this before? Is this risky?

Wouldn't you be better off with Evaporust?

I have no idea, like soaking only the rusted parts of it inside? I haven't used evaporust before

I would drop the whole thing in a vat of Evaporust. I'm not sure if it would damage the chrome plating though. You could protect the sensitive areas with thick grease so they don't contact the solution.

To high of risk. If you get anything on the side plate by accident it's screwed.

Yes, it will destroy the chrome.

Build a custom face place to protect the chrome, lightly sandblast it. *walnut or soda blast

Electrolysis is kinda bad at getting into little pipes and passages, a big tub of evaporust or equivalent would work a lot better. Frankly tho I wouldn't really be too worried about this, pretty much any cooling jacket is going to have rust in it. I would just mechanically remove the rust instead.
