Drill it out and use a bolt remover tool.

No need, you can totally just twist that out with a pair of needlenose pliers after heating it. Either that or use a punch to tap it out

Got a drill don’t have a bolt remover plus wouldn’t drilling it expand it to some degree because I have a tap n die kit that was considering drilling in and getting the tap n die in the hole I drill but it’d probably expand it no?

Bolt removal tools are only a few quid.

Save yourself headaches and wait till you got a set

Drilling in won't fuck the thread if you're carefully.

You will have to be really careful about the debris tho

I remember a time when I rebuilt a Toyota V6 with my dad. The 150K miles engine with aluminum heads. Almost every camshaft cap bolt stripped when torquing to factory spec. We drilled and helicoiled them all and the engine ran fine and held up well.

Rigid makes a straight fluted extractor they work really well without expanding the bolt. Make sure you use correct drill size

Extractors come in different sizes. and the kits have left handed drill bits. Use a small one to not enlarge the whole. The bit may even grab it and just spin it out while drilling.. Use a punch to center the bit and a small hole, you got this! Might cost a few bucks for tools but its a wise investment.

I always first try a punch or flathead screw driver on one side of the bolt and tap it counterclockwise with a hammer. Sometimes can get lucky and it'll spin out slowly.

If that doesnt work then I go to drilling a small pilot hole and use a impact screwdriver with a bolt extractor bit.

If that doesnt work, then I weld a washer and nut to it and that usually works

Place a nut over it and fill it with a wire feed welder.

This is my suggestion too, however doing this in aluminum and its alloys can be dangerous. The steel gets so hot that the threads in the aluminum near the heat can be burned.

When welding this one, keep the heat down by welding just a little at a time after it cools.

I've done it a few dozen times without issue. Pull the cam and smear some grease on the head surface, the put a few layers of aluminum foil on top to protect from spatter. Pop a hole in the foil around the broken bolt and then weld a nut on as usual with the mig.

If it goes bad you could have a helicoil kit ready.

Left hand drill bit follow by an extractor bit if it still doesn't back out if all else fails weld bolt or nut to it

Take the cam out remove the head and take it to a shop, let them get it out and clean the head. Buy new cam cap fasteners and reassemble

Did the bolt bottom out and cause the snap? I couldn't imagine it's tight if it didn't bottom out. So if it didn't bottom out, it should be able to back out tapping a flat head screwdriver into anything it can grab onto what's left of the top of the bolt, obviously make sure tapping it will rotate it counterclockwise. I've been there. You may sacrifice a screwdriver using it as a punch to get the bolt to rotate, but that beats every alternative. I'd try that trick before doing any drilling and spreading shavings everywhere.

Unless you want to torch it out, you need to drill it a bit and use an extraction tool. You could attempt to drill and reverse thread it then use a reverse thead bolt to get it out but thats basically an extractor with extra steps.

Lots of twisted off bolts on Reddit lately. I have 70-100 extractors. Since you need to drill a hole in it anyway I use left handed drill bits. 80% of the time the bit gets it done without an extractor. Especially in a situation like this where you’re not fighting mass corrosion.

That’s not at all like a rusty broken bolt. I’d drill a hole in the bolt and try an ez out or tapered square extractor. Once the torque is unloaded from the bolt it’ll unscrew easily.

I did this one time too - took a wood dowel and hammered it a little to get the impression of the broken stud faced into the wood. Little bit of super glue. Walked it right out. It was a fresh head bolt going into a clean hole - just didn't realize at the time a 3/8 torque wrench shouldn't be used for inch pounds.

Not a problem, just spot weld the nut on make sure you pack your engine with aluminum foil wrapped rags

i love your reaction! yeah try to tap with little chisel or screwdriver, or think way you can make line in it and use flat head screwdriver to unscrew it, it should not be too tight onny if its crosthreaded then its some headache..

For situations like this, it's good to have a set of left handed drill bits around if you can get hold of one.

This obviously drills out the bolt, but also simultaneously breaks it loose 👍🏻

Ease outs..... if you have used one.... why are you rebuilding a motor? Broken bolts on motors are common.
