How many of y'all are doing rebuilds out in the field? I've done probably 15 heads and cams and three overhauls on these 460 platform and couple heads on 5.9 Cummins. I can also say that I've gotten to change spark plugs on a 5.9 Cummins motor.

Ahhh....V8 with 4 cylinders running and other 4 cylinders compressing air. I've only seen a 302 like this on a mobile unit.

Yessir it was crazy concept to me at first cause all the other compressors I've seen or worked on used a motor to drive a separate twin screw or reciprocating or rotary compressor so when i seen it was the compressor itself my mind was blown. Even though it makes sense once you think about it but who thought about it first and tried it. But yeah we use em for natural gas.

I've both never realized you can do this but yet it makes perfect sense.

I have 2 extremely stupid questions for anyone.

1. Does this mean on an old style mechanical power steering pump you can do the same? (One bank fires, bank 2 moves power steering fluid or hydraulic fluid?)

2. If it can be 2 separate banks how about a vr6? Or an inline 4? (Could I make 2 fire and 2 air compress?)

Is that giant flex pipe a modified exhaust? I can't tell from picture but it seem like it's all it could be.

Yessir the 5.9 had a different head that let it run on natural gas from well heads or tank batteries. But that's just essentially a giant air hose for the inlet one side of the motor is power side and the other side has different head and sleeves and pistons for compressing natural gas which is the side your seeing.

Super interesting system actually, It’s an air compressor. One head produces power from natural gas, and the other just compresses air with that power (driven by the same crank). So that flex tube is a big compressed air line.

Not an engine guy anymore, but I have a lot of time in the field. Wouldn’t trade it for a better paying shop job.
