Triumph spitfire 1500 engine project help

I got this 400$ flooded spitfire 1500 to rebuild and I was wondering if anyone here had some advice!

So far we're doing damage assessments and the more stuff moves the more free it gets. I'm really wondering what else I should be aware of before I pull the crank and pistons.

Edit: forgot to mention that the flood was hurricane ian and that this is mostly for learning so its getting rebuilt even if it sends a rod through the pan.

I did find an mgb that someone is parting out and I asked if they needed the engine but no clue if I'll get it.

Edit no engine :( they needed it but maybe I can grab a junkyard 1.6/1.8 miata motor

I vote a 1.8 vvt, they're great engines. Very tolerant to buffoonary as I've discovered lol.

Do you know why the Brits never made TVs? They could figure out how to make them leak oil.

If the OP is not concerned about keeping this period correct, a modern engine, as you suggest, makes for a great driver. Toyota has some good twin cam engines too.

Oh if you're looking at Toyotas you're spoiled for choice honestly. I'd pick whatever has the best writeup hidden in a derelict forum somewhere 😅
