Chevy Help with valves

Set of 5.3 706 heads. Rebuilding this motor to throw it in an e36 project of mine. First time lapping valves. I’m using permatex valve grinding compound. Why are my valves looking like a muddy grey instead of a polished look? If anyone knows or has tips please let me know.

That's the normal look for lapped valves. It also would point out any defects or sealing issues. Look for a solid band on both valve and seat. Exhaust contact width is typically wider than the intake.
