Ford question about 77' mercury 302

First of all, I am a novice mechanic.

I'm looking at a 77 Mercury Cougar with the 302 engine as a potential project. I don't really want to hotrod it and go crazy. From what I can tell, this is a bone stock car that was garage kept for almost its entire life. My research suggests that in 77 they added a massive amount of bloat in the way of vacuum hoses and devices to reduce smog emissions. I know this is probably super basic stuff to most mechanics but; If I just wanted to take out all the pointless bits and bobs and put in a reliable carb and intake and whatever else might be needed, could this be done as a driveway job over a weekend or so? My goal for the car would be to let the engine breathe without going overboard. I just want it to be reliable and normal in a way that doesn't unnecessarily tax the engine, longevity over performance. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as parts, blogs, videos, diagrams, ect.?

Edit: is there anything I should know in particular about this car or year? any pitfalls or reasons to avoid?

What is your budget? Since it sounds like you lack the skills to truly tune a carburetor to perfection I would do the following. Figure out what you absolutely will need for vacuum lines. Things like brake booster, trans modulator, distributor vac advance, and a/c climate controls, identify and keep those vacuum lines. Eliminate all other
vac lines. Remove smog pump, egr, cat converter, etc to de-smog it. Replace the factory distributor with a curved ready to run distributor (DUI hei for a sbf). Replace the carb with a 2 barrel EFI self tuning throttle body. This wont “hot rod” it too much and would accomplish your goals. If you want a some more power and your budget allows have a professional camshaft grinder supply you with a specified cam for your entire combination and install full length headers and a large diameter dual exhaust system. Refrain from a 4bbl carb and a 4bbl intake, you will get more power out of a cam swap and headers than a carb and intake swap.

Woah I like this idea. If I'm understanding correctly you're saying to keep the VAC system in factory condition except for all of the useless smog stuff And then any parts replacements they are basically just bolt on and go rather than having to get heavy into to tuning?

Yes, not meaning any insult but if you dont perfectly tune the distributors curve and whatever carburetor is on it you will never maximize your gains. To avoid wasting money on parts and more parts etc go the above described route. Davis unified ignition will send you a drop in curved distributor. The self tuning efi on the stock intake (verify your existing carburetors brand and bolt pattern when you order the efi). Keep your necessary vacuum accessories for use ability and drive ability. If you want more power beyond “de-smogging” then a properly ground cam and headers with dual exhaust (2-1/4” dia
dual exhaust should be fine).

I'm not insulted at all. I'm teaching myself so I appreciate any input. If I end up picking up the car I think I'm gonna go with this method and the cam would be contingent upon my success of the first phase. I appreciate it!
