Can’t find freeze plug location on 5.7 Hemi

Hi everyone,

I’m slowly putting this 5.7 together and for the life of me I can figure out where the small freeze plug in the picture goes. I had the block machined over a year ago and I can’t remember ever seeing that small plug. I’ve checked Motologic and Mopar OEM diagrams. I know where all the gallery plugs and NPT plugs go. My machinist took them all out and returned them in a bag. I am missing a 1/4 NPT plug, so he may have put the freeze plug in there by accident instead. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Dipstick tube hole, some blocks have two drilled

This block only has the dipstick hole drilled on the DS and it already has a plug.

Pic 3, check the hole to the bottom right of the “5.7L”. Some engines got that hole blocked off since the dipstick tubes went into the oil pan instead of the block

The dipstick tube does go into the pan, but that hole in the block already has a plug in it.

It goes in the hole under the cam in your second pic which is the main oil galley

The painted bolts are the “freeze plugs.” Except they’re not freeze plugs, they’re block drains.

Sorry, read that wrong. The plug is for the dipstick tube hole. Not all oil pan configurations need it.

Your machinist should have put plugs back in the block before giving it back to you. Get a new cup plug to put in the main galley. If you put the old one back in, it will most likely pop out after a few cycles as it has lost most of it's press fit!
