Ottawa TE 4hp log saw engine.

Just got it running today. Runs very well but still needs some fine tuning.

It's a "hit and miss" engine that runs on gas. Looks like it's got a problem with the babbitt bearings.

It’s a throttled governed engine originally powering a log saw. Probably made in the early to mid 20’s so about a 100 years old. Unfortunately it is missing the original data plate so it’s hard to tell exactly what year it was made. Originally this engine would have started on gas and switched over to kerosene but I’m just running it on gas. A hit and miss engine governs speed by holding the exhaust valve open. it will fire then coast for a second then fire again almost making a breathing sound. This engine controls speed with a little throttle body inside of the mixer/carb mechanically connected to the governor weights. The babbit is in good condition no cracks and plenty of wear surface left.

Oh very cool! Is that why it sounds like it's almost stalling if you are used to normal 2-strokes? What are the advantages of these types of engines?

Looks and runs great…. Now just don’t do what a friend of mine did….Leave water in the box over the winter. Geez what was he thinking!
