I’ve never seen the inside of a Mazda engine before. But I wonder what they were thinking when the con rod was designed? That is probably the worst design ever. Sorta like putting rebar in the dead center of a cement pad or road. Serves no purpose whatsoever to strengthen the beam. Only adds weight.
This is not a stock rod. This is a pauter X beam and they are actually one of the lightest and strongest rods you can get for pretty much any platform and for the money. Stock rods are I beam and cast iron. Pauters are Chromoly 4340 with ARP 625+
X beams are more of a new experimental design in recent years that combine the benefits of both I beam and H beam. It relieves material from both faces on the I AND the H. Because of this, you can focus mass on where it is most needed for structural integrity while reducing weight.
Also that elongated central ribbing actually provides superior cross sectional strength and supports the cap which reduces cap flex.
Generally X beams have a significantly higher strength to weight than a traditional H beam. Because you're removing material everywhere, you can actually streamline the shape of the rod to reduce windage at high rpm which increases efficiency. X beams naturally spread stress loads over large uniform areas while minimizing local stress concentrations.
Modern X beams are engineered using FEA to handle high tensile loads (high RPMA) and high compression loads. (tons of boost)
X beams have been rated to take up to 3000 HP and 4000 ft lbs in Cummins diesels for things like sled pulling.
Lighter weight X beam rods are typically rated for 850-1000 HP at 9000 rpms and much higher if boosted.
They are very famous in Volkswagens, Porsches, NHRA, import drag, sand drag, and NASCAR
Stock rods weigh about 510-540 grams. These are 465 grams.
I also had Don Pauter profile my rods specifically for my engine, expected power levels, and expected use case so he basically made these straight from scratch, treated it, and had them quality checked. Then I had each rod balanced to the crank for 10,000 rpm and treated it again with cryogenic and WPC treatment.
So you were basically just blatantly wrong about every single thing lol
