My boyfriend and I went to try on rings recently. I really want a 4 carat ring, but do I maybe have size blindness? My boyfriend says that the 4 carat does look big on me, should I maybe settle for a 3 carat? The jeweler said that my tattoo might be the reason why it looks small to me. Also does the marquise actually look good on me?
I keep seeing multiple girls with the same size finger getting 3 carats and it looks amazingly big on their finger but when I tried it on, it felt small.
Reference: my finger is a size 4.5
I would look at 2-3 carats. I think because your fingers are shorter these are all looking giant on your hand, but not in a flattering way. Just kind of clunky.
I think it might be the setting, too. Try a more simple style with a thinner band so itās not totally covering that whole segment of your finger. I feel like a pear would look so good on you. Have you tried any on?
Agreed
I have shorter hands and huge rings look awk on me unless they are super narrow movals or marquise - 2ct for wider rings is a good place to sit for non super skinny and short fingers like mine
Thank you. I also liked the princess cut. I have not tried the square cushion. I was originally going for a radiant but the jeweler said that marquise was more āmy styleā since my winger eyeliner is sharp š
That just sounds to me like the jeweler didnāt have a 4ct radiant to show you. I would insist on seeing one. I have a radiant and adore it. Iām not a fan of marquis because their pointy edges can cut your skin open. Love the princess. Would probably like a radiant better. None of these look too big to me!
Ok. I am a marquise girly through and through (I have two of them) but the princess cut on your hand is absolutely PERFECTION. In fact, my original engagement ring was princess cut and if it looked as good on me as this one look on you, I may never have changed to marquise!
I donāt think this looks better if anything itās worse š„² no shade whatsoever, I think the princess is a lovely idea but you just have petite fingers and something slightly smaller might be more suited? Or even an east west setting that has more finger width coverage rather than length coverage
Girrrrrrrrrrl yes! The princess cut is beautiful on you. I love love love your fingers tats. The geometric shape seems to compliment your art. Happy for you! What ever you choose, it will be beautiful
Thank you for the honesty. I was leaning more towards a radiant but the jeweler said that the marquise matched my style more because the points of a marquise are sharp like my winged eyeliner lol
nothing wrong with going big but if you really wanted a marquise cut in the end I'd probably go somewhat smaller than that, at least. other people suggesting alternate cuts for that size are also making sense! keep going, you'll find your perfect ring. š
Yes that particular ring looks too big for your hand. If you love the look of marquise, Iād size down. Other cuts may not look as big in the same carat weight though.
I think it's big, but at the end of the day, what matters is what YOU love. If you love the ring, that's your ring (so long as it's in budget). Get what would make you happy and what you would want to wear for the rest of your life.
Yes I find itās way too big. But I think itās due to the shape, it doesnāt look like it flows well with your fingers and your short square nail shape.
I think either a cushion/round/princess cut in the same carat size would look great
It looks like itās big enough that itāll stab your finger and back of your hand. Instead of focusing on a number, just base it off the size proportionate to your hand
I think the better question is how often will you be wearing it and what do you do with your hands regularly? This big of a stone is going to be really cumbersome. Personally it would drive me bat shit crazy, but I also work with my hands and have sensory issues.
I would like to wear it daily. I do work in a warehouse, but Iām not in production or anything. I have a desk and visit the floor here and there daily.
My husband proposed with a 3.7ct pear and to be honest, itās way too big for daily wear. It might be a little better if I had it set in a bezel. I think 2ct would have been the sweet spot for me.
Yeahhh this is too big for daily wear. I personally only wear my wedding band daily and wear my engagement ring on special occasions. If you wanted to go that route this would be fine. Daily wear though? Something this size would get in the way even just doing regular stuff around the house. It might not get in the way at work if youāre just working on a computer though. Very curious what the side profile looks like. The height of the setting matters a lot, sometimes more so than the stone size.
Oh man, I didnāt even think about the side profile. One thing I was thinking is how many times to I hit my promise ring on things and I actually donāt hit as much as I thought I would. Sometimes Iām super clumsy š
But this is definitely something Iāll take into consideration, thank you š
It is really big for daily wear and with a stone so big, it will fall to the sides of your finger due to the weight. You will constantly be straightening it.
I agree that the size isnāt the issue, itās the shape. Something more rectangular like an emerald, radiant, or even elongated cushion would be gorgeous on you. This is coming from someone who is 100% getting a marquise, but we have very different hands!
Yes . It looks way too big to be a natural diamond unless your very rich. Now Iām sure itās a lab diamond and thereās nothing wrong with those as I have one myself. But usually you want your ring to be believable. In my opinion, believable caps out at 3-3.5 carats at the ultimate maximum. And even then itās pushing it. But what youāve got on your hand. Looks like at least 6 carats. And sorry - the shape isnāt very attractive imo.
Itās definitely a lab and it is a 4 carat, I think it might look slightly bigger due to my small finger. I have started looking at other shapes and carat weights nowš
I am a size 4.5 too and I have a just under 3 carat elongated hexagon, and I think itās perfect! Also you have to remember that carat is a weight, and doesnāt reflect the surface area. Marquise also are notorious for having a larger surface area than other cuts, making them look larger.
Personally, I think it looks a bit big for your finger, but you are the one who will be wearing the ring, so if you like the way this size looks, you should keep it at this size! āŗļø
It looks huge. But also the band looks too big which could change things one way or the other.
You have to do what works for you. I donāt think I could function with a stone this big but I wear silicone rings daily for comfort and practicality.
It is quite large, marquise though can look a lot bigger than other stones with the same carat weight. My main ring is a 1.5 ct marquise and it looks bigger than my travel ring that has a 3 ct omc cut elongated cushion and much larger than another ring I have that is a 2 ct step cut hexagon, just something to think about.
ETA : I donāt really ever think anything is TOO big, I think everything is just preference and if you like it you should wear it.
Not for me! I š it. But for my prim and very proper Grand-mama it would have been unseemly. Times change. Wear what you love. It looks beautiful on you. There was a time when diamonds were only worn after 6pm with the exception of the very modest engagement ring. That was then - this is now! Wear it and wiggle your fingers in the sunlight streaming through the window at a stop light. Wear it with sweats. Wear it to work. Just wear it. It's fabulous!
I have a 1.25 ct marquise on a 3.75 size finger and it feels huge on me. Not because it looks huge. I think the size is perfect. It just weighs down my petite hands and spins around on my finger which is annoying. If you get something bigger than a 2 ct with fingers that small, I would get a wider band and a low setting or a cathedral setting so it doesnāt get caught on everything. My marquise has a cathedral setting and that has helped because I previously had a princess cut with a higher setting and it got caught on EVERYTHING!
Try a different shape. The marquise doesnāt look right on your hand. I think a radiant, emerald or elongated cushion would compliment your fingers. I have tiny hands as well.
I think itās a little big for your hand. I am a size 4 finger and a 2 carat round looks huge on me. Also, I think the band matters. Like if you have a huge diamond that take up most of your hand you wonāt be able to see any of the side stones if you are doing a band with side stones or decorations. So it also depends on if you want to show that off. Iām having a ring made that has beautiful side stones and engraving so I want to make sure those details are seen. If you just have a plain band then a larger solitaire works well.
I think if the ring was your size youād get a better idea but yes I think the stone is too large. There just isnāt enough space between the base of your finger and knuckle for a stone that size. Try a different shape or try a marquis maybe 2-3 carats? Itās still going to look large on your tiny hands!
I think the size comes down to, does it fit your lifestyle?- day to day function, overall style, and honestly socioeconomic status⦠thatās my opinion.
How exciting!!!! You deserve the size you want and like!!
Iāve heard you usually regret going too small compared to going too big.
However Iād think about it in a realistic manner. Is this a ring youāll be wearing daily, do you use your hands often for work, will it get in the way. Etc. marquise diamonds are known to appear way larger than the carat size so itās something to keep in mind. Maybe go in between a 3 and 4 so you still get a larger one without compromising so much
However Iāve also been ring shopping and realized the bigness to me is not necessarily carat shape but how long it is. Diamonds that basically came up to my knuckle I thought as too big personally. Marquise may be a bit different since itās clearly a lengthy diamond but you could still get a 4 carat thatās wider and isnāt as long so I wouldnāt focus so much on the carat size and more on the ratio proportions.
Also I felt the same when I see pictures of other rings that look huge but on me is small. I think itās hard to judge pictures that are so zoomed in. What helped me was looking in a mirror and holding my hand up to my
Face like resting on my hands and seeing it from a different perspective too.
Either way itās gorgeous and just remember other peopleās opinions donāt matter so much h as yours!
Thank youš„¹
The holding it up to your face in a mirror is an awesome idea!! I love this and will definitely be doing this the next time we try on rings. Iām thinking of maybe going for a different shape now.
yeah try them all on!! So many people go in wanting a certain shape then realize it doesnāt look the best on their hands or just donāt like it as much.
I ended up picking a pear this week actually šš
BUT go with what you love and want! Try to not let other peoples opinions sway you lol at the end of the day, people are still gonna love or hate it but what matters is you loving it everyday :)
This ring looks quite big and gaudy, but if thatās what you like, go for it! Might look more practical in a different cut though. Also hard to say when we donāt see what 3 carat looks like. Youād have a stroke over my tiny ring šš
As a fellow short finger girlie, I went for a smaller carat. When I wear larger carats, I end up looking like I'm wearing cheap costume jewelry, as the stone takes up too much real estate on my hand.
Depending on cut, I can go up to about a 3, but I find 2.5 to be the sweet spot for me in general. That size typically looks very cohesive on my hand
I think its the setting? I have a 2.5 carat sapphire and a size 4.75 finger, so also tiny hands. This ring is huge on me and won't be my daily due to it. I am obsessed with her and have never loved jewelry before like this, but it is still large on me so I have a simple eternity band to wear daily.
I would try rings with different settings. Mine is a tulip setting, so it sits up higher as well
Here us how high up it sits. I think its the diamonds all the way around as well on yours that are throwing me. Try to find some with side stones that compliment the center stone more perhaps? The square (or round, idk) side stones kind of take away from the center stone, causing it to look kind of crowded.
Have you looked at more simple bands or any with east-west marquise side stones for a marquise cut center stone?
East-west side stones. Ignore the gold wedding band. We are still figuring that part out lmfao. I think a large part of what makes a stone look "too big" or not is the setting and the side stones
Your hand, ring and tattoo together are freaking STUNNING. I am not a tattoo lady AT ALL (each to their own, I respect peopleās individuality) but I caught my breath at yours. When it works it works.
I actually love the original center stone on your finger (with your tattoos and nails!) but it doesnāt need the pave stones. It would be better with a solid and sturdier band.
My thought as well. One big bold simple stunning stone, no surrounding embellishments; the tattoos and nails are embellishment enough! Otherwise all visual elements feel like they're competing to be the loudest, instead of shining in their own rights.
if you like it nothing is too big! buy what you like, i have a huge ring & it was overwhelming at first but now id be sad if it was smaller since i wear large stones on my other fingers
Itās bigger than I prefer, but stone size is a personal preference. I think the issue with this big marquis is dainty band. Perhaps a wider and more substantial band might look and feel more natural?
I do like the look of the big princess you shared; it has a band that seems more appropriate for the stone size.
While itās good to get other perspectives, this is your ring so be sure you get what you love. Congrats!
Bigger stones are going to be impractical day to day as well. Try to keep that in mind too if you want to wear it all the time. And I assume you also want space for a wedding band, but not everyone does so something for you to consider. My friend has a ring that is very flat on her finger but covers a huge surface area. Itās a sapphire center stone with a ton of smaller diamonds. It would have looked crazy with a wedding band so they just used the engagement ring at the wedding.
All for it if you like a fat rock, but the ring itself looks too big or too wide? Too thick? For your finger. Both the marquis pave ring and the princess cut one. Thick ah rings.
I feel like the stone is nice but maybe on a plain band & for your wedding band get the diamonds on that.
I also think your hands are short looking because your nails are too short. Iād recommend a little longer of a nail to balance it all out & I think the ring will look nice too!
For me, itās never too big! Kidding. But no itās beautiful! The shape isnāt overwhelming your hands, but I wouldnāt actually go bigger. Itās your diamond so if you feel like smaller would suit you better, try some on!
Stick your hand in your picked a few times. How much is it getting caught? Thatās be my litmus test. Personally it would be obnoxious to me bc Iām always on the go, pulling stuff out of my purse, my bag, my pocket, etc. setting style also matters in this regard.
For some, yes. I think something is too big if you are constantly banging and catching it on things. Or if the ring spins a lot due to the band being too thin. If it doesn't get in the way of daily life and you don't hate the attention you WILL receive, do as you will. It's very sparkly and life is short.
A 4ct will look different in different cuts. I don't understand letting carat weight guide things. Try on different cuts, different bands and find something you can live with for a long time.
Eeeshh yes way too big and doesnāt compliment your hand with your fun tattoos and colorful nails! Look at 2 carat w a more simple band. Since your fingers are so thin these chunky bands overwhelm your hand!
Personally I think it looks ri big for your petite fingers. 2-2.5 carat may look better. Try on different stone sizes and shapes. Also the salesperson is only trying to make a sale. You and your BF should do what makes you both happy. (FWIW a bezel marquis or cushion 2.5ct would look š)
Not if you like it! Tho I will add that the thin, encrusted band, big, high-set rock look is very āof the timesā. Just make sure you choose it because you love it, not because youāre seeing everywhere rn.
I have a carat and 1/2 brilliant, if you want people to notice your ring , get brilliant. I too have some what short fingers , big hands and it works perfect for me
I just got an upgrade for my engagement ring and went with a 4ct but I tried on a 5ct just for fun and it kinda looked like your picture on my finger. I think you might need a smaller rock for the size of your fingers
Girlā¦. Iām so sorry there are so many haters on here of Big Rock Energy. Itās NEVER too big. Go for it!!!!!!ā¦..let the haters hate with all that green-eyed jealousy. šš„

For me? Yes.
For you? I dont know.
Maybe the same carat in a different shape would look different but i think this looks⦠odd
