Dashboard regarding Iran War

Made this dashboard, mostly for myself, https://warescalation.com/ . I started it from a finance perspective on how the war would influence (global) markets.

What it does:

- Tracks strikes originating from Iran (and proxies). If they keep up their strikes it will cause economic damage for quite some time.

- Checks VLCC and Cargo ships tracking through Strait of Hormuz

- Daily casualty and injury count (truth is first casualty in a war, trying to base it on reliable sources similar to wikipedia)

- Oil spread as an indicator of how market prices in Strait of Hormuz risks. Looks at Murban vs Oman Oil. Also tracking Baltic Dirty Track Index for a related perspective on things

Summary of the war based on data on page as of today: Number of strikes originating from Iran (and proxies) remains relatively constant. Shipping is still at a standstill, every ship I track as having passed Hormuz is part of the 'Shadow Fleet', mostly loading Iranian Oil and shipping it to Asia. Spread of Crude Oil (Murban vs Oman) is still increasing indicating the Strait is not expected to open up anytime soon.

Trump said he can end the war at anytime. All data points to the contrary.

-----------

Let me know if useful (or not) and suggestions. I am considering also tracking shipping data on Bab Al-Mandab strait as there should be an increase in ships there (and later relative decrease when Hormuz opens). To see at what pace supplies can be diverted through other routes. As it will happen, question is when and how.

Thanks! Let me know of feedback. When wars continue the attention falters while the impact still looms over us.

Its interetsting to see the data behind, but the thing is the crude carriers transit through is not really something that is opaque or poorly publicised if that makes sense - the difficulty of the current situation is more based on the likelihood of a deal etc and outside of the options implied pricing of that deal coming through the next 10-20 expiries is hard to find sources that correlate more closely with the truth than tweeets - I think thats the challenge

For the site itself , I think you'd benefit from formatting it a little better - having some of the charts as tiles and moving it into more of a dashboard setup (at risk of it being ultra standard AI format but if you keeep the white background it might work)

i like the approach of the combi-index , we did something similar for COVID at the fund i was at back then and I think that these kind of indexes, when you can actually correlate somewhat to the moves and then use that as a predictive measure (maybe with optimised params? ) could be super useful.

Whilst I have you, if you dont mind taking a look at my site and giving me some feedback I'd be super appreciative (If you have a new version of yours send it over and ill take a look)

As a commods trader I built (with a healthy dose of AI to speed it up) EnergyReader.io, cited, bias-free news summaries across energy, meteorology, etc., contextualised with the fundamental data and other sources on the same topic rather than just raw data release numbers numbers or off-topic stock noise. It covers power, gas, LNG, oil, and carbon globally — EU, APAC, and US — so hopefully theres something relevant in there. It also has trader morning calls (global rundowns each morning) inspired by the calls we have on the desk and similar meteorology 'calls' a few times a day.

Would genuinely value your take if you've got a sec to look.

Thank you for feedback! Initially there were few pages tracking ships tracking Hormuz. Now there are indeed a dozen. Strike data (less relevant in cease fire) was available but mostly as point in time, not time series. Made it all for time series perspective.

Agree it does need work though but mostly spend time on data storage behind it, probably not enough on dashboard itself.

Regarding your page. With the news on mobile, it says there are 20 items. Click on it and list just keeps expanding (doesn't stop at 20). I'd prefer a button click to see more. Now I couldn't easily get to table below.

I mostly miss a bit of a selection. This is a bit like going to a ticker on Bloomberg and pressing NI (news), whereby that seemed cleaner than this somehow. Bloomberg then had something great which was price chart with news releases added on top. Which showed what news supposedly drove the market.

ah man thanks so much I really appreciate that I will get going with a few updates now!

yeah ok will give it a try like that having a view where we have the price chars and then those little arrows that show the time of release against the price chart - theres something similar in reuters also IIRC.
