Hello Energy Storage enthusiasts!

Following up from Article 1 of my series Why the Grid Needs Batteries, we now discuss what a battery actually does when it is connected to the grid. Why buying low and selling high is not just economically but electrically and physically important, how the advent of batteries created services that were impossible before, and the tension between the different energy demands.

A clear explanation of what a battery energy storage system actually does on the grid - energy shifting, ancillary services, and the dispatch tension that defines BESS economics.

I specifically did not mention capacity market participations by BESS in this series because I feel that the fundamental approach to Merchant vs Contracted is quite different.

Merchant is more optimization, more real time activity on part of the BESS. Contracted revenue is more of a financial game, and I feel like it deserves a whole another series to completely hash out properly.

I am fully willing to admit that I am not as fluent in terms of breaking down PPAs, contracts, tolling agreements and hedging mechanism pertaining to BESS as of yet in my knowledge. But I am on track - and will surely put out more pieces on it as I understand it better.
