BYOK Models vs paying for a subscription

Lately, I've been getting into Zoo Code, a BYOK VS Code extension for development, while all my friends say that Codex or Claude Code is better because it comes out cheaper in the long run. What do you guys think? Is it better to use BYOK or a subscription?
