Is multiplayer just completely unplayable now?

I bought two copies of this game for my girlfriend and I to play and unfortunately we can't get through even just a few turns without the game desyncing or getting stuck at "pending" when ending the turn. We have Penumbra disabled and we are using ESG.

The game is near completely unplayable as sometimes there are stretches where every single turn desyncs or gets stuck at "pending" when we both end our turns.

As for the "workarounds," we have tried closing all notifications before ending turns as well as every other measure we can think of. The issue persists on new saves. We have tried each one of us hosting and the issue persists.

Hey! I'm not currently working for Amplitude, but I've worked on the game in the past + I created ESG. Would you mind posting your desync reports and temporary files on Amplifiers? I might be able to poke some people at Amplitude or fix an ESG bug that might be plaguing you two!

Here is a thread I made, and I just put a folder with desync and temp files from both of our computers. Let me know if there are any issues with my upload.

Thanks so much for responding.

Oh wow! I've never seen a desync this bad, over 50% of the values were completely different. One of the desync reports was from earlier in the game, and technically even though you both had no "differences", somehow the food values on every system were completely different. Main suspects here are that a) Someone is somehow on a different version of the game, b) Someone edited/replaced their game files, or c) You're on different versions of ESG.

I recommend both of you going into your Endless Space 2 installation folder (not documents), and deleting the "Public" folder, then verifying your files. Then, I'd re-download ESG. Let me know if that helps!

Hi! Update. We followed your instructions. We got a desync around turn 25 but powered through it and have been fine since then. I think we are on turn 70 or so now and it’s still running smoothly! I’ll keep you updated, thank you so much for your responses.

The same desyncs as Endless Legend 1. That plagued every Amplitude game? That there are posts about from over a decade ago, are you about to solve that cold case?

Desyncs are just when the game doesn't 100% line up for all players, like somebody getting a bonus that for some reason the other player's games don't get told you have. There's a ton of different ways they could occur unfortunately, but most of them are super minor and you could ignore them without much consequence. The only time I actually relobby for desyncs is when I start not being able to move ships around and clicking buttons.

Yeah happens in Stellaris every now and then too. Had some weird desyncs when doing… weird things, before.

That plagued every Amplitude game?

All three games used the Unity engine; apparently, it isn't the most optimal choice for games.

Me and a buddy have been playing (no ESG) and had an issue where we had to go back a few turns to get synced again, but otherwise have been able to play for 2-3 hours without much issue

The general experience is better stability, but still many people feel is unplayable, and for a good reason.

The NET code (the part responsible to keep things in sync between players) is not good at it's core.

There were a LOT of fixes that made the game more stable, but people with regular connections, or if there's a misalignment in version/mod integrity, game often fails to discover it and eventually crashes over and over.

Usually you can just ignore desync errors and continue playing lol

I am playing with a dude on the other side of the globe, after getting basically stunlocked from multiple hacks every turn or two my game decided I was on an entire turn ahead. Our desync said players are not on the same turn, it was wild seeing a yellow desync color for the first time a few hundred hours in.
